"He said, 'My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unblessed.'"
Plain UnderstandingHe prayed: "My Lord! The bones within me have grown frail, and the hair on my head is completely white with old age. Yet, despite my physical weakness, I have never once been disappointed or unblessed when calling upon You."

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Zechariah’s desire for a child was entirely devoid of worldly ego. He did not seek an heir to inherit wealth (Prophets leave no financial inheritance), but rather to inherit the heavy mantle of Prophethood and the preservation of the Torah. He asks for a miracle "min ladunka" (directly from Your presence), acknowledging that biological laws (a barren wife and old age) completely prohibit this occurrence without direct Divine intervention.

"[He was told], 'O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name.'"

Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The response is instantaneous and overwhelming. God not only grants the son, but God personally names him. "Yahya" means "he lives." He was named this because his heart would live perpetually through faith, and his mother's barren womb was brought to life to carry him. When the Divine grants a request, He perfects every detail of its manifestation.

"He said, 'My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?'"
Plain UnderstandingShocked by the glad tidings, Zechariah asked: "My Lord, how can it be physically possible for me to have a son when my wife is completely barren, and I have withered into extreme, frail old age?"

"Itiyya" signifies the drying up of the bones and the absolute end of reproductive vitality. He is asking whether God will restore his youth and his wife's fertility, or grant them the child despite their withered states.

"[An angel] said, 'Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, "It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing."'"
Plain UnderstandingThe angel replied on behalf of God: "That is exactly how it will happen. Your Lord declares: 'This matter is entirely easy for Me. After all, I created you in the past when you were absolutely nothing!'"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Huwa 'alayya hayyin" (It is easy for Me). The human intellect calculates probability based on biological cause and effect (a fertile man and a fertile woman). The Divine Intellect operates outside of biology entirely. If God brought the complex architecture of your existence out of the void of absolute nothingness, bypassing a barren womb requires absolutely zero effort.

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجْعَل لِّىٓ ءَايَةًۭ ۚ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَٰثَ لَيَالٍۢ سَوِيًّۭا
"He said, 'My Lord, make for me a sign.' He said, 'Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound.'"
Plain UnderstandingOverjoyed, Zechariah requested: "My Lord, give me a physical sign so I know when the pregnancy has occurred." God answered: "Your sign is that you will be completely unable to speak to people for three full days and nights, even though you are perfectly healthy."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The "Sign" (Ayah) is deeply symbolic. God removes Zechariah's ability to engage in worldly conversation, forcing him into a state of "Sawiyya" (sound, yet silent). When anticipating the arrival of a profound Divine Gift, the tongue must be restrained from the chatter of the creation so the heart can fully engage in the remembrance of the Creator.

"So he came out to his people from the sanctuary and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] morning and afternoon."
Plain UnderstandingZechariah emerged from his prayer sanctuary to face his congregation. Unable to speak, he used hand gestures to instruct them to continuously glorify God in the morning and the late afternoon.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The "Mihrab" was the elevated, sacred chamber in the Temple of Jerusalem where Zechariah officiated. Realizing the miracle had been enacted in his household, his immediate reflex was not self-congratulation, but rather mobilizing his entire community into intensified "Tasbeeh" (glorification). A true leader redirects the joy of the blessing back to the praise of the Provider.

Plain UnderstandingThe narrative fast-forwards to John's youth. God commands him: "O John, hold firmly to the Torah with absolute strength!" And God granted him profound wisdom, judgment, and prophethood while he was still just a child.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Hukm" implies sound judgment, understanding of the Divine Law, and the maturity of Prophethood. God shatters the human expectation that wisdom is solely the product of old age. When God chooses a vessel, He can instill the gravity and intellect of a patriarch into the heart of a "Sabiyya" (a small boy). The mandate "take the Scripture with strength" defines his entire life: uncompromising adherence to the Truth.

"And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah."
Plain UnderstandingFurthermore, God granted John a deep, inherent tenderness and compassion directly from Himself, along with immaculate spiritual purity. And he was a man of intense piety and God-consciousness.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Hanan" is a profound, aching compassion and sympathetic love for creation. It is explicitly described as originating "min ladunna" (from Our presence). A Prophet cannot carry the strictness of the Law (taking the Book with strength) without simultaneously carrying the tenderness of "Hanan." Strength without compassion breeds tyranny; compassion without strength breeds compromise. John possessed the perfect synthesis.

وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ وَلَمْ يَكُن جَبَّارًا عَصِيًّۭا
"And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant."
Plain UnderstandingJohn was exceptionally kind, dutiful, and devoted to his elderly parents. He was entirely free of arrogance, and was never a rebellious or cruel tyrant.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Barran bi-walidayhi" (dutiful to his parents). The Qur'an inextricably links piety toward God with exemplary kindness toward parents. A person who is arrogant ("Jabbar") and disobedient ("Asiyya") toward the parents who raised him in weakness cannot claim to be obedient to the Creator who fashioned him. True religious elevation is proven in the humility of the home.

وَسَلَٰمٌ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ وُلِدَ وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّۭا
"And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive."
Plain UnderstandingAnd the absolute peace and safety of God was declared upon him on the three most vulnerable days of his existence: the day he entered the world, the day he departed it in death, and the Day he will be resurrected back to life.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)These are the three terrifying transitions of the human soul. Birth: leaving the safety of the womb for the trials of the Dunya. Death: leaving the familiarity of the Dunya for the isolation of the Barzakh (grave). Resurrection: leaving the Barzakh for the awe of the Divine Court. Because John lived his life in a state of purity and tenderness, the Divine "Salam" (Peace) guarantees his absolute safety across all three cosmic thresholds.

"And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book, Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east."

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Intabadhat" implies an intentional casting away or withdrawal. Mary, dedicated to the service of the Temple in Jerusalem since birth, sought complete spiritual isolation (I'tikaf) to dedicate herself exclusively to the worship of God, moving to an eastern chamber to secure uninterrupted privacy.

فَٱتَّخَذَتْ مِن دُونِهِمْ حِجَابًۭا فَأَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْهَا رُوحَنَا فَتَمَثَّلَ لَهَا بَشَرًۭا سَوِيًّۭا
"And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man."
Plain UnderstandingShe placed a physical barrier between herself and the people to ensure complete seclusion. In that highly private state, God dispatched His Angel (Gabriel) to her, who appeared before her visually as a perfectly formed, flawless human man.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The "Hijab" (screen) represents the absolute detachment of the heart from the creation in order to receive the Creator's mandate. The descent of "Ruhana" (Our Spirit/Gabriel) in the form of a human was a profound test. God frequently veils His greatest interventions in ordinary, human forms to test the spiritual discernment and purity of His servants.

قَالَتْ إِنِّىٓ أَعُوذُ بِٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ مِنكَ إِن كُنتَ تَقِيًّۭا
"She said, 'Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.'"
Plain UnderstandingTerrified by the sudden appearance of a strange man in her private quarters, Mary immediately defended herself, declaring: "I seek absolute protection in the Most Merciful God from you! If you have any piety or fear of God, do not come near me!"

Faced with a perfectly handsome man in absolute isolation, her immediate, visceral reflex is not curiosity or temptation, but Isti'adhah (seeking Divine refuge). "He said, 'Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, "It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed."'"
Plain UnderstandingThe angel responded: "That is exactly how it will happen. Your Lord declares: 'Bypassing the laws of biology is incredibly easy for Me. We intend to make this child a miraculous sign for humanity, and a manifestation of Our mercy.' The decision has already been finalized."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Huwa 'alayya hayyin" (It is easy for Me). The same phrase spoken to Zechariah (Verse 9) is now spoken to Mary. God created Adam without a male or female; He created Eve from a male without a female; He creates humanity from a male and a female. The virgin birth of Jesus (from a female without a male) completes the quadrant of Divine capability, proving that the Creator is the Author of biology, not its subject.

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Qasiyya" denotes a far, distant place (most scholars identify this as Bethlehem, away from her family in Nazareth/Jerusalem). The psychological burden placed upon Mary was astronomical. She was the most pious woman of the Israelites; to bear a child without a husband would guarantee her reputation being destroyed and potentially face execution by stoning under Mosaic Law. Her withdrawal was an act of profound self-preservation and reliance on God.

فَأَجَآءَهَا ٱلْمَخَاضُ إِلَىٰ جِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ قَالَتْ يَٰلَيْتَنِى مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَٰذَا وَكُنتُ نَسْيًۭا مَّنسِيًّۭا
"And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, 'Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.'"
Plain UnderstandingWhen the excruciating physical pains of labor struck her, she was forced to lean against the trunk of a date-palm tree for support. Crushed by physical agony and the terror of societal disgrace, she cried out: "Oh, I wish I had died before this ever happened, and was entirely erased from memory!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)This verse validates the absolute reality of human suffering. Mary, the greatest woman in history, reaches the threshold of her psychological endurance ("Ya laytani mittu"). Her wish for death is not an act of disbelief; it is the sheer panic of a chaste woman facing the destruction of her honor. The Qur'an does not sanitize the pain of the chosen ones; it highlights their fragility to demonstrate that sainthood does not exempt one from the crushing weight of the human condition.

