ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَاطِرِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ جَاعِلِ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ رُسُلًا أُو۟لِىٓ أَجْنِحَةٍ مَّثْنَىٰ وَثُلَـٰثَ وَرُبَـٰعَ ۚ يَزِيدُ فِى ٱلْخَلْقِ مَا يَشَآءُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
"All praise is for Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who made angels ˹as His˺ messengers with wings—two, three, or four. He increases in creation whatever He wills. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything."

"And ˹it is˺ Allah ˹Who˺ created you from dust, then ˹developed you˺ from a sperm-drop, then made you into pairs. No female ever conceives or delivers without His knowledge. And no one’s life is made long or cut short but is ˹written˺ in a Record. That is certainly easy for Allah."

"The two bodies of water are not alike: one is fresh, palatable, and pleasant to drink and the other is salty and bitter. Yet from them both you eat tender seafood and extract ornaments to wear. And you see the ships ploughing their way through both, so you may seek His bounty and give thanks ˹to Him˺."

"He merges the night into the day and the day into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. That is Allah—your Lord! All authority belongs to Him. But those ˹idols˺ you ˹pagans˺ invoke besides Him do not possess even the skin of a date stone."

In stark contrast, whatever false powers we might elevate in our hearts possess absolutely no real control over the universe—not even over the microscopic, translucent film of a seed.

The word qitmir (the imperceptible membrane on a date stone) beautifully illustrates the absolute poverty of anything besides the Divine. When we seek ultimate security, status, or inner peace from the creation, we are essentially begging from entities that do not even own the dust of a seed. True liberation is found in directing our spiritual need exclusively to the true Owner of the cosmos.

"If you call upon them, they cannot hear your calls. And if they were to hear, they could not respond to you. On the Day of Judgment they will disown your worship ˹of them˺. And no one can inform you ˹O Prophet˺ like the All-Knowledgeable."

We exhaust ourselves crying out to things that cannot heal us. When you deeply admit you possess nothing of your own power, you become ready to receive everything from Al-Ghani (The Self-Sufficient). Emptiness is the prerequisite for being filled by the Divine.

"No soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another. And if a sin-burdened soul cries for help with its burden, none of it will be carried—even by a close relative. You ˹O Prophet˺ can only warn those who stand in awe of their Lord without seeing Him and establish prayer. Whoever purifies themselves, they only do so for their own good. And to Allah is the final return."

Or have We given the polytheists a Book, which serves as a clear proof for them? In fact, the wrongdoers promise each other nothing but delusion.”"

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُمْسِكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ أَن تَزُولَا ۚ وَلَئِن زَالَتَآ إِنْ أَمْسَكَهُمَا مِنْ أَحَدٍۢ مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ حَلِيمًا غَفُورًا
"Indeed, Allah ˹alone˺ keeps the heavens and the earth from falling apart. If they were to fall apart, none but Him could hold them up. He is truly Most Forbearing, All-Forgiving. "
Plain Understanding
A breathtaking reminder of the fragility of existence and the active, continuous care of the Creator. We walk the earth safely and sleep peacefully every night only because His unseen hand actively prevents the cosmos from unraveling.
Divine Wisdom
Notice the profound pairing of His majestic cosmic power with the attributes "Most Forbearing, All-Forgiving." Even as the inhabitants of the earth act with arrogance, forgetfulness, or rebellion, He does not let the earth crumble beneath their feet. He gently sustains the very universe in which we make our mistakes, patiently and mercifully keeping the doors of return open.
Purification of the Self
Just as He prevents the physical heavens from collapsing, He is the absolute force holding your inner world together. When your life feels as though it is falling apart and the weight of your circumstances becomes too heavy to bear, surrender your anxiety to the One who effortlessly holds the galaxies in place. If He sustains the stars, He can certainly hold your fragile heart.

وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ لَئِن جَآءَهُمْ نَذِيرٌۭ لَّيَكُونُنَّ أَهْدَىٰ مِنْ إِحْدَى ٱلْأُمَمِ ۖ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ نَذِيرٌۭ مَّا زَادَهُمْ إِلَّا نُفُورًا
"They swore by Allah their most solemn oaths that if a warner were to come to them, they would certainly be better guided than any other community. Yet when a warner did come to them, it only drove them farther away—"
Plain Understanding
A sobering reflection on the gap between our intentions and our actions. We often believe we would act righteously if only our circumstances were different or if the truth were made clearer to us, yet when the actual opportunity for guidance arrives, the resistant heart often pulls away.
Historical Context [Ibn Kathir]
Before the Prophet ﷺ was sent, the Quraysh would observe the followers of previous scriptures dividing into sects and failing their prophets. They swore solemn oaths that if a divine guide ever came to them, they would be the most guided of all nations. Yet, when the ultimate guide arrived, their tribal pride and attachment to the status quo led to bitter rejection.
Purification of the Self
The ego loves to construct an idealized version of itself in the future. It promises, "Tomorrow I will change, tomorrow I will be devout." But spirituality is measured by your surrender to the truth in the present moment, not your theoretical piety in a future that does not yet exist. Do not trust the oaths your ego makes about tomorrow; look at what your heart rejects today.

ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَكْرَ ٱلسَّيِّئِ ۚ وَلَا يَحِيقُ ٱلْمَكْرُ ٱلسَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِۦ ۚ فَهَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا سُنَّتَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ۚ فَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًۭا ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَحْوِيلًا
"behaving arrogantly in the land and plotting evil. But evil plotting only backfires on those who plot. Are they awaiting anything but the fate of those ˹destroyed˺ before? You will find no change in the way of Allah, nor will you find it diverted ˹to someone else˺."
Plain Understanding
A powerful declaration of divine justice. Arrogance and deceit are never victimless crimes; the spiritual and worldly consequences of malicious plotting inevitably circle back to consume the very hands that set them in motion.
Divine Wisdom
"You will find no change in the way of Allah." The universe operates on immutable moral laws just as it operates on immutable physical laws. Just as gravity pulls a falling object downward without exception, arrogance and deception eventually and unavoidably bring a soul to its own ruin. The delay in consequence is not an absence of consequence.

أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ وَكَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةًۭ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعْجِزَهُۥ مِن شَىْءٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَلَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَلِيمًۭا قَدِيرًا
"Have they not travelled throughout the land to see what was the end of those ˹destroyed˺ before them? They were far superior in might. But there is nothing that can escape Allah in the heavens or the earth. He is certainly All-Knowing, Most Capable."
Plain Understanding
An invitation to travel through the earth with an awakened heart. Looking upon the ruins of past civilizations reminds us that physical strength, technological superiority, and worldly dominance offer no immunity against the overarching decree of the Creator.
Purification of the Self
Physical travel should induce spiritual travel. The ruins of ancient empires are external manifestations of the ego's inevitable collapse. When you see fortresses turned to dust, recognize that your own internal empire of pride, status, and self-reliance will meet the exact same fate unless it is dismantled willingly in humility before the Divine.

وَلَوْ يُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ مَا تَرَكَ عَلَىٰ ظَهْرِهَا مِن دَآبَّةٍۢ وَلَـٰكِن يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى ۖ فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِۦ بَصِيرًۢا
"If Allah were to punish people ˹immediately˺ for what they have committed, He would not have left a single living being on earth. But He delays them for an appointed term. And when their time arrives, then surely Allah is All-Seeing of His servants."
Plain Understanding
A profound statement of divine patience that beautifully concludes the Surah. If the Creator demanded immediate, flawless perfection and exacted instant justice for every wrongdoing, life on Earth would cease to exist. Instead, He grants humanity the gift of time—a temporary window of grace to realize our mistakes, seek forgiveness, and course-correct before our ultimate return to Him.
Divine Wisdom
The delay in justice is never a sign of divine absence or negligence, but of His immense, active generosity. The "appointed term" is an extension of His mercy. He sees every hidden flaw and misstep, yet He purposefully shields us from the immediate consequences of our own hands, constantly extending a silent invitation to return to Him in love rather than in terror.
Purification of the Self
Recognize the profound humility this verse demands: every single breath you take is a breath sustained entirely by God's forbearance. When you witness the faults and shortcomings of others, let this verse temper your judgment. Remember that the Almighty has veiled your own hidden faults and delayed their consequences. Let His infinite patience with your soul inspire you to be deeply patient, gentle, and forgiving with His creation.
