صٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ذِى ٱلذِّكْرِ
"Ṣãd. By the Quran, full of reminders!"
Plain UnderstandingThe revelation opens with the mysterious letter 'Sad', followed by a majestic oath swearing by the Quran itself, which is described as being overflowing with profound reminders.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The Quran is called "Dhi Ad-Dhikr" (Possessing Reminder) because it does not introduce alien concepts to the soul; it simply violently shakes the dust off the original, pure nature (Fitrah) you were born with, reminding you of the Covenant you made with God before you even entered the Dunya.

بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى عِزَّةٍۢ وَشِقَاقٍۢ
"˹This is the truth,˺ yet the disbelievers are ˹entrenched˺ in arrogance and opposition."
Plain UnderstandingDespite the brilliant clarity of the message, the elite reject it because they are deeply infected by a false sense of superiority (Izzah) and a violent desire to oppose (Shiqaq).
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The chiefts of Quraysh visited Abu Talib on his deathbed, demanding he stop his nephew Muhammad ﷺ from preaching. They were entirely unwilling to debate the actual theology; their opposition was based purely on tribal pride and the terror of losing their socio-economic dominance in Makkah.
ArroganceHuman Nature
كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍۢ فَنَادَوا۟ وَّلَاتَ حِينَ مَنَاصٍۢ
"˹Imagine˺ how many peoples We destroyed before them, and they cried out when it was too late to escape."
Plain UnderstandingGod shatters their false pride by reminding them of vastly stronger ancient empires that were destroyed. When the punishment finally arrived, they screamed for a way out, but the doors of escape were permanently sealed.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Repentance in the time of safety is a key that opens every door; repentance when the punishment arrives is a key trying to open a door that has already been walled shut."
Historical WarningArroganceJustice
وَعَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا سَـٰحِرٌۭ كَذَّابٌ
"Now, the pagans are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, “This is a magician, a total liar!"
Plain UnderstandingThey are genuinely shocked and insulted that God chose a normal human from their own city to deliver the message, resorting to petty name-calling to discredit him.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The Quraysh had known Muhammad ﷺ for 40 years as "Al-Amin" (The Trustworthy). They only began calling him a "liar" and "magician" when his message threatened their idols. The insults were a desperate defense mechanism to prevent the masses from listening to his beautiful recitation.
Prophetic HistorySlanderArrogance
أَجَعَلَ ٱلْءَالِهَةَ إِلَـٰهًۭا وَٰحِدًا ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عُجَابٌۭ
"Has he reduced ˹all˺ the gods to One God? Indeed, this is something totally astonishing.”"
Plain UnderstandingTheir ultimate shock is theological: they cannot fathom how the 360 idols surrounding the Kaaba could possibly be replaced by the worship of a single, unseen Creator.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)A scattered mind desires scattered gods. The pagans loved polytheism because it allowed them to compartmentalize their lives—one god for war, one for wealth. Tawheed (Absolute Oneness) is terrifying to the ego because it demands that every single aspect of your life—public and private—be surrendered to One Supreme Authority.
TruthArrogance
وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِنْهُمْ أَنِ ٱمْشُوا۟ وَٱصْبِرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌۭ يُرَادُ
"The chiefs among them went forth saying, “Carry on, and stand firm in devotion to your gods. Certainly this is just a scheme ˹for power˺."
Plain UnderstandingThe elite leaders actively walked away from the debate, commanding their followers to blindly cling to their idols, falsely claiming the Prophet ﷺ was only using religion as a political trick to gain control over them.
ArroganceSlander
مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِى ٱلْمِلَّةِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا ٱخْتِلَـٰقٌ
"We have never heard of this in the previous faith. This is nothing but a fabrication."
Plain UnderstandingThey justify their rejection by appealing to tradition, arguing that since their immediate ancestors didn't practice monotheism, the Prophet's ﷺ message must be a completely invented lie.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"The intellect that is chained to the customs of its forefathers will always view the pure light of revelation as a hostile invasion." Truth is not measured by its age or popularity, but by its origin.
Human NatureTruth
أَءُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّۢ مِّن ذِكْرِى ۖ بَل لَّمَّا يَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِ
"Has the Reminder been revealed ˹only˺ to him out of ˹all of˺ us?” In fact, they are ˹only˺ in doubt of My ˹revealed˺ Reminder. In fact, ˹they do so because˺ they have not yet tasted My punishment."
Plain UnderstandingTheir core disease is jealousy: they cannot accept that a poor orphan was chosen over the wealthy elite. God exposes them, stating their doubt is a luxury only afforded to them because they haven't yet felt the crushing reality of His justice.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)Envy (Hasad) is the disease that destroyed Satan, and it is the same disease destroying the Quraish. They could not accept that divine favor could bypass the wealthy and land on an orphan. Their doubt was not intellectual; it was entirely emotional.
