Surah Al-Furqan

The Ultimate Standard. A profound revelation distinguishing truth from falsehood, addressing the heavy emotional burden of Prophethood, the desperate regrets of the disbelievers on Judgment Day, and the majestic traits of the Servants of the Merciful.
Verse 1
تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى نَزَّلَ ٱلْفُرْقَانَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ لِيَكُونَ لِلْعَٰلَمِينَ نَذِيرًا
"Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner -"
Plain Understanding
Supreme and overflowing with blessings is God, who sequentially revealed the Qur'an—the ultimate standard for judging right from wrong—to His devoted servant Muhammad, so that he may serve as a clear warner to all of humanity and the jinn.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Al-Furqan" (The Criterion) denotes that which decisively separates light from darkness. Without the Divine text, the human intellect becomes entirely subjected to the shifting tides of culture and ego. By granting the Prophet the title of "Abdihi" (His Servant), God establishes that true honor lies not in worldly dominion, but in absolute, perfected servanthood to the Divine.

Verse 2
ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَدًۭا وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ شَرِيكٌۭ فِى ٱلْمُلْكِ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍۢ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ تَقْدِيرًۭا
"He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination."
Plain Understanding
God is the exclusive owner of the entire universe. He has no offspring, nor does He share His absolute authority with any partner. He created absolutely everything in existence and designed each creation with flawless, mathematical precision and purpose.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
"Faqaddarahu taqdeera" (determined it with precise determination). Everything from the orbit of the galaxies to the beating of a human heart is governed by an exact, Divine measurement. Recognizing this Taqdeer extinguishes anxiety. The believer rests in the profound knowledge that their provision, their lifespan, and their trials are not the product of random chaos, but the deliberate architecture of the King.

Verse 3
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ ءَالِهَةًۭ لَّا يَخْلُقُونَ شَيْـًۭٔا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ وَلَا يَمْلِكُونَ لِأَنفُسِهِمْ ضَرًّۭا وَلَا نَفْعًۭا وَلَا يَمْلِكُونَ مَوْتًۭا وَلَا حَيَوٰةًۭ وَلَا نُشُورًۭا
"But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection."
Plain Understanding
Despite God's absolute power, the disbelievers choose to worship false deities. These idols cannot create even the smallest atom; they are themselves manufactured. They cannot protect themselves from harm, nor can they benefit themselves. Furthermore, they hold zero power over life, death, or raising the dead.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
This verse surgically dismantles the logic of idolatry. The Meccans carved statues of wood and stone, assigning them titles of divinity. God highlights the utter absurdity: How can you surrender your eternal soul to an object that cannot even swat a fly away from its own face, let alone resurrect a dead body on the Day of Judgment?

Verse 4
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ إِفْكٌ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ وَأَعَانَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ قَوْمٌ ءَاخَرُونَ ۖ فَقَدْ جَآءُو ظُلْمًۭا وَزُورًۭا
"And those who disbelieve say, 'This [Qur'an] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it.' But they have committed an injustice and a lie."
Plain Understanding
Unable to defeat the Qur'an intellectually, the disbelievers resort to slander: "Muhammad made this book up himself, and he hired foreigners to help him write it!" God responds, declaring their accusation to be a severe injustice and a blatant fabrication.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Ifkun" (a massive, inverted lie). When the ego is cornered by undeniable truth, it routinely resorts to conspiracy theories to protect its comfort. The Quraish knew the Prophet was unlettered (Ummi) and had a reputation of flawless honesty for forty years, yet they chose the intellectual dissonance of accusing him of forgery rather than bowing to his message.

Verse 5
وَقَالُوٓا۟ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ٱكْتَتَبَهَا فَهِىَ تُمْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ بُكْرَةًۭ وَأَصِيلًۭا
"And they say, 'Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon.'"
Plain Understanding
They continued their false accusations, saying: "These are just ancient fairy tales and myths that he ordered to be written down for him, and people are secretly reading them to him day and night."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
"Asatir al-Awwaleen" (tales of the ancients). The pagans observed the Qur'an mentioning historical figures like Moses and Abraham. Because they were unfamiliar with these narratives, they accused the Prophet of employing Christian or Jewish slaves in Mecca to secretly dictate these stories to him. The logic is inherently flawed: how could uneducated slaves dictate the highest pinnacle of Arabic literature that paralyzed the greatest poets of the era?

Verse 6
قُلْ أَنزَلَهُ ٱلَّذِى يَعْلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا
"Say, [O Muhammad], 'It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful.'"
Plain Understanding
The Prophet is instructed to deliver the absolute rebuttal: "This Book was not dictated by humans; it was sent down directly by the Almighty God, who knows every single hidden reality in the universe. Despite your massive lies, He remains Forgiving and Merciful if you repent."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Notice the Divine restraint. They accuse the Prophet of the ultimate fraud, yet God responds not with immediate annihilation, but by reminding them of His Forgiveness and Mercy ("Ghafooran Raheema"). The Qur'an acts as a mirror; it reveals the darkest secrets of their hearts, yet simultaneously leaves the door of redemption completely open.

Verse 7
وَقَالُوا۟ مَالِ هَٰذَا ٱلرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشِى فِى ٱلْأَسْوَاقِ ۙ لَوْلَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌۭ فَيَكُونَ مَعَهُۥ نَذِيرًا
"And they say, 'What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?'"
Plain Understanding
The disbelievers expressed their arrogant bewilderment regarding his humanity: "What kind of Prophet is this? He eats regular food and shops in the marketplace like an ordinary man! Why didn't God send an angel down to accompany him and prove his authority?"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The elite could not fathom that the sacred could be housed within the ordinary. Their egos demanded a Hollywood spectacle—an angelic escort—to validate the Divine. But God deliberately selected a human who experienced hunger, fatigue, and the mundane necessity of commerce, establishing that true spirituality is achieved amidst the struggles of the marketplace, not by escaping human nature.