فَنَادَىٰهَا مِن تَحْتِهَآ أَلَّا تَحْزَنِى قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّۭا
"But he called her from below her, 'Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.'"
Plain UnderstandingIn the midst of her darkest despair, a voice called out to her from beneath her (either the angel or the newborn Jesus), saying: "Do not be sad! Look, your Lord has miraculously caused a fresh stream of water to flow right beneath your feet."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Alla tahzani" (Do not grieve). At the exact moment her despair peaks, Divine comfort manifests physically. The provision of the stream ("Sariyya") addresses her immediate biological need for water during childbirth, but it also serves as a profound theological anchor: The Lord who commands water to flow from barren dirt in the desert will undoubtedly protect your honor in the city.

وَهُزِّىٓ إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ تُسَٰقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًۭا جَنِيًّۭا
"'And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe voice continued instructing her: "And reach out and shake the massive trunk of the palm tree toward yourself; it will drop perfect, fresh, and ripe dates down upon you to eat."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)This verse establishes a core Islamic principle regarding reliance on God (Tawakkul). It is physically impossible for a woman in active labor to shake the thick trunk of a date palm hard enough to drop fruit. God could have dropped the dates without her effort. Yet, He commanded her to "shake" the tree. The servant is required to exhaust their physical effort (Asbab), no matter how weak, and the Creator will generate the miraculous outcome.

فَكُلِى وَٱشْرَبِى وَقَرِّى عَيْنًۭا ۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ ٱلْبَشَرِ أَحَدًۭا فَقُولِىٓ إِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ صَوْمًۭا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّۭا
"'So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.''"
Plain Understanding"So eat the dates, drink the water, and let your eyes rest in peace. When you finally return to the city and people interrogate you, do not defend yourself. Simply signal to them: 'I have made a holy vow of silence to the Merciful God, and I will not speak a single word to any human today.'"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Sawm" (fasting) in their law included abstaining from speech. God commands Mary to remain completely silent in the face of her accusers. When the accusation is unimaginably massive and societal logic is entirely stacked against you, human speech is useless. By taking the vow of silence, God transfers the burden of her defense from her own tongue directly to Divine intervention.

فَأَتَتْ بِهِۦ قَوْمَهَا تَحْمِلُهُۥ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَٰمَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْـًۭٔا فَرِيًّۭا
"Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, 'O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.'"
Plain UnderstandingWith immense courage, she walked back into her city carrying the infant Jesus in her arms. The moment her people saw her, they erupted in shock and anger: "O Mary! What is this? You have committed a horrific, monstrous, and unprecedented crime!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Fariyya" signifies something massively forged or a grave, shocking sin. For the pious community of the Temple, seeing the devout virgin returning with an illegitimate child was the ultimate scandal. The trial of Mary reaches its agonizing climax; she stands entirely alone before a furious society ready to condemn her to death.

"'O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire].'"

Abraham leaves his father, his home, and his inheritance. The structural loss of his earthly family is immediately replaced by absolute reliance on Divine intimacy. The servant who abandons the world for God will never find themselves abandoned by God.

"Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping."

Therefore, they will violently collide with ruin and destruction in Hell.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Aada'u as-Salah" (neglected/lost the prayer) does not merely mean praying late; it means structurally dismantling the connection to the Divine. The verse establishes a terrifying cause-and-effect relationship: The moment the anchor of the prayer is severed, the soul is instantly swept away by the aggressive currents of "Shahawat" (lusts/desires). The loss of Salah guarantees the triumph of the ego.

إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَٰلِحًۭا فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ شَيْـًۭٔا
"Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all."
Plain UnderstandingHowever, the door of mercy remains open: Whoever wakes up, deeply repents for abandoning their prayer, renews their faith, and corrects their actions—they will be saved. They will enter Paradise, and they will not be cheated out of the smallest reward.

The servant labored in the Dunya, sacrificing their tangible desires for an intangible promise. Upon entering the "Jannat 'Adn" (Gardens of Eden), the veil is lifted, and the invisible theology transforms into physical, eternal reality. The King's word ("Wa'duhu") is infallible.

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا إِلَّا سَلَٰمًۭا ۖ وَلَهُمْ رِزْقُهُمْ فِيهَا بُكْرَةًۭ وَعَشِيًّۭا
"They will not hear therein any vain discourse, but only [greetings of] peace. And they will have their provision therein, morning and afternoon."
Plain UnderstandingInside Paradise, they will never hear useless gossip, arguments, or bad words. They will only hear words of absolute peace. And their perfect, customized sustenance will be brought to them effortlessly, morning and evening.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Laghw" encompasses lies, arguments, anxiety, and trivial noise. The earthly life is saturated with auditory pollution and psychological friction. Heaven is defined by absolute acoustic and emotional purity; the only sound is "Salam" (Peace). The reference to "morning and afternoon" implies a rhythm of delightful anticipation and continuous, varied provision, though actual time (as driven by the sun) ceases to exist.