EnvyWarning
أَمْ عِندَهُمْ خَزَآئِنُ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْوَهَّابِ
"Or ˹is it because˺ they possess the treasuries of the mercy of your Lord—the Almighty, the Giver ˹of all bounties˺."
Plain UnderstandingA beautiful, sarcastic question dismantling their arrogance: do these chieftains believe they own the vaults of God's mercy, giving them the right to decide who receives prophethood?
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)"God is Al-Wahhab (The Constant Giver). He does not need the permission of the creation to bestow His grace upon whom He wills. When you are jealous of another's blessing, you are actually arguing with the wisdom of the Giver."
Attributes of AllahArroganceEnvy
أَمْ لَهُم مُّلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ فَلْيَرْتَقُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَسْبَـٰبِ
"Or ˹is it because˺ the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between belongs to them? Let them then climb their way ˹to heaven, if their claim is true˺."
Plain UnderstandingGod further mocks their inflated egos: if they truly believe they control the universe, then let them build a staircase to the heavens and try to stop the revelation from coming down.
ArroganceTruth
جُندٌۭ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ
"This is just another ˹enemy˺ force bound for defeat out there."
Plain UnderstandingA profound prophecy: despite their current boasting and massive alliances, this Makkan elite is nothing more than another weak army that is absolutely destined to be crushed.
Historical Context (Sahih Bukhari)This verse was an unbelievable promise to the weak, tortured Muslims in Makkah. It was perfectly fulfilled years later at the Battle of Badr, and fully realized during the Battle of the Trench (Al-Ahzab), where the massive, united confederacy of pagan armies was miraculously broken and defeated by the winds of God.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)God strips away the illusion of their "Izzah" (pride). In the eyes of the heavens, this intimidating group of Meccan leaders is just a tiny, doomed faction. When you align your heart with God, the terrifying armies of the world shrink into insignificance.
Prophetic HistoryHopeDivine Justice
كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍۢ وَعَادٌۭ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو ٱلْأَوْتَادِ
"Before them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth˺, as did ’Âd, Pharaoh of the mighty structures,"
Plain UnderstandingTo prove the coming defeat, God lists the ancient superpowers who shared this exact same arrogant mindset, including Pharaoh, famous for his massive, deeply pegged architectural structures (pyramids).
Historical WarningArrogance
وَثَمُودُ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍۢ وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْـَٔيْكَةِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ
"Thamûd, the people of Lot, and the residents of the Forest. These were ˹all˺ enemy forces."
Plain UnderstandingThe terrifying roll call continues. These were the true, massive confederacies (Al-Ahzab) of the ancient world, infinitely stronger than the current elite of Makkah.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)These were the true superpowers of history. God is telling the Meccans: "You are a small caravan tribe. If I can effortlessly wipe out the giants of 'Aad and the empire of Pharaoh, what makes you think you will survive?"
Historical Warning
إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ
"Each rejected their messenger, so My punishment was justified."
Plain UnderstandingTheir destruction was not random; every single one of these empires actively chose to mock the divine messengers, making God's devastating punishment absolutely fair and justified.
JusticeAccountability
وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقٍۢ
"These ˹pagans˺ are awaiting nothing but a single Blast that cannot be stopped."
Plain UnderstandingThe current arrogant deniers are only separated from their own destruction by time; they are simply waiting for a single, catastrophic sonic blast that will have absolutely no pause or delay.
WarningThe Unseen
وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ
"They say ˹mockingly˺, “Our Lord! Hasten for us our share ˹of the punishment˺ before the Day of Reckoning.”"
Plain UnderstandingTheir arrogance reaches a suicidal peak: instead of reflecting, they sarcastically taunt God, daring Him to drop His punishment on them right now in the worldly life.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Ghazali)"Fools rush into the very fire the wise man spends his life trying to extinguish." The ultimate proof of a dead heart is when it uses the threat of divine justice as a punchline for a joke.
ArroganceWarning
ٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلْأَيْدِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ
"Be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say. And remember Our servant, David, the man of strength. Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺."
Plain UnderstandingGod tenderly commands the Prophet ﷺ to ignore their toxic mockery and immediately shifts the narrative to Prophet David (Dawud)—a man of immense worldly power who was beautifully defined by his constant, humble repentance.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The Quraysh boasted of their wealth and tribal strength. God introduces David (AS), who possessed an actual global empire and supernatural physical strength, yet his greatest defining trait was not his crown, but his 'Awwab' (his immediate, tearful return to God in repentance).