Verse 8
أَوْ يُلْقَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ كَنزٌ أَوْ تَكُونُ لَهُۥ جَنَّةٌۭ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهَا ۚ وَقَالَ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلًۭا مَّسْحُورًا
"Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him, or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?' And the wrongdoers say, 'You follow not but a man affected by magic.'"
Plain Understanding
They continued to mock his economic status: "If he is really God's favorite, why hasn't a treasure chest fallen from the sky for him? Why doesn't he own a lush private garden to eat from?" Furthermore, the oppressors warned the public: "If you follow him, you are just following a man under a magical spell!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The Meccan elite equated divine favor exclusively with material wealth. In their worldview, a true king or prophet must possess vast economic resources ("Kanz"). By rejecting a poor Prophet, they revealed that their true religion was materialism. When neither the angel nor the gold materialized, they attempted to assassinate his character by labeling him "Mashura" (bewitched or insane).

Verse 9
ٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ ضَرَبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلْأَمْثَالَ فَضَلِّوا۟ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَبِيلًۭا
"Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way."
Plain Understanding
God tells the Prophet to observe their foolishness: "Look at the absurd labels and comparisons they invent for you—calling you a poet, a sorcerer, or a bewitched man. Their arguments contradict each other entirely because they have lost the path, and they are completely incapable of finding the truth."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
When the intellect severs its connection to God, it fractures. The polytheists could not agree on a single accusation. One day he is a master manipulator (forger); the next day he is a helpless victim of magic (bewitched). Falsehood is inherently unstable ("Fadalloo"). Truth requires no such mental gymnastics; it simply stands on its own unshakeable axis.

Verse 10
تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِىٓ إِن شَآءَ جَعَلَ لَكَ خَيْرًۭا مِّن ذَٰلِكَ جَنَّٰتٍۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ وَيَجْعَل لَّكَ قُصُورًۢا
"Blessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that - gardens beneath which rivers flow - and could make for you palaces."
Plain Understanding
Supreme is God, who, if He had desired, could have effortlessly granted you far greater worldly wealth than they demanded: sprawling gardens with flowing rivers, and magnificent, towering palaces in this very life.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The Prophet's poverty was not a defect of Divine capability; it was a deliberate Divine choice. By withholding palaces and gold from the greatest of all creations, God permanently devalues the Dunya in the eyes of the believer. True nobility is not the accumulation of palaces, but the capacity to walk through the marketplace anchored to the Heavens.

Verse 11
بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِمَن كَذَّبَ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ سَعِيرًۭا
"But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze."
Plain Understanding
Their demands for angels and treasures are merely excuses. The fundamental root of their rebellion is that they completely deny the reality of the Day of Judgment. And for those who reject the coming of the Hour, We have prepared a violently blazing Fire.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
God diagnoses the core pathology of the Meccan elite. Their issue was never a lack of evidence regarding the Prophet; their issue was their violent rejection of "As-Sa'ah" (The Hour). To accept the Hour means to accept accountability, which requires the dismantling of their oppressive economic and social structures. Their disbelief is rooted in greed, not logic.

Verse 12
إِذَا رَأَتْهُم مِّن مَّكَانٍۭ بَعِيدٍۢ سَمِعُوا۟ لَهَا تَغَيُّظًۭا وَزَفِيرًۭا
"When it [the Fire] sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring."
Plain Understanding
A terrifying personification of Hell: When the blazing Fire physically spots the disbelievers approaching from a great distance, they will hear it screaming and roaring in intense, boiling rage against them.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The Qur'an frequently depicts Hell not merely as a location, but as a sentient, conscious entity that possesses "Taghayyud" (furious anger) on behalf of the Creator. The roar of the Fire mirrors the arrogant roar of the oppressors on earth; the element of punishment matches the psychology of the crime perfectly.

Verse 13
وَإِذَآ أُلْقُوا۟ مِنْهَا مَكَانًۭا ضَيِّقًۭا مُّقَرَّنِينَ دَعَوْا۟ هُنَالِكَ ثُبُورًۭا
"And when they are thrown into a narrow place therein bound in chains, they will cry out thereupon for destruction."
Plain Understanding
And when they are forcibly hurled into a dark, suffocatingly narrow space within the Fire, their hands and feet chained tightly together, they will desperately scream for death to end their misery.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Mamanan Dayyiqan" (a narrow place). In the Dunya, their wealth afforded them vast mansions and expansive lands, allowing their egos to swell without constraint. Divine justice forces the expanded ego into absolute, claustrophobic physical constriction. The punishment strips away all space, forcing them to confront the suffocating reality of their own sins.

Verse 14
لَّا تَدْعُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ ثُبُورًۭا وَٰحِدًۭا وَٱدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًۭا كَثِيرًۭا
"[They will be told], 'Do not cry out today for one destruction, but cry out for much destruction.'"
Plain Understanding
The angels of punishment will reply to their screams: "Do not just beg for death to strike you once today! You should cry out for multiple, continuous deaths, because the agony you will face is endless, and you will not be allowed to die."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
"Thubur" means complete ruin or annihilation. The ultimate horror of the Akhirah for the condemned is the removal of mortality. In the earthly realm, death is the final escape hatch from unbearable pain. In Hell, the escape hatch is permanently sealed. They will beg for non-existence, but they are condemned to eternal awareness.

Verse 15
قُلْ أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ أَمْ جَنَّةُ ٱلْخُلْدِ ٱلَّتِى وُعِدَ ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ ۚ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَزَآءًۭ وَمَصِيرًۭا
"Say, 'Is that better or the Garden of Eternity which is promised to the righteous? It will be for them a reward and destination."
Plain Understanding
The Prophet is instructed to ask a profound, rhetorical question: "Is this terrifying destiny of chained agony better, or the eternal, magnificent Paradise that God has explicitly promised to those who maintain piety and consciousness of Him? That Paradise is their ultimate, earned reward and their final home."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
God juxtaposes the two ultimate realities to awaken the intellect. The "Jannat al-Khuld" (Garden of Eternity) is offered to the "Muttaqeen" (the cautious/pious). It requires temporary, manageable restraint in the Dunya to secure infinite, unimaginable expansion in the Akhirah. To trade the eternal Garden for the temporary illusions of the marketplace is the ultimate mathematical failure of the soul.