تِلْكَ ٱلْجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِى نُورِثُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا مَن كَانَ تَقِيًّۭا
"That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allah."
Plain UnderstandingThis magnificent, flawless Paradise is the exact inheritance God will legally hand over to those servants who lived their earthly lives consciously protecting themselves from sin.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Noorithu" (We give as inheritance). An inheritance is typically received after the death of another. The Prophet ﷺ stated that every human is assigned a place in Heaven and a place in Hell. When the disbelievers occupy their seats in Hell, their empty seats in Heaven are "inherited" by the Muttaqeen (the God-conscious). Piety secures both your own mansion and the vacant mansions of the arrogant.

وَمَا نَتَنَزَّلُ إِلَّا بِأَمْرِ رَبِّكَ ۖ لَهُۥ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَمَا خَلْفَنَا وَمَا بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ نَسِيًّۭا
"[Gabriel said], 'And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And never is your Lord forgetful -'"
Plain UnderstandingAfter a pause in revelation, the Angel Gabriel finally appeared and explained to the Prophet: "We angels cannot come down to earth whenever we want; we move strictly by God's command. God completely owns the future, the past, and the present. And rest assured, your Lord did not forget you during the silence."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Revelation (Wahy) was temporarily delayed for several weeks. The Prophet ﷺ missed Gabriel deeply and asked him, "What prevents you from visiting us more often?" This verse is Gabriel's majestic, submissive response. Angels lack autonomy; they are instruments of the Divine Will. The silence of the heavens is not abandonment; it is a calculated decree from a Lord who is inherently incapable of "Nisyan" (forgetfulness).

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَٱعْبُدْهُ وَٱصْطَبِرْ لِعِبَادَتِهِۦ ۚ هَلْ تَعْلَمُ لَهُۥ سَمِيًّۭا
"Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"
Plain UnderstandingHe is the absolute Master of the entire universe and everything within it. Therefore, dedicate your worship exclusively to Him, and endure patiently in your devotion. Do you know of anything or anyone in existence that is even remotely comparable or equal to Him?
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Wastabir li-'ibadatihi" (and have patience for His worship). True worship is not a momentary burst of spiritual enthusiasm; it requires grueling, relentless consistency. "Istibār" signifies a heavy, strenuous patience—forcing the ego to bow when it is exhausted, distracted, or grieving. The rhetorical question at the end destroys all alternatives: Since there is no equivalent to the Creator ("Samiyya"), abandoning Him for the creation is the ultimate logical fallacy.

وَيَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَءِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا
"And the human being says, 'When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?'"
Plain UnderstandingThe arrogant human being mocks the concept of the Hereafter, asking with deep skepticism: "Once I am dead and turned to dust, am I really going to be pulled out of the grave alive again?"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)This verse addresses the pervasive materialist worldview of the Meccan elite (such as Ubayy ibn Khalaf or Abu Jahl), who believed that consciousness was strictly an emergent property of biology. To them, the decay of the physical body meant the absolute annihilation of the self. The Qur'an highlights this skepticism not as a genuine intellectual inquiry, but as a deliberate psychological defense mechanism to evade moral accountability.

أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْـًٔا
"Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?"

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ ثُمَّ لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ حَوْلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيًّا
"So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees."
Plain UnderstandingGod swears a terrifying oath by Himself: "By your Lord, We will absolutely gather all these deniers along with the devils who misled them, and We will drag them all around the edges of the Hellfire, forcing them down on their knees in utter terror and humiliation."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Jithiyya" (on their knees). In the Dunya, they refused to bend their knees in voluntary prostration (Sujud) to the Merciful. Consequently, Divine Justice forces their knees to bend involuntarily at the precipice of the Fire. The posture of the body in the Akhirah is the exact consequence of the posture of the ego in the Dunya.

ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمْ أَشَدُّ عَلَى ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عِتِيًّا
"Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence."
Plain UnderstandingThen, from every single group and faction of disbelievers, We will violently pull out the leaders—the ones who were the most intensely arrogant and rebellious against the Most Merciful God.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Divine sorting mechanism targets the architects of corruption first. "Lananzi'anna" implies a forceful extraction. Those who pioneered rebellion and influenced others to abandon the Truth will not merely share the punishment; they will be dragged forward to receive the most severe penalty first. Their worldly leadership translates directly into precedence in torment.