ComfortProphetic HistorySincerity
إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ
"We truly subjected the mountains to hymn ˹Our praises˺ along with him in the evening and after sunrise."
Plain UnderstandingDavid's worship was so profoundly beautiful and resonant that God miraculously commanded the massive, solid mountains to literally echo his glorifications every morning and evening.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Prophet Dawud was given the Zabur (Psalms) and a voice of such astonishing, melancholic beauty that when he wept and sang the praises of God, the inanimate rocks of the mountains would literally echo and harmonize with him.
Knowledge & SignsSpiritual Practice
وَٱلطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةًۭ ۖ كُلٌّۭ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌۭ
"And ˹We subjected˺ the birds, flocking together. All turned to him ˹echoing his hymns˺."
Plain UnderstandingEven the birds of the sky would pause mid-flight, gathering in massive flocks around him to join in his magnificent, melodic praise of the Creator.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"When the heart of a believer is fully in tune with the Creator, the entire creation falls into tune with the believer." David’s inner peace was so profound it literally harmonized the natural world around him.
Knowledge & SignsPrayer
وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ
"We strengthened his kingship, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment."
Plain UnderstandingGod granted him an impenetrable empire, deep divine wisdom, and the brilliant ability to deliver flawless, decisive judgments in any dispute.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Fasl al-Khitab" means decisive speech that cuts through confusion. When David acted as a judge, his verdicts were so clear and perfectly just that no one could argue. He was the ultimate warrior-king, yet profoundly humble before his Lord.
Attributes of AllahProphetic History
وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا۟ ٱلْمِحْرَابَ
"Has the story of the two plaintiffs, who scaled the ˹wall of David’s˺ sanctuary, reached you ˹O Prophet˺?"
Plain UnderstandingThe narrative introduces a sudden, shocking event: while David was isolated in his private sanctuary for worship, two mysterious men bypassed his royal guards and climbed directly over the wall.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)David (Dawud) had divided his time meticulously: one day for judging the people, one day for preaching, and one day for private worship in his Mihrab (sanctuary). On his day of isolation, these two figures scaled the wall, breaching his absolute privacy and security.
TestProphetic History
إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ دَاوُۥدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ خَصْمَانِ بَغَىٰ بَعْضُنَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَٱهْدِنَآ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ
"When they came into David’s presence, he was startled by them. They said, “Have no fear. ˹We are merely˺ two in a dispute: one of us has wronged the other. So judge between us with truth—do not go beyond ˹it˺—and guide us to the right way."
Plain UnderstandingStartled by their sudden, unnatural intrusion, David is quickly reassured by the men that they are not assassins, but simply two brothers seeking his famous legal judgment.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)Classical scholars widely hold that these two "men" were actually angels sent by God to test David. Their unnatural entry over the wall of a heavily guarded royal palace was the first sign that this was a divine intervention, not a normal human court case.
TestThe Unseen
إِنَّ هَـٰذَآ أَخِى لَهُۥ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةًۭ وَلِىَ نَعْجَةٌۭ وَٰحِدَةٌۭ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ
"This is my brother. He has ninety-nine sheep while I have ˹only˺ one. ˹Still˺ he asked me to give it up to him, overwhelming me with ˹his˺ argument.”"
Plain UnderstandingThe plaintiff presents a glaringly unfair scenario: his brother, who already owns massive wealth (99 sheep), used his superior eloquence and power to forcefully pressure him into giving up his one, single sheep.
GreedJustice
قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌۭ مَّا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّـٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًۭا وَأَنَابَ ۩
"David ˹eventually˺ ruled, “He has definitely wronged you in demanding ˹to add˺ your sheep to his. And certainly many partners wrong each other, except those who believe and do good—but how few are they!” Then David realized that We had tested him so he asked for his Lord’s forgiveness, fell down in prostration, and turned ˹to Him in repentance˺."
Plain UnderstandingDavid immediately rules in favor of the oppressed brother. However, right after passing the judgment, the profound spiritual realization hits him: this entire scenario was a mirror reflecting a subtle error in his own life. He instantly collapses into tearful prostration.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"The perfection of the Prophets is not that they never make a misstep; their perfection is the breathtaking speed at which they fall to their knees when they realize it." David didn't justify or excuse himself; the moment the mirror was held up, his ego shattered into Sujud.
HumilitySpiritual PracticeSincerity
فَغَفَرْنَا لَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍۢ
"So We forgave that for him. And he will indeed have ˹a status of˺ closeness to Us and an honourable destination!"
Plain UnderstandingGod beautifully and instantly accepts his sincere repentance. Not only is he completely forgiven, but his spiritual rank is actually elevated, guaranteeing him an incredibly honored closeness to the Creator in Paradise.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)A sin that generates deep, shattering humility and desperate repentance is spiritually vastly superior to an act of worship that generates pride and arrogance. David's moment of weakness ultimately became the vehicle that drove him closer to God.
ComfortHopeJannah
يَـٰدَاوُۥدُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَـٰكَ خَلِيفَةًۭ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌۭ شَدِيدٌۢ بِمَا نَسُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْحِسَابِ
"˹We instructed him:˺ “O David! We have surely made you an authority in the land, so judge between people with truth. And do not follow ˹your˺ desires or they will lead you astray from Allah’s Way. Surely those who go astray from Allah’s Way will suffer a severe punishment for neglecting the Day of Reckoning.”"
Plain UnderstandingGod gently counsels David: you have been given immense power on earth, so you must rule with absolute justice. Never let personal emotion or selfish desire cloud your judgment, for that is the path to ruin.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Khalifah" means a steward or vicegerent. David's kingdom was not his personal property; it was a trust loaned to him by God. The moment a leader forgets the Day of Judgment, they begin treating the people as subjects rather than trusts.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)"The most dangerous idol is not made of stone; it is the idol of 'Hawa' (personal desire) hidden inside the chest." Power without strict adherence to the truth is merely a fast track to divine punishment.
JusticeHuman NatureAccountability
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَـٰطِلًۭا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ فَوَيْلٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ
"We have not created the heavens and earth and everything in between without purpose—as the disbelievers think. So woe to the disbelievers because of the Fire!"
Plain UnderstandingThe universe is not a chaotic accident or a meaningless playground. It was built with profound purpose and divine intent. Believing life has no ultimate meaning is the exact delusion that leads to the Fire.
TruthAccountability
أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ كَٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ كَٱلْفُجَّارِ
"Or should We treat those who believe and do good like those who make mischief throughout the land? Or should We treat the righteous like the wicked?"
Plain UnderstandingA powerful logical question regarding divine justice: would it be fair for the Creator to give the exact same ending to the tyrant who destroyed the earth and the saint who healed it?
Purification of the Self (Ibn Ata'illah)"To believe there is no Day of Reckoning is to accuse the Creator of supreme injustice." The existence of Hell and Paradise is the ultimate guarantee that every tear of the oppressed and every sneer of the oppressor has been perfectly weighed.
JusticeTruthReward & Punishment
كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌۭ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ
"˹This is˺ a blessed Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that they may contemplate its verses, and people of reason may be mindful."
Plain UnderstandingThis Quran is not meant to simply be chanted without thought; it is a profoundly blessed text sent down specifically for humanity to deeply, intellectually, and emotionally reflect upon its meanings.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Ghazali)"Reading the Quran without contemplation is like walking through a breathtaking garden with your eyes closed." The blessing (Barakah) of the Book is unlocked not by the speed of the tongue, but by the breaking of the heart.
GuidanceSpiritual PracticeTruth
وَوَهَبْنَا لِدَاوُۥدَ سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚ نِعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ
"And We blessed David with Solomon—what an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺."
Plain UnderstandingThe narrative shifts to the next generation: God gifts David with a magnificent son, Prophet Solomon (Sulayman). Like his father, Solomon's greatest defining trait was not his wealth, but his constant, humble return to his Lord.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Solomon inherited the greatest kingdom on earth. Yet God does not praise him here for his wealth, his armies, or his control over the jinn. God praises him for being an "Awwab"—proving that the greatest inheritance a father can pass to a son is the spiritual reflex of humility.
Prophetic HistorySincerity
إِذْ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ ٱلصَّـٰفِنَـٰتُ ٱلْجِيَادُ
"˹Remember˺ when the well-trained, swift horses were paraded before him in the evening."
Plain UnderstandingA majestic scene from Solomon's kingship: beautiful, high-pedigree war horses, the ultimate symbol of worldly power and grace, are paraded before him for inspection.
Prophetic HistoryWealth
فَقَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَحْبَبْتُ حُبَّ ٱلْخَيْرِ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّى حَتَّىٰ تَوَارَتْ بِٱلْحِجَابِ
"He then proclaimed, “I am truly in love with ˹these˺ fine things out of remembrance for Allah,” until they went out of sight."