Verse 16
لَّهُمْ فِيهَا مَا يَشَآءُونَ خَٰلِدِينَ ۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ وَعْدًۭا مَّسْـُٔولًۭا
"For them therein is whatever they wish, [while] abiding eternally. It is ever upon your Lord a promise worthy to be requested.'"
Plain Understanding
Inside that Paradise, the believers will possess absolutely everything their hearts could possibly desire, remaining in that state of bliss forever. This is a binding promise from your Lord, a promise that the believers have every right to confidently request and expect from Him.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Wa'dan Mas'ula" (a promise requested). God obligates Himself through His Mercy to fulfill the hopes of His servants. The angels and the Prophets prayed for this outcome for the believers. It demonstrates the profound intimacy between the Creator and the righteous: the servant asks with brokenness in the Dunya, and the King responds with an eternal, unbreakable guarantee.

Verse 17
وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَقُولُ ءَأَنتُمْ أَضْلَلْتُمْ عِبَادِى هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ أَمْ هُمْ ضَلُّوا۟ ٱلسَّبِيلَ
"And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and will say, 'Did you mislead these, My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?'"
Plain Understanding
God highlights a future courtroom scene: On the Day of Resurrection, God will gather the idolaters along with all the entities they worshipped instead of Him (such as angels, prophets, saints, or jinn). God will publicly interrogate those worshipped beings: "Did you actively command My servants to go astray and worship you, or did they choose to lose the path all on their own?"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
This interrogation is not for God to acquire information, as He is Omniscient. It is a profound, public humiliation of the idolaters. They will stand trembling as the very "gods" they devoted their lives to (like Jesus, Ezra, or the Angels) publicly disown them and testify against their actions in the Supreme Court.

Verse 18
قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنۢبَغِى لَنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنْ أَوْلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِن مَّتَّعْتَهُمْ وَءَابَآءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَسُوا۟ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بُورًۭا
"They will say, 'Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined.'"
Plain Understanding
The worshipped entities (the Prophets and Angels) will reply in shock and absolute reverence: "Glory be to You! We would never dare take any protector or master other than You, let alone demand others to worship us! The reality is, You gave these people and their ancestors so much wealth and comfort that they became distracted, forgot Your warnings, and completely destroyed their own souls."

The righteous beings identify the true catalyst of the idolaters' ruin: "Matta'tahum" (You provided them comforts). It was not theological confusion that led them astray; it was the narcotic effect of unchecked worldly luxury. Comfort bred spiritual amnesia (forgetting the Dhikr), transforming them into "Qawman Boora" (a barren, completely hollowed-out people).

Verse 19
فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوكُم بِمَا تَقُولُونَ فَمَا تَسْتَطِيعُونَ صَرْفًۭا وَلَا نَصْرًۭا ۚ وَمَن يَظْلِم مِّنكُمْ نُذِقْهُ عَذَابًا كَبِيرًۭا
"So they will deny you in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you - We will make him taste a great punishment."
Plain Understanding
God will then turn to the idolaters and deliver the final verdict: "The very beings you worshipped have just exposed your lies! Now, you have absolutely no power to deflect the punishment, nor will you find anyone to help you. And know this: whoever among you persists in the injustice of disbelief will be made to taste a massive, horrific punishment."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The total collapse of the ego's external support systems. The idolater invested all their spiritual capital into a false bank, only to find the vault empty on the Day of Audit. The declaration "Fama Tastatee'una sarfan" seals their helplessness. Shirk (associating partners with God) is classified as the highest "Dhulm" (injustice) because it robs the Creator of His exclusive right to devotion.

Verse 20
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ لَيَأْكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشُونَ فِى ٱلْأَسْوَاقِ ۗ وَجَعَلْنَا بَعْضَكُمْ لِبَعْضٍۢ فِتْنَةً أَتَصْبِرُونَ ۗ وَكَانَ رَبُّكَ بَصِيرًۭا
"And We did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing."
Plain Understanding
God consoles the Prophet regarding the insults of Verse 7: "Every single Messenger We sent before you was a human being who ate food and walked in the marketplaces. We deliberately place humans of different statuses together to test you all. Will you maintain your patience? Do not worry; your Lord sees absolutely everything you endure."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
God establishes the sociological mechanism of the Dunya: "Fitnah" (Trial). The rich are a test for the poor (will they envy?), the poor are a test for the rich (will they oppress?), and the Prophets are a test for the masses (will you submit to a man who walks in the same market as you?). The entire human experience is a friction designed to extract either "Sabr" (patience) or rebellion. And the ultimate comfort is "Basira"—the King is watching.

Verse 21
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَرْجُونَ لِقَآءَنَا لَوْلَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ أَوْ نَرَىٰ رَبَّنَا ۗ لَقَدِ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَعَتَوْ عُتُوًّۭا كَبِيرًۭا
"And those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, 'Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?' They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and [become] insolent with great insolence."
Plain Understanding
Those who completely reject the concept of standing before God in the Hereafter make an outrageous demand: "Why doesn't God send angels directly to us, or why can't we just see God Himself?" God declares that this demand stems from a massive, deeply ingrained arrogance and extreme rebellion.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The root of their disbelief is exposed: "La yarjuna liqa'ana" (they do not expect Our meeting). When the soul severs its accountability to the Akhirah, the ego expands to the point of demanding direct visual access to the Sovereign. To demand that the Creator submit to the empirical verification of the creature is the ultimate "Utuww" (insolence).