ثُمَّ لَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِهَا صِلِيًّا
"Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein."

Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The execution of wrath is not chaotic; it is surgically precise. "A'lamu" (most knowing) confirms that God's justice never punishes a soul arbitrarily. The fire is calibrated exactly to the degree of the soul's "awla" (worthiness/entitlement) for it, based exclusively on their deliberate choices on earth.

وَإِن مِّنكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا ۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِيًّا
"And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed."
Plain UnderstandingAn absolute, terrifying decree: Every single human being—without exception—will pass over or approach the Hellfire. This is a finalized, inescapable decision commanded by your Lord.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)This verse establishes the terrifying reality of the "Sirat"—the physical bridge extending directly over the roaring flames of Hell, which every soul must cross to reach Paradise. "Wariduha" (coming to it) does not mean the believers will burn; it means they will witness it from above. The Prophets and the righteous will cross it at the speed of lightning or wind, completely unharmed, while the disbelievers will fall into the abyss below.
The UnseenWarningAccountability
ثُمَّ نُنَجِّى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّنَذَرُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا
"Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees."
Plain UnderstandingThen, as everyone passes over, We will safely rescue and deliver those who lived with God-consciousness and avoided sin. But We will abandon the oppressive, arrogant people, letting them fall in, leaving them stranded on their knees in the Fire.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The safety of the crossing is entirely dependent on "Taqwa" (protective consciousness). The bridge over Hell is merely a manifestation of the bridge of Islamic Law (Shari'ah) in the Dunya. If a servant walked the straight, narrow path of obedience on earth without slipping into sin, their feet will walk the straight, narrow bridge over the Fire without slipping. You build your speed across the Sirat through your daily actions right now.

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٍ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَىُّ ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ خَيْرٌ مَّقَامًا وَأَحْسَنُ نَدِيًّا
"And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, 'Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?'"
Plain UnderstandingWhenever God's clear revelations are read to them, the wealthy disbelievers mock the poor believers, saying: "Look at us! Which of our two groups has better houses, more wealth, and sits in higher-class social gatherings? If your religion was true, wouldn't you be the rich ones?"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Quraish elite (like Abu Jahl) measured theological validity entirely by socio-economic metrics. Because the early followers of the Prophet ﷺ were largely impoverished or enslaved (like Bilal and Ammar), the elite weaponized their own wealth ("Khayrun maqaman" - best in position) as proof of Divine favor. They conflated earthly luxury with spiritual accuracy.

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَحْسَنُ أَثَٰثًا وَرِءْيًا
"And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?"
Plain UnderstandingGod crushes their materialistic argument: "How many massive civilizations have We completely destroyed before them, who had vastly superior wealth, furniture, and physical beauty?"

The ruins of ancient palaces prove that God frequently bestows material beauty ("Ri'ya") upon those He intends to ultimately destroy due to their rebellion. To use the accumulation of furniture ("Athathan") as a shield against the wrath of the Creator is an act of supreme intellectual folly.

قُلْ مَن كَانَ فِى ٱلضَّلَٰلَةِ فَلْيَمْدُدْ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ مَدًّا ۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ إِمَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ وَإِمَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ شَرٌّ مَّكَانًا وَأَضْعَفُ جُندًا
"Say, 'Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers.'"
Plain UnderstandingTell them: "For those who actively choose misguidance, the Most Merciful God actually prolongs their lives and gives them more wealth to let them sink deeper into delusion. This continues until the promised disaster strikes them—either punishment in this life or the Day of Judgment. At that exact moment, they will finally realize who actually has the worst position and the weakest army."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)This is the terrifying law of "Istidraj" (gradual ruin). When a soul loves its error, God does not force it to obey; He provides it with the rope to hang itself. The "extension" of wealth and time is often a terminal spiritual disease disguised as a blessing. The ego believes it is winning the war, unaware that its supply lines are being actively managed by the very King it is rebelling against.

وَيَزِيدُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱهْتَدَوْا۟ هُدًى ۗ وَٱلْبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ مَّرَدًّا
"And Allah increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] destination."
Plain UnderstandingConversely, for those who choose the right path, God continuously increases them in light and guidance. And the good deeds that last forever are infinitely better in the sight of your Lord for earning a reward, and lead to a much better final destination than any earthly wealth.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Al-Baqiyat As-Salihat" (the enduring good deeds). The elite boasted of their transient wealth; God redirects the intellect to that which survives the grave. A single utterance of "SubhanAllah" (Glory to God) holds more permanent cosmic capital than the entire real estate of Mecca. God increases the guided precisely because they invest in the currency of eternity, not the decaying assets of the Dunya.
Spiritual PracticeHopeWealth
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى كَفَرَ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَقَالَ لَأُوتَيَنَّ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا
"Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, 'I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]?'"
Plain UnderstandingHave you seen the utter arrogance of the one who rejects Our revelations, yet mockingly boasts: "Even if there is an afterlife, God will definitely give me vast wealth and children there too, just like He did here!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)This was revealed concerning Al-'As ibn Wa'il. The poor companion Khabbab ibn Al-Aratt came to demand a debt Al-'As owed him. Al-'As arrogantly mocked him, saying, "I won't pay you until you reject Muhammad. But wait, if you say we are going to be resurrected, just come find me in the afterlife! I'll have plenty of wealth and children there, and I'll pay you then!" The verse exposes the supreme delusion of assuming earthly privilege guarantees Heavenly salvation.

أَطَّلَعَ ٱلْغَيْبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَهْدًا
"Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?"
Plain UnderstandingGod responds to this arrogance with two sharp questions: "Has this man magically peeked into the Unseen to know his future? Or did he somehow extract a signed contract from the Most Merciful guaranteeing him this wealth?"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The ego writes checks it cannot cash. By claiming guaranteed salvation without doing the spiritual labor, the arrogant person is essentially claiming they possess the "Ghayb" (Divine unseen knowledge). The only "Ahd" (covenant) God accepts for Paradise is the covenant of Iman (faith) and Amal (righteous action), both of which this man had violently rejected.
The UnseenArroganceWarning
كَلَّا ۚ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا يَقُولُ وَنَمُدُّ لَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ مَدًّا
"No! We will record what he says and extend for him from the punishment extensively."
Plain UnderstandingAbsolutely not! We will meticulously record every arrogant word he just uttered, and instead of giving him wealth, We will relentlessly stretch out and multiply his punishment.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Kalla" (Never/No!). The Divine reprimand is swift and absolute. Words are not harmless vapor; they are concrete realities written into the eternal Register ("Sanaktubu"). Because he mockingly asked for an extension of wealth, Divine justice grants him an extension ("Namuddu") of pure, unmitigated torment. The tongue is the steering wheel of destiny.

وَنَرِثُهُۥ مَا يَقُولُ وَيَأْتِينَا فَرْدًا
"And We will inherit him [in] what he mentions, and he will come to Us alone."
Plain Understanding"And We will outlive him, stripping him of all the wealth and children he boasted about, and he will eventually stand before Us completely alone, naked, and powerless."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Farda" (alone/solitary). The ultimate stripping of the ego. In the Dunya, Al-'As relied on his tribe, his children, and his finances to shield himself from consequence. Death is the grand confiscation. The earth inherits the wealth, and the soul is dragged into the Divine Court entirely bereft of its earthly armor, forced to face the Creator "Farda" with nothing but its deeds.

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً لِّيَكُونُوا۟ لَهُمْ عِزًّا
"And they have taken besides Allah false deities that they would be for them [a source of] honor."
Plain UnderstandingThe polytheists have actively taken fake statues and idols as gods, hoping that these objects will provide them with power, protection, and high status in society.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Izza" signifies invulnerability, prestige, and honor. Idolatry is born from the ego's profound insecurity. To mask its fragility, the human heart desperately attaches itself to created things (wealth, politicians, idols), seeking to extract "Izza" from them. It is a futile attempt to draw blood from a stone.
ArroganceSinHuman Nature
كَلَّا ۚ سَيَكْفُرُونَ بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ وَيَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضِدًّا
"No! Those 'gods' will deny their worship of them and will be against them opponents [on the Day of Judgement]."
Plain UnderstandingNever! On the Day of Judgment, those very idols and entities will completely reject their worship, and they will actually turn into hostile opponents, testifying against the people who prayed to them.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The paradox of false reliance. The very object you sacrificed your eternal salvation for in the Dunya will become your primary prosecutor in the Akhirah. If you worship a tyrant, the tyrant will disown you to save himself. If you worship a statue, God will grant it speech specifically to condemn you. "Diddan" (opponents/enemies) marks the ultimate betrayal of the ego's investments.

