ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ
"The Hour has drawn near and the moon was split 'in two'."
Plain UnderstandingThe revelation announces that the Final Day is rapidly approaching, marked by a profound, physical miracle: the literal splitting of the moon.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The leaders of Quraysh, including Abu Jahl and Al-Walid, aggressively challenged the Prophet ﷺ, saying, "If you are truly a prophet, split the moon in half." He prayed to his Lord, and the moon distinctly split into two massive halves over Mount Hira. God granted them the exact physical proof they demanded.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The physical splitting of the moon is incredibly majestic, but it is nothing compared to the miracle of splitting a hardened, arrogant human heart so that the light of truth can finally enter it.

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)They desperately tried to rationalize the miracle by claiming Muhammad ﷺ had cast a spell on their eyes. However, when traveling caravans arrived the very next day and confirmed they too had seen the moon split from far outside the city limits, the Quraysh still arrogantly refused to submit.

Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The Prophet ﷺ was deeply, emotionally exhausted by the Quraysh's constant mockery of the miracles. This verse is a beautiful, loving intervention from the Creator, telling His beloved messenger to simply let them be, for divine justice is already guaranteed.

Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)In the Dunya, they casually strutted away from the call of the Prophets (Surah 75:33). In the Akhirah, they sprint involuntarily (Muhti'in) toward the call of the Angel. The ego that refused to walk in obedience is forced to sprint in terror.

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Sarsar" is a wind so intensely cold and fast that it makes a terrifying, high-pitched shrieking sound as it cuts through the air. The 'Aad were physical giants who boasted about their strength. God destroyed them using the invisible, weightless element of air to highlight their profound weakness.

Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)A devastating visual metaphor. The 'Aad walked tall, proud, and stiff like palm trees. But because they were spiritually hollow (dead inside), the wind of justice easily uprooted them. An ego without faith has no roots in the earth; it collapses at the first strike of Divine decree.

"On the Day they will be dragged into the Fire on their faces, 'they will be told,' 'Taste the touch of Hell!'"
Plain UnderstandingThe elite who strutted with immense pride in Makkah will face the ultimate physical humiliation, being violently dragged by their faces into the flames.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The face is the focal point of human pride. When the ego refuses to lower the face to the earth in humble prostration (Sujud) to God, divine justice responds by forcibly dragging that very face through the dust and fire of Hell.

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍۢ
"Indeed, We have created everything, perfectly preordained."
Plain UnderstandingA majestic, comforting declaration that absolutely nothing in the universe is random; every atom, joy, and sorrow was meticulously designed and perfectly timed by the Creator.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Rest your heart from the exhaustion of trying to manage your own affairs. What He has preordained for you will not pass you by, and what is not for you will never reach you." True peace is found in surrendering to His perfect measure (Qadar).

"Our command is but a single word, done in the blink of an eye."
Plain UnderstandingWhen God decides to create, destroy, or resurrect, He does not require time or effort. It requires only one commanding word ("Be"), executed faster than a human can blink.

"We have already destroyed the likes of you. So will any 'of you' be mindful?"
Plain UnderstandingThe Creator bluntly reminds them one final time that countless generations who shared their exact mindset have already been wiped out. Will anyone finally wake up and learn the lesson?
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)Nothing is lost to the void. The wind blew away the bodies of 'Aad, but the wind did not blow away their ledger. Every smile, every tear caused, every penny stolen is immortalized in ink. You are the author of your own eternal biography.

"Everything they have done is 'listed' in 'their' records."
Plain UnderstandingThey are not just destroyed and forgotten. Every single act of cruelty, every mockery, and every sin was perfectly logged in the divine scrolls.

Plain UnderstandingNothing is overlooked. From the most massive crimes to the tiniest, passing thought of arrogance, everything is precisely and permanently inscribed.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Ghazali)"Do not look at the smallness of the sin; look at the greatness of the One you are sinning against." The record captures not just the action, but the weight of the disobedience against the King.

"at the Seat of Honor in the presence of the Most Powerful Sovereign."
Plain UnderstandingThe Surah concludes with the ultimate, breathtaking reward: they are not just given a garden; they are granted an honorable, eternal seat in the direct, intimate presence of the Supreme King of the universe.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The Makkan elite used their wealth to secure "seats of honor" in the worldly assemblies (Dar al-Nadwa) to mock the Prophet ﷺ. God promises the abused, poor Sahaba that their patience will earn them the ultimate 'Ma'qad Sidq' (Seat of Truth)—an eternal place of honor directly beside the Throne of the Almighty.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"The true lovers of God do not worship Him to gain the rivers of Paradise; they worship Him to gain the presence of the Owner of Paradise." The ultimate heaven is not a place; it is proximity to the Beloved.