Verse 22
يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ لَا بُشْرَىٰ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُجْرِمِينَ وَيَقُولُونَ حِجْرًۭا مَّحْجُورًۭا
"The Day they see the angels - no good tidings will there be that day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, 'Prevented and inaccessible.'"
Plain Understanding
They asked to see angels; God warns them of the Day they actually will. On the Day of Judgment, when the criminals finally see the angels, it will not be a joyful sight. The angels will declare that paradise and mercy are strictly, permanently forbidden to them.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
"Hijran Mahjura" was an ancient Arabic phrase used when encountering an enemy in the desert, meaning: "I seek an inviolable sanctuary from you." Here, the roles are reversed. The angels declare to the criminals that Paradise is an impenetrable sanctuary closed to them, or alternatively, the criminals themselves cry out this phrase in sheer terror, realizing the angels have arrived not as messengers, but as executioners.

Verse 23
وَقَدِمْنَآ إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ مِنْ عَمَلٍۢ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ هَبَآءًۭ مَّنثُورًۭا
"And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed."
Plain Understanding
God will evaluate all the seemingly "good" deeds the disbelievers performed in the worldly life (like charity or hospitality), and because those deeds were done without faith or sincerity to Him, He will turn them into scattered, weightless dust.

"The companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] a better settlement and better resting place."

In sharp contrast to the scattered dust of the criminals, the inhabitants of Paradise on that Day will be secured in a vastly superior settlement and enjoying the most excellent place of rest.

"Maqeela" refers specifically to the place where one takes a midday rest (Qailulah) to escape the peak heat of the sun. "True sovereignty, that Day, is for the Most Merciful. And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day."

On that Day, all worldly kingships and empires will vanish. Absolute, undeniable dominion will belong solely to the Most Merciful. And for those who actively rejected faith, it will be a severely harsh and agonizing Day.

Notice the Divine Name employed: "Ar-Rahman" (The Most Merciful). Even in the midst of the terrifying collapse of the cosmos, sovereignty is attributed to Mercy, not Wrath. For the believer, the Day is safe because their King is the Merciful. But for the disbeliever, the Day is "Aseer" (difficult) precisely because they spent their lives running away from the very Mercy that now dictates the courtroom.

"And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'"

On that Day, the unjust person will literally bite down on his own hands in absolute, agonizing regret, crying out: "I wish, oh how I wish, I had followed the path alongside the Messenger!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
This verse was revealed concerning Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt, a Meccan elite who actually leaned toward Islam and invited the Prophet ﷺ to a meal. However, his close friend, Ubayy bin Khalaf, shamed him for associating with Muhammad, demanding he insult the Prophet to maintain their friendship. Uqbah caved to peer pressure, severing his tie with the Prophet to appease his friend. This verse captures his eternal, physical manifestation of regret.

Verse 29

"'He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.'"

"Khadhula" means to promise help and then completely desert someone at the moment of crisis. The corrupt friend is identified as an agent of Satan. The devil encourages the sin, inflates the ego with a false sense of security, and the moment the Angel of Death arrives, he completely severs the contract, leaving the human to face the Divine wrath entirely unshielded.

"And the Messenger has said, 'O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned.'"

And on that Day, the Prophet will stand before God and make a devastating complaint: "O my Master! My people treated this Qur'an as something to be completely discarded and ignored."

"Mahjura" comes from Hijrah (to migrate or abandon). The pagans used to make noise and talk loudly when the Qur'an was recited to avoid hearing it. For believers, abandoning the Qur'an takes many forms: refusing to read it, reading it without attempting to understand it, or understanding it but refusing to implement its laws. The greatest advocate for humanity (the Prophet) becomes the primary witness against them regarding their treatment of the Book.

"And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper."

God consoles the Prophet regarding the hostility of his people: "Do not despair; this is the Divine pattern. For every single Prophet, We appointed enemies from among the wicked. But do not worry, your Lord is absolutely enough for you to guide you and grant you victory."

The existence of aggressive opposition is not a sign of Divine abandonment; it is the hallmark of Prophetic inheritance. Light necessitates the exposure of darkness, and the darkness will violently resist. The comfort lies not in the removal of the enemy, but in the realization that "Kafa bi-Rabbika" (Your Lord is sufficient). If the Guide and the Helper is God, the multitude of the criminals is mathematically irrelevant.

"The ones who are gathered on their faces to Hell - those are the worst in position and farthest astray in [their] way."

When asked how people could possibly walk on their faces, the Prophet ﷺ replied: "Is not the One who made them walk on their feet in this world able to make them walk on their faces on the Day of Resurrection?" The face is the physical seat of human honor and pride. Because they used their faces to look down upon the believers in the Dunya, Divine justice forces them to navigate the Akhirah dragging that exact pride through the dirt.

"And We said, 'Go both of you to the people who have denied Our signs.' Then We destroyed them with [complete] destruction."

We commanded them: "Go together to the nation of Pharaoh, who have violently rejected Our miracles." Despite Moses and Aaron's warnings, the regime persisted in denial, so We utterly and completely annihilated them.

And before them, the people of Noah: when they rejected their Prophet (which is akin to rejecting all Prophets), We drowned them in the Great Flood, turning their destruction into a permanent warning for all future generations. And We have prepared a deeply painful punishment for all oppressors.

Notice the phrase "denied the messengers" (plural), even though only Noah was sent to them. The message of Tawheed (Divine Oneness) is a unified continuum. And remember the annihilation of the powerful giant tribe of 'Aad, the mountain-carving tribe of Thamud, the people of Ar-Rass (the companions of the well), and countless other entire generations that existed between them.

"Ashab ar-Rass" were an ancient people who murdered their Prophet by throwing him into a deep well (Rass). God rattles off the names of these dead civilizations rapidly. To the Meccan ear, these were familiar, legendary empires of immense power. Their rapid listing emphasizes how quickly and effortlessly Divine Justice sweeps the board clean of human arrogance.

Before destroying them, We presented every single one of those nations with clear warnings, logical arguments, and parables to guide them. But when they stubbornly refused, We shattered them into absolute ruin.