"He prayed, “My Lord! Forgive me, and grant me an authority that will never be matched by anyone after me. You are indeed the Giver ˹of all bounties˺.”"

Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)Just as King Solomon physically chained the rebellious devils to protect the peace of his outer kingdom, the spiritual seeker must actively chain the rebellious desires (Shayateen) of their ego to establish a kingdom of peace within their own heart.

هَـٰذَا عَطَآؤُنَا فَٱمْنُنْ أَوْ أَمْسِكْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍۢ
"˹Allah said,˺ “This is Our gift, so give or withhold ˹as you wish˺, never to be called to account.”"
Plain UnderstandingGod completely entrusts him with this massive supernatural power, granting him absolute freedom to distribute or withhold his wealth without fear of a strict divine audit.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"When the servant proves that he seeks nothing but God, God gives him everything else and says, 'Take it, for it cannot harm you anymore.'" Absolute power corrupts absolutely, unless the soul is absolutely surrendered to the Divine.

وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍۢ
"And he will indeed have ˹a status of˺ closeness to Us and an honourable destination!"

وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَآ أَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ بِنُصْبٍۢ وَعَذَابٍ
"And remember Our servant Job, when he cried out to his Lord, “Satan has afflicted me with distress and suffering.”"

ٱرْكُضْ بِرِجْلِكَ ۖ هَـٰذَا مُغْتَسَلٌۢ بَارِدٌۭ وَشَرَابٌۭ
"˹We responded,˺ “Stomp your foot: ˹now˺ here is a cool ˹and refreshing˺ spring for washing and drinking.”"
Plain UnderstandingAfter years of beautiful patience, divine relief arrives through a simple command: by striking the earth with his foot, God miraculous provides a cool, healing spring to cure him both externally and internally.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)God could have healed him in his bed without him moving a single muscle. But by commanding the sick, exhausted man to "strike the ground," God establishes the necessity of taking action (Asbab). You must make the physical effort, no matter how weak you feel, and God will supply the miracle.

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ أَهْلَهُۥ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةًۭ مِّنَّا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ
"And We gave him back his family, twice as many, as a mercy from Us and a lesson for people of reason."

"˹And We said to him,˺ “Take in your hand a bundle of grass, and strike ˹your wife˺ with it, and do not break your oath.” We truly found him patient. What an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺."

هَـٰذَا ذِكْرٌۭ ۚ وَإِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ لَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍۢ
"This is ˹all˺ a reminder. And the righteous will certainly have an honourable destination:"

"the Gardens of Eternity, whose gates will be open for them."
Plain UnderstandingTheir reward is a permanent, lush paradise whose massive, beautiful gates are flung wide open in eager, welcoming anticipation of their arrival.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The open doors symbolize ultimate hospitality and honor. In the Dunya, the believer often feels locked out, rejected, and alienated by society. In Jannah, the doors of the King's palace are left wide open waiting to welcome them home.

مُتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ وَشَرَابٍۢ
"There they will recline, calling for abundant fruit and drink."
Plain UnderstandingThey will rest on luxurious couches in absolute peace, effortlessly requesting and enjoying endless varieties of exquisite sustenance without any labor.
JannahReward & Punishment
وَعِندَهُمْ قَـٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ أَتْرَابٌ
"And with them will be maidens of modest gaze and equal age."
Plain UnderstandingThey will be accompanied by deeply devoted, perfectly matched eternal companions of a beautifully modest and youthful nature.
JannahComfort
هَـٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ
"This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning."
Plain UnderstandingThis magnificent, flawlessly perfect reality is the guaranteed, unbreakable promise from the Creator for those who sincerely prepared for the Judgment.
Divine WisdomGod's promises are not metaphors; they are absolute guarantees. The Day of Account (Hisab) is a day of unspeakable terror for the arrogant, but it is the day of the ultimate, joyous paycheck for the patient.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَرِزْقُنَا مَا لَهُۥ مِن نَّفَادٍ
"This is indeed Our provision that will never end."
Plain UnderstandingUnlike the fleeting, stressful wealth of the worldly life, this divine provision is infinite, permanent, and completely immune to depletion or decay.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)Earthly pleasure is always haunted by the anxiety of its eventual end. The supreme joy of Jannah is the absolute absence of anxiety. The blessing is beautiful, but the permanence of the blessing is the true paradise.

هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنَّ لِلطَّـٰغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَـَٔابٍۢ
"That is that. And the transgressors will certainly have the worst destination:"

جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَوْنَهَا فَبِئْسَ ٱلْمِهَادُ
"Hell, where they will burn. What an evil place to rest!"
Plain UnderstandingThey will be cast into the blazing Fire, serving as the ultimate, agonizingly wretched resting place for an unrepentant, tyrannical soul.

هَـٰذَا فَلْيَذُوقُوهُ حَمِيمٌۭ وَغَسَّاقٌۭ
"Let them then taste this: boiling water and ˹oozing˺ pus,"
Plain UnderstandingThey are forced to consume the most agonizing, repulsive sustenance—scalding fluids that perfectly mirror the spiritual toxicity they fed their own hearts on earth.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The believers are given cool, pure, satisfying rivers (v. 51). The deniers are given the exact opposite. "Hamim" is boiling, and "Ghassaq" is freezing and rotting. This mirrors their internal state in the world: burning with the fire of anger and envy, yet freezing cold toward the poor and the Truth.