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا ٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّا
"Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them to [evil] with [constant] incitement?"
Plain UnderstandingDo you not see how God's justice operates? Because they stubbornly chose disbelief, We unleashed the devils upon them. Now, these devils constantly agitate, push, and violently incite them to commit even more sins.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Ta'uzzuhum azza" means to violently shake, prod, or provoke. The presence of the devil is not an excuse for the disbeliever; it is a punishment. When a heart aggressively evicts the Light of God, God allows the shadows to fill the vacuum. The demonic incitement is the direct, structural consequence of severing the Divine anchor.
The UnseenWarningDivine Justice
فَلَا تَعْجَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا نَعُدُّ لَهُمْ عَدًّا
"So be not impatient over them. We only count out to them a [limited] number [of days]."
Plain UnderstandingTherefore, Prophet, do not be impatient for their punishment to arrive. Do not let their temporary power distress you. We are meticulously counting down their remaining days, breath by breath, until their exact deadline arrives.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The terrifying mathematics of mortality. "Na'uddu lahum 'adda" (We only count out to them a number). Every time a tyrant exhales, his account permanently decreases by one breath. He is not ruling; he is merely draining a strictly metered reservoir. Patience ("fa la ta'jal") is achieved by recognizing that the delay of justice is not its absence, but the ticking of an invisible, inescapable clock.
SteadfastnessDivine JusticeWarning
يَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ وَفْدًا
"On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation."
Plain UnderstandingRemember the Day when We will gather the God-conscious believers and bring them before the Most Merciful God. They will not be dragged like prisoners; they will be escorted with high honor, like a VIP royal delegation arriving to meet a King.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Wafda" refers to an honored diplomatic delegation riding upon elegant mounts, greeted with ceremony and hospitality. Because the "Muttaqeen" restricted their egos and submitted to the King in the Dunya, they are spared the terror of the Gathering. They arrive not for a trial, but for a magnificent royal reception by "Ar-Rahman."
HopeJannahAttributes of Allah
وَنَسُوقُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًا
"And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst."
Plain UnderstandingIn horrifying contrast, We will violently herd the arrogant criminals into the Hellfire, driving them like thirsty, parched cattle stampeding blindly toward a watering hole, only to find fire.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Nasuuqu" implies herding or driving cattle with whips. "Wirda" refers to animals driven to water due to intense, burning thirst. The psychological torment is exquisite: they will be herded toward Hellfire believing it to be a mirage of water to quench their fifty-thousand-year thirst, only to plunge into the blazing inferno. The ultimate deception for the masters of deception.

لَّا يَمْلِكُونَ ٱلشَّفَٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَهْدًا
"None will have [power of] intercession except he who had taken from the Most Merciful a covenant."
Plain UnderstandingOn that Day, no one will have the power to intercede or save anyone else, except those rare individuals who had previously secured a specific covenant (of pure faith and obedience) with the Most Merciful during their worldly lives.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The "Ahd" (Covenant) is the strict maintenance of Tawheed (Monotheism) and the avoidance of major sins. Shafa'ah (intercession) is not a corrupt political favor or a backdoor to bypass justice. It is an exclusive honor granted by the King only to His closest servants (Prophets, martyrs), and it can only be applied to those whose hearts already contain the foundational seed of faith.

وَقَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وَلَدًا
"And they say, 'The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son.'"
Plain UnderstandingAnd yet, despite all clear evidence, they utter the ultimate blasphemy, claiming: "The Most Merciful God has reproduced and taken a son for Himself!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)This directly addresses multiple theological deviations: the pagan Arabs who claimed the angels were the "daughters of God," the Christian assertion that Jesus is the "Son of God," and the Jewish claim regarding Ezra (Uzayr). The Qur'an isolates this specific claim as the absolute apex of theological corruption.

Reducing the infinite, boundless, self-sustaining Creator to the biological status of a parent who reproduces implies physical limitation and need. It is an intellectual assault on the very definition of God.

تَكَادُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ يَتَفَطَّرْنَ مِنْهُ وَتَنشَقُّ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَتَخِرُّ ٱلْجِبَالُ هَدًّا
"The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation"
Plain UnderstandingThis lie is so horrifying that the physical universe reacts to it: The massive skies are on the verge of tearing apart, the earth is ready to split wide open, and the towering mountains are close to crumbling down in total devastation...
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)A breathtaking theological reality. The inanimate physical universe (the skies, the earth, the mountains) possesses a deeper, truer reverence (Taqwa) for the Creator than the arrogant human ego. When the human tongue violates the Oneness of God, the sheer gravity of the blasphemy is heavy enough to fracture the structural integrity of the cosmos. The universe violently rejects the slander against its King.