The justice of God dictates that punishment never precedes education. "Darabna lahu al-amthal" (We presented examples). The intellect is fully engaged and warned before the physical penalty is enacted. The destruction ("Tabbarna") is total because the rejection of the Truth was total.

وَلَقَدْ أَتَوْا۟ عَلَى ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ٱلَّتِىٓ أُمْطِرَتْ مَطَرَ ٱلسَّوْءِ ۚ أَفَلَمْ يَكُونُوا۟ يَرَوْنَهَا ۚ بَلْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ نُشُورًۭا
"And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection."

The Meccans frequently travel past the ruins of Sodom (the city of Prophet Lot), which was obliterated by a terrifying rain of stones. Do they not see the physical evidence with their own eyes? They see it, but because they do not believe they will be resurrected and judged, the lesson does not register.

Physical sight is entirely useless without spiritual expectation. They travel to Syria for trade and pass the dead sea of Sodom; their physical eyes register the geography, but their hearts register nothing. Why? Because "la yarjuna nushura" (they do not expect resurrection). Without the lens of the Hereafter, the ruins of history are viewed merely as tourist attractions, not as urgent theological warnings.

وَإِذَا رَأَوْكَ إِن يَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا أَهَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى بَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ رَسُولًا
"And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in mockery, [saying], 'Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?'"

Whenever the elite cross paths with you in the city, their only reaction is sheer mockery. They point and laugh, saying: "Is this ordinary guy really the best God could do for a Messenger?"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
Abu Jahl and the aristocratic chiefs of Mecca used physical ridicule to undermine the Prophet's authority among the masses. They expected a Prophet to be flanked by guards and draped in silk. By reducing the Prophet to a punchline ("Huzuwan"), they sought to strip him of the dignity required for his message to be taken seriously by the public.

إِن كَادَ لَيُضِلُّنَا عَنْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لَوْلَآ أَن صَبَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا ۚ وَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ حِينَ يَرَوْنَ ٱلْعَذَابَ مَنْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا
"'He almost would have misled us from our gods, if we had not been steadfast in [worship of] them.' But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way."

They boast to each other: "His arguments are so persistent, he almost led us away from worshipping our idols! Thank goodness we were patiently devoted to them!" God ominously concludes: They will find out exactly who is the lost one the moment they stare directly into the punishment.

A profound psychological inversion. "Sabr" (patience/steadfastness) is the highest virtue of the believer, used to cling to the Truth. Here, the idolaters boast of their "Sabr" in clinging to falsehood. The ego possesses a terrifying capacity to rebrand its own stubborn ignorance as noble, spiritual resilience.

Verse 43
أَرَءَيْتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ أَفَأَنتَ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ وَكِيلًا
"Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?"
Plain Understanding
God asks the Prophet a defining question: "Have you observed the person who has made his own personal desires and impulses into his god? Can you possibly be a guardian over someone like that?"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
This verse identifies the ultimate, universal idol: "Hawa" (the ego's whims). Idolatry (Shirk) is not merely bowing to wood or stone; it is the subordination of the Divine Law to personal preference. When a person's morality is entirely dictated by what they "feel" like doing, they have legally crowned their ego as the sovereign deity. The Prophet is told he cannot guide a heart that is already actively worshipping itself.

"Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way."

To compare the aristocratic, poetry-loving elite of Mecca to grazing cattle ("An'am") is a devastating intellectual critique. A cow eats, sleeps, and follows the herd without reflecting on its origin or destination. A human who utilizes their highly advanced intellect merely to secure food, wealth, and status—ignoring the Creator entirely—is functioning strictly on a zoological level, effectively abandoning the dignity of their human design.

"Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indicator."

God draws attention to a daily phenomenon: the casting and stretching of shadows. God could have frozen the shadow in a permanent state, but instead, He made the movement of the sun the physical mechanism that dictates the shadow's length and direction.

The shadow is the ultimate metaphor for the Dunya (worldly life). In the morning of youth, the world stretches out long before you. But as the sun of your lifespan crosses its zenith, the shadow inevitably shrinks and vanishes. To chase a shadow is the definition of futility; it possesses no inherent reality, serving only as an "indicator" pointing back to the Creator of the Light.

ثُمَّ قَبَضْنَٰهُ إِلَيْنَا قَبْضًۭا يَسِيرًۭا
"Then We pull it to Us with a gradual pulling."

After the shadow extends, God gradually and smoothly retracts it back as the sun rises higher into the sky.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
"Qabdan yaseera" (a gradual pulling). God does not violently snatch the daylight or the shadow; He transitions them smoothly. This reflects the gentle unfolding of Divine Decree. Similarly, God often retracts worldly blessings from a servant gradually, allowing the soul the necessary time to adjust, reflect, and turn to Him before the darkness fully sets in.

Verse 47
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًۭا وَٱلنَّوْمَ سُبَاتًۭا وَجَعَلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ نُشُورًۭا
"And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection."
Plain Understanding
God engineered the night to act as a dark, protective covering over the earth, and He designed sleep to severe your connection to exertion. And He created the daylight to serve as a daily revival, scattering humanity across the earth to seek their provision.

"Nushura" directly translates to resurrection. The pagan Meccans vehemently denied the possibility of life after death. The Qur'an forces them to observe their own biology: sleep is the minor death, and waking is the minor resurrection. You undergo a biological resurrection every single morning; why do you deny the theological resurrection at the end of time?

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَرْسَلَ ٱلرِّيَٰحَ بُشْرًۢا بَيْنَ يَدَىْ رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ طَهُورًۭا
"And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure water."
Plain Understanding
God dispatches the winds as an announcement that His mercy (rain) is approaching. And from the clouds, He sends down water that is inherently pure and possesses the capacity to purify other things.

"Ma'an Tahoora" (pure and purifying water). The rain physically cleanses the earth of its physical filth. Similarly, the Revelation (Wahy) is the pure water sent from the Heavens to cleanse the human heart of its spiritual filth (Shirk and arrogance). Neither the earth nor the heart can generate their own purity; it must descend from Above.

لِّنُحْـِۧىَ بِهِۦ بَلْدَةًۭ مَّيْتًۭا وَنُسْقِيَهُۥ مِمَّا خَلَقْنَآ أَنْعَٰمًۭا وَأَنَاسِىَّ كَثِيرًۭا
"That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men."
Plain Understanding
The purpose of this pure water is to resurrect a barren, dead region of land, causing it to bloom, and to provide essential drinking water for the multitudes of cattle and human beings He has created.

Notice the hierarchy of Divine Provision. God revives the "dead land" first, which then sustains the "livestock," which then sustains the "men." The human being sits at the pinnacle of this complex ecological dependency. Total reliance on the Heavens is the inescapable physics of human existence; to act arrogantly while drinking water you did not create is profound ignorance.

Verse 50

"And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief."

God intentionally distributes the rain variably—giving it to some regions and withholding it from others—so that humanity might reflect on His control. Yet, despite this clear sign, the vast majority of people stubbornly reject gratitude and choose denial.

"Sarrafnahu" implies a calculated shifting or rotating. The Arabs noted that rain did not fall uniformly; one valley would be flooded while the neighboring valley suffered drought. This intentional variability proves that nature is not a blind, mechanical force, but is directed by a conscious Will. The refusal to acknowledge this Will constitutes "Kufoor" (active ingratitude and denial).

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَبَعَثْنَا فِى كُلِّ قَرْيَةٍۢ نَّذِيرًۭا
"And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner."

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
This is a Meccan Surah, revealed years before the Muslims were given permission to physically defend themselves in battle. Thus, "Jihadan Kabeera" (a great striving) refers exclusively to intellectual, moral, and spiritual perseverance. The ultimate weapon against the darkness of ignorance is the unyielding recitation and logical presentation of the Divine Text. The greatest struggle is the struggle of the Word.

Verse 53
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ هَٰذَا عَذْبٌۭ فُرَاتٌۭ وَهَٰذَا مِلْحٌ أُجَاجٌۭ وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخًۭا وَحِجْرًۭا مَّحْجُورًۭا
"And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition."

God engineered the oceans and rivers so that when sweet, fresh water flows into the salty, bitter sea, they do not immediately mix. God established an invisible, impenetrable barrier (Barzakh) between them, maintaining their distinct properties.

Verse 54
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ بَشَرًۭا فَجَعَلَهُۥ نَسَبًۭا وَصِهْرًۭا ۗ وَكَانَ رَبُّكَ قَدِيرًۭا
"And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent."
Plain Understanding
It is God who biologically crafted the human being from a fluid drop, and from that single origin, He constructed the complex societal networks of blood relations (lineage) and relations by marriage. Your Lord possesses absolute capability over all things.

The juxtaposition of water in Verse 53 and Verse 54 is masterful. From the physical water of the earth, God establishes geographical boundaries. Verse 55

"But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan]."

Despite witnessing the majestic architecture of the oceans and human biology, they choose to bow down to powerless objects that can neither benefit them nor harm them. Consequently, the disbeliever becomes an active accomplice and supporter of Satan in his rebellion against the Lord.

"Zaheera" means a supporter or partisan. Idolatry is not a victimless, passive error; it is an active political and spiritual alignment. By elevating a created object to the status of the Creator, the disbeliever effectively joins Satan's coalition, assisting the forces of falsehood in their campaign to obscure the truth from humanity.

Verse 56
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرًۭا وَنَذِيرًۭا
"And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner."

God sharply defines the Prophet's parameters: "We only dispatched you to deliver the joyful news of Paradise to the believers, and to deliver the strict warning of the Fire to the rebellious."

The ego of the Messenger is entirely relieved of the burden of conversion. You are not a controller, nor are you a spiritual enforcer. The perfection of the Prophetic mission lies entirely in the clarity of the "Bisharah" (glad tidings) and the "Nidharah" (warning). Verse 57

"Say, 'I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way.'"

The Prophet is instructed to declare: "I demand absolutely no financial compensation or worldly reward from you for delivering this message. My only desired 'payment' is to see whoever freely chooses to do so take the straight path back to their Lord."

The authenticity of the caller is verified by their financial detachment from the called. The Prophet's capital was the salvation of souls, not the accumulation of gold. To invite humanity to the Eternal King while charging a toll at the gate is a contradiction that invalidates the invitation.

God commands ultimate reliance: Place your complete trust exclusively in the One who is perpetually Alive and immune to death. Glorify Him constantly. You do not need to seek revenge against your enemies, for God is perfectly, intimately aware of every sin His servants commit, and His awareness is entirely sufficient.

"Al-Hayy alladhi la yamoot" (The Ever-Living who does not die). If you anchor your heart to a political leader, a spouse, or a bank account, your anchor will eventually perish, plunging you into despair. Tawakkul (reliance) is only logically sound when attached to the Eternal. You must tether your fragile, temporary existence to the Undying Reality.

Verse 59
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍۢ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۚ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ فَسْـَٔلْ بِهِۦ خَبِيرًۭا
"He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed."

He is the Supreme Architect who constructed the heavens, the earth, and everything in between in six distinct phases, and then established His sovereign authority over the Throne. He is the Most Merciful; if you wish to comprehend His majesty, ask the One who is infinitely aware of Him (or ask the Prophet who brings His message).
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The mention of "six days" (Ayyam) does not denote twenty-four-hour earthly cycles, as the sun and earth were not yet fully formed, but rather distinct cosmic eras or phases of creation. God couples the awe-inspiring immensity of the "Arsh" (Throne) with the name "Ar-Rahman" (The Merciful), ensuring that His terrifying, boundless power is always understood through the lens of His overarching grace.