أَن دَعَوْا۟ لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ وَلَدًا
"That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son."
Plain Understanding...All this cosmic violent reaction happens simply because human beings dared to attribute a child to the Most Merciful God.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The repetition solidifies the severity of the crime. Notice the recurrent use of "Ar-Rahman" (The Merciful). God is so deeply merciful that He actively restrains the mountains from crushing the blasphemers and prevents the earth from swallowing them, granting them the air to breathe even as they use that air to insult Him.
Attributes of AllahSin
وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لِلرَّحْمَٰنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا
"And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son."
Plain UnderstandingIt is fundamentally impossible, entirely illogical, and completely beneath the absolute majesty of the Most Merciful to ever need or take a son.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Ma yanbaghi" (It is not befitting/appropriate). A son is required by mortals to continue their legacy after death, to assist them in weakness, or to provide emotional comfort. The "Rahman" is the Ever-Living, the All-Powerful, and the Self-Sufficient. To project biological necessity onto the Infinite Source of existence is a catastrophic failure of theological logic.

إِن كُلُّ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّآ ءَاتِى ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ عَبْدًا
"There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant."
Plain UnderstandingTo clarify the hierarchy of existence: Every single entity in the heavens (angels) and on the earth (prophets, kings, humans) will approach the Most Merciful on Judgment Day in exactly one capacity: as a completely subjugated, humble servant. No one is His "child."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The great equalizer of the cosmos. Whether it is Gabriel, Jesus, Abraham, or Pharaoh, the ontological status of creation is universally flattened. "Abdan" (servant/slave). The highest possible rank any entity can achieve is not divinity, but the perfection of its servitude to the Divine. To be a perfect slave to God is to be perfectly free from everything else.

لَّقَدْ أَحْصَىٰهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا
"He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting."
Plain UnderstandingGod has comprehensively recorded every single one of them. He has meticulously counted them one by one. No one is lost in the crowd.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Ahsahum" (enumerated their deeds and lifespans) and "Addahum" (counted their physical numbers). On the Day of Gathering, amidst billions of human beings and angels, the ego cannot hide in the multitude. The Omniscience of God tracks the exact heartbeat and precise moral weight of every distinct individual. The crowd offers zero anonymity.
Attributes of AllahAccountabilityThe Unseen
وَكُلُّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ فَرْدًا
"And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone."
Plain UnderstandingAnd on the Day of Resurrection, every single person will walk up to stand before God entirely alone. There will be no lawyers, no family, and no tribes to back them up.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Farda" (alone/individually). The ultimate deflation of worldly power structures. You entered the world alone, and you will exit the grave alone. The CEO will not have his board of directors; the king will not have his army. The soul is stripped of all earthly titles, standing in absolute, terrifying, solitary exposure before the Majesty of the King.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وُدًّا
"Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection."
Plain UnderstandingIn contrast to the terrifying judgment of the arrogant, God makes a profoundly beautiful promise: For those who genuinely believe and back it up with good actions, the Most Merciful God will miraculously plant deep love and affection for them in the hearts of others.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Wudda" (pure, unwavering love). A stunning psychological truth: you cannot manufacture genuine love or charisma through PR campaigns or wealth. True love is a Divine decree. When a servant loves God in the hidden depths of the night, God commands Gabriel to love them, who commands the angels to love them, who then descend and physically plant "Wudd" for that servant into the hearts of the righteous on earth. Love is an entirely top-down phenomenon.

فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لِتُبَشِّرَ بِهِ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ وَتُنذِرَ بِهِۦ قَوْمًا لُّدًّا
"So, [O Muhammad], We have only made it [the Qur'an] easy in your tongue that you may give good tidings thereby to the righteous and warn thereby a hostile people."
Plain UnderstandingTherefore, O Prophet, We have deliberately made this Qur'an easy to recite upon your tongue in your own language. The purpose is dual: so you can deliver the beautiful news of Paradise to the God-conscious, and so you can deliver a stark warning to the stubbornly hostile and argumentative people.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Yassarnahu" (We made it easy). The Arabic language of the Qur'an possesses an inherent phonetic ease and rhythmic beauty that allows it to be memorized by millions, including young children who do not even speak the language. This "ease" is specifically engineered to pierce the defenses of the "Luddan" (the fiercely argumentative elite), ensuring the argument against them is established flawlessly.

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًۢا
"And how many have We destroyed before them of generations? Do you perceive of them anyone or hear from them a sound?"
Plain UnderstandingThe Surah concludes with a chilling, silent observation: "Think of how many massive, arrogant generations We wiped out before them. Look around today. Can you see a single one of them still alive? Can you even hear the slightest whisper from them?"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Rikza" means a faint, barely audible whisper or sound. The Surah ends in absolute, terrifying silence. The tyrants who once filled the earth with the deafening noise of their arrogance, their armies, and their boasts have been reduced to dust so completely that not even a faint whisper remains. It is the ultimate testament to the fragility of human power and the absolute permanence of the Divine.