Verse 60 ۩ (Sajdah)
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ أَنَسْجُدُ لِمَا تَأْمُرُنَا وَزَادَهُمْ نُفُورًۭا ۩
"And when it is said to them, 'Prostrate to the Most Merciful,' they say, 'And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?' And it increases them in aversion."
Plain Understanding
When the disbelievers are instructed to humbly bow down to the Most Merciful God, they arrogantly mock the Name, asking: "Who is this 'Merciful' you speak of? Are we supposed to just drop to the floor for whatever you command us?" Their pride causes the invitation to actually push them further away. (It is highly recommended to physically prostrate to God upon reading this verse).
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The absolute tragedy of the diseased heart. They are invited to bow to "Ar-Rahman" (The Source of all Mercy and Love), yet they recoil in disgust. When the ego becomes inflamed with self-worship, the very mention of submission, even to Infinite Love, is perceived as a violent threat to its autonomy. Their aversion ("Nufoora") is the symptom of a terminal spiritual sickness.

Verse 61
تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًۭا وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَٰجًۭا وَقَمَرًۭا مُّنِيرًۭا
"Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon."

In contrast to their mockery, God declares His own exalted nature: Exalted and full of blessings is the One who constructed the massive constellations in the sky, placing within it the blazing sun as a lamp, and the moon to reflect a beautiful, guiding light.

"Burooj" refers to the great castles or constellations of stars in the cosmos, serving as celestial navigation points. The Qur'an uses high-precision terminology: the sun is a "Siraj" (a lamp that generates its own burning heat and light), while the moon is "Muneer" (a luminous body that merely reflects light). The majesty of the night sky stands as a silent, crushing rebuttal to those who ask, "What is the Merciful?"

Verse 62
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ خِلْفَةًۭ لِّمَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يَذَّكَّرَ أَوْ أَرَادَ شُكُورًۭا
"And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude."

God explicitly designed the strict rotation of day and night for a profound psychological purpose: to provide continuous, alternating opportunities for the human being who actively wants to remember God, or who desires to express gratitude to Him.

"Khilfatan" (in succession). The Divine Mercy in time management. If a servant misses their spiritual devotion or reflection during the exhaustion of the day, God graciously brings the quiet of the night to replace it. If they sleep through the night, God brings the day to allow them to catch up. The cosmos itself operates as a rotating mechanism designed exclusively to facilitate human repentance and gratitude.

Verse 63
وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ هَوْنًۭا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ ٱلْجَٰهِلُونَ قَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًۭا
"And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace."
Plain Understanding
The true worshippers of God are defined by two public characteristics: they walk upon the earth with dignity and gentleness, devoid of arrogance; and when foolish or hostile people address them, they respond with words of safety and disengagement.

"Hawnan" denotes a gait of profound serenity and internal gravity. The servants are anchored by their connection to "Ar-Rahman" (The Merciful). Consequently, the provocations of the ignorant ("Al-Jahilun") fail to disrupt their internal state. To reply with "Salam" is not a sign of weakness, but the ultimate display of spiritual containment, refusing to let the darkness of another dictate one's own light.

Verse 64
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًۭا وَقِيَٰمًۭا
"And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]."

Following their public humility, their private reality is revealed: they dedicate the hours of the night exclusively to their Lord, alternating between the postures of standing in reverence and bowing in prostration.

"Yabitoon" signifies spending the night. Verse 63 highlights their etiquette with the creation by day; Verse 64 highlights their etiquette with the Creator by night (Tahajjud). The sincerity (Ikhlas) of their faith is verified in the dark, where the gaze of society is entirely removed. The physical exhaustion of the night prayer becomes the spiritual fuel for their gentle walking during the day.

"And those who say, 'Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;'"

Despite their intense worship at night, they do not feel entitled to safety. They constantly plead: "Our Lord, turn away from us the torment of Hellfire, for its punishment is a permanent, inseparable affliction."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
"Gharaman" means a debt that clings inextricably to the debtor, or an inseparable torment. The hallmark of true piety is the absence of spiritual arrogance. The more they worship, the more acutely aware they become of the Majestic Holiness of God and their own inherent shortcomings, driving them to beg for protection rather than demand a reward.

إِنَّهَا سَآءَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّۭا وَمُقَامًۭا
"'Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence.'"

"Truly, it is the most wretched place to settle in, and the most horrifying permanent residence."

The juxtaposition of "Mustaqarran" (a temporary stop) and "Muqaman" (a permanent residence). Hell is entirely devoid of comfort, whether one passes through it temporarily or abides in it eternally. The believers recognize that trading the eternal residence of Paradise for the fleeting pleasures of the Dunya is the ultimate failure of intellect.

وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا۟ وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا۟ وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ قَوَامًۭا
"And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate."
Plain Understanding
Their financial ethics are perfectly balanced. When they spend their wealth, they do not waste it extravagantly, nor are they stingy and miserly. They firmly maintain a just, middle path between the two extremes.

"Qawaman" (upright/moderate). Islam is the religion of the golden mean (Wasatiyyah). Israf (extravagance) destroys the wealth and inflates the ego, while Taqtir (stinginess) destroys trust in Divine provision and suffocates the heart. The servant of the Merciful views wealth as a tool entrusted to them by God, deploying it with precision rather than emotion.

Verse 68
وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ ٱلنَّفْسَ ٱلَّتِى حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًۭا
"And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty."

They absolutely protect themselves from the three major, destructive sins: they never worship any false god alongside Allah, they never murder a human soul (which God made sacred) without legal justification, and they never commit adultery or fornication. Whoever commits these acts will face severe consequences.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
These three sins represent the ultimate violation of the three primary sacred trusts: Shirk violates the rights of the Creator; Murder violates the physical sanctity of the creation; and Zina (fornication) violates the societal sanctity of lineage and honor. The servant of the Merciful must possess an impermeable boundary regarding these foundational moral laws.

يُضَـٰعَفْ لَهُ ٱلْعَذَابُ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ وَيَخْلُدْ فِيهِۦ مُهَانًا
"Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -"
Plain Understanding
For the one who commits those major crimes, the agonizing punishment will be continuously doubled on Judgment Day, and they will remain in that state, utterly disgraced and humiliated forever.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Muhanan" (humiliated). The punishment is not merely physical ("multiplied torment"), but intensely psychological. In the Dunya, murder, illegitimate wealth, and forbidden desires are often utilized by the ego to assert dominance and avoid humiliation. Divine justice perfectly reverses the equation: the pursuit of unlawful honor guarantees eternal, inescapable disgrace.

Verse 70
إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًۭا صَـٰلِحًۭا فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ ٱللَّهُ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ حَسَنَـٰتٍۢ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا
"Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful."
Plain Understanding
There is an immense exception: Whoever deeply regrets their sins, turns back to faith, and proves it through righteous actions—God will miraculously transform their past evil deeds into good deeds on their record. Truly, God is boundlessly Forgiving and Merciful.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
This is one of the most hope-inducing verses in the Qur'an. "Yubaddilu Allahu sayyi'atihim hasanat" (Allah replaces their evil with good). True repentance (Tawbah) does not merely erase the black ink of sin; through Divine alchemy, the sorrow, regret, and newfound humility generated by that sin are converted into pure spiritual capital. The deeper the prior darkness, the brighter the subsequent light of repentance.

وَمَن تَابَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًۭا فَإِنَّهُۥ يَتُوبُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَتَابًۭا

And whoever genuinely repents and follows it up with good deeds has undeniably achieved a complete, successful return to Allah.

"Mataba" signifies an absolute, structurally sound return. Repentance is not a mere verbal apology; it requires the physical corroboration of "Amila salihan" (doing righteousness). When the internal regret aligns with external reform, the servant's return to the Creator is guaranteed acceptance.

Verse 72
وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِٱللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا۟ كِرَامًۭا
"And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity."
Plain Understanding
The servants of the Merciful never participate in bearing false witness or attending gatherings of falsehood. And if they accidentally happen upon foolishness, gossip, or vain talk, they do not engage; they simply walk past it with noble dignity.

"Marru kiraman" (they pass by with dignity). The believer does not possess a combative necessity to correct every fool or engage in every trivial dispute. True spiritual dignity is the realization that your time and emotional energy are sacred trusts. You honor the Divine presence within you by refusing to lower yourself into the mud of vain discourse (Laghw).

Verse 73
وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَمْ يَخِرُّوا۟ عَلَيْهَا صُمًّۭا وَعُمْيَانًۭا
"And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind."
Plain Understanding
When they are reminded of the verses and warnings of their Lord, they do not react like deaf and blind people, ignoring the message. Instead, they listen attentively, reflect deeply, and change their behavior.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Faith requires active intellectual engagement. To fall upon the verses "deaf and blind" means to perform religious rituals mechanically, without the heart absorbing the meaning. The Servant of the Merciful is acutely sensitive to the Qur'an; when the verses are recited, their spiritual vision and hearing are entirely activated, resulting in profound internal transformation.

"And those who say, 'Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.'"
Plain Understanding
Their concern extends beyond themselves. They fervently pray: "Our Lord, bless us with spouses and children who will be a deep source of joy and peace to our eyes, and make us noble leaders and role models for those who are righteous."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
"Qurrata a'yun" (comfort to the eyes) is an ancient Arabic idiom. In the blowing sand of the desert, one must constantly squint and cover their eyes in anxiety. To find "comfort to the eyes" means to find a safe harbor where the eyes can finally rest open and relaxed. The ultimate comfort for a believer is not merely seeing their family wealthy, but seeing them firmly established upon obedience to God. Furthermore, seeking to be an "Imam" (leader) for the righteous is not an expression of ego, but a desire to pioneer the establishment of virtue.

Verse 75
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُجْزَوْنَ ٱلْغُرْفَةَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَيُلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةًۭ وَسَلَٰمًا
"Those will be awarded the Chamber for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and [words of] peace."
Plain Understanding
Because they embodied these magnificent traits and patiently endured the trials of the world, they will be rewarded with the highest, most exalted chambers in Paradise. Upon entering, they will be honored with beautiful greetings of absolute peace.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The transaction is clearly defined: "Bima sabaru" (because they were patient). The attributes listed from verses 63 to 74—humility, night prayer, financial discipline, sexual purity, emotional restraint, and concern for family—all require immense, exhausting Sabr (patience). "Al-Ghurfah" represents the highest, most elevated palaces of Jannah, perfectly compensating for the difficulty of lowering the ego in the Dunya.

Verse 76
خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ حَسُنَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّۭا وَمُقَامًۭا
"Abiding eternally therein. Good is the settlement and residence."
Plain Understanding
They will remain inside those exalted chambers forever. What an unimaginably beautiful place to settle in, and what a perfect, eternal home.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
This verse deliberately mirrors the terrifying description of Hell in Verse 66 ("evil as a settlement and residence"). The Qur'an frequently utilizes absolute contrast to awaken the intellect. The momentary patience of the Dunya buys an eternal "Muqaman" (residence) of unshakeable safety.

Verse 77
قُلْ مَا يَعْبَؤُا۟ بِكُمْ رَبِّى لَوْلَا دُعَآؤُكُمْ ۖ فَقَدْ كَذَّبْتُمْ فَسَوْفَ يَكُونُ لِزَامًۢا
"Say, 'What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?' For you [disbelievers] have denied, so your denial is going to be adherent."
Plain Understanding
The Surah closes with a profound declaration to humanity: "Tell them: My Lord would not care about you or give you any weight at all, if it were not for your prayers and your calling upon Him. But since you disbelievers have stubbornly denied Him, the inescapable punishment will cling to you permanently."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
"Ma ya'ba'u" signifies placing weight or value upon something. The absolute majesty of God does not require human existence. The only variable that grants a human being cosmic "weight" or significance in the sight of the Creator is their "Du'a" (their supplication, worship, and reliance upon Him). Without the humility of prayer, the human is spiritually weightless, and thus their persistent denial ("Kadhdhabtum") seals their inevitable ruin ("Lizama").