وَءَاخَرُ مِن شَكْلِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجٌ
"and other torments of the same sort!"
Plain UnderstandingAnd this is merely the beginning; they will face a multitude of similarly terrifying, perfectly calibrated punishments designed to dismantle their earthly pride.
Divine WisdomSin is never isolated; it is a tangled web. Arrogance is paired with cruelty; greed is paired with lying. Because they compounded their sins in the world, God compounds their punishments in the Hereafter.
Warning
هَـٰذَا فَوْجٌۭ مُّقْتَحِمٌۭ مَّعَكُمْ ۖ لَا مَرْحَبًۢا بِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ صَالُوا۟ ٱلنَّارِ
"˹The misleaders will say to one another,˺ “Here is a crowd ˹of followers˺ being thrown in with us. They are not welcome, ˹for˺ they ˹too˺ will burn in the Fire.”"
Plain UnderstandingA bitter, hostile exchange occurs. The arrogant leaders express utter contempt and disgust as their blind followers are violently thrown into the flames alongside them.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Makkan chieftains who fiercely demanded absolute, blind loyalty from their tribesmen in the Dunya now violently reject them. The illusion of worldly brotherhood and tribal solidarity completely shatters in the heat of divine justice.
ArroganceAccountabilityDespair
قَالُوا۟ بَلْ أَنتُمْ لَا مَرْحَبًۢا بِكُمْ ۖ أَنتُمْ قَدَّمْتُمُوهُ لَنَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرَارُ
"The followers will respond, “No! You are not welcome! You brought this upon us. What an evil place for settlement!”"
Plain UnderstandingThe followers violently curse their leaders back, aggressively blaming them for misleading them and dragging them into this eternal, agonizing nightmare.
Divine WisdomThe ego's final defense mechanism is blame. Even while actively burning, the ego refuses to take responsibility, pointing the finger at the societal influencers it chose to blindly follow. But in the court of Absolute Justice, blind following is not an acceptable excuse.
DespairHuman Nature
قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا مَن قَدَّمَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا فَزِدْهُ عَذَابًۭا ضِعْفًۭا فِى ٱلنَّارِ
"Adding, “Our Lord! Whoever brought this upon us, double their punishment in the Fire.”"
Plain UnderstandingIn a state of absolute desperation and hatred, the followers beg God to inflict twice as much torture on the very leaders they used to idolize and obey.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Bonds built on the disobedience of God will transform into the most bitter, painful enmities on the Day of Truth." Do not follow a leader into the dark, for they will not be able to shield you from the fire they walked you into.
JusticeAccountability
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا لَنَا لَا نَرَىٰ رِجَالًۭا كُنَّا نَعُدُّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَشْرَارِ
"The tyrants will ask ˹one another˺, “But why do we not see those we considered to be lowly?"
Plain UnderstandingIn the midst of their agony, the arrogant elite look around and realize with shock that the poor, weak Muslims they mocked on earth are completely missing from the Fire.
ArroganceTruth
أَتَّخَذْنَـٰهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُ
"Were we wrong in mocking them ˹in the world˺? Or do our eyes ˹just˺ fail to see them ˹in the Fire˺?”"
Plain UnderstandingDesperate confusion overtakes them: did we make a catastrophic mistake by laughing at them, or are they just hidden somewhere in this torment?
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The ultimate, psychological humiliation for the arrogant tyrant is realizing that the slaves, orphans, and beggars they brutally stepped on in the Dunya are currently reclining on thrones in Paradise, while they themselves are burning in the pit. The scales of God are perfect.

إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقٌّۭ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ ٱلنَّارِ
"This dispute between the residents of the Fire will certainly come to pass."
Plain UnderstandingGod confirms with absolute certainty that this pathetic, agonizing, and highly specific infighting among the arrogant leaders and their blind followers will unavoidably occur.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)Hell is the destination of discord. God shows you this argument so you can avoid the people who argue against the Truth today. If you join their alliance in the Dunya, you will join their bitter screaming match in the Akhirah.

God commands him to strip away their false expectations: he is not a demigod or a magician, but a human being carrying the greatest truth in existence.

"Say, “This ˹Quran˺ is momentous news,"

أَنتُمْ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضُونَ
"from which you ˹pagans˺ are turning away.”"
Plain UnderstandingTragically, instead of embracing this magnificent, life-saving news, the arrogant elite deliberately and aggressively turn their backs on it.
ArroganceWarning
مَا كَانَ لِىَ مِنْ عِلْمٍۭ بِٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰٓ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ
"˹And say,˺ “I had no knowledge of the highest assembly ˹in heaven˺ when they differed ˹concerning Adam˺."
Plain UnderstandingThe Prophet ﷺ clarifies that he could never have known the ancient, hidden events of the angelic realm and the creation of humanity without direct divine revelation.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)This is a profound logical proof of his prophethood. Muhammad ﷺ was an unlettered man (Ummi) who never read ancient scriptures or studied theology in Makkah. How could he possibly narrate the intimate, precise dialogue of the angels in heaven unless the Creator Himself was speaking to him?

إِن يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ إِلَّآ أَنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌ

إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًۭا مِّن طِينٍۢ
"˹Remember, O Prophet˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to create a human being from clay."
Plain UnderstandingThe narrative suddenly transports the reader back to the absolute beginning of time, when the Almighty announced to the angels His intent to fashion a new creation from humble dirt.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Your origin is the earth beneath the feet. Why does the clay act so arrogantly? Whenever the ego swells with pride, look at the soil, and remember your true address."

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ
"So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.”"
Plain UnderstandingGod commands the angels that the moment this humble clay is perfected and elevated by the breath of a sacred, divinely created spirit, they must immediately fall into prostration out of respect.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"The honor of the human being is not in the clay of his body, but in the divine breath that animates his soul." The angels did not bow to the dirt; they bowed to the magnificent secret of God housed within the dirt.

فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ
"So the angels prostrated all together—"
Plain UnderstandingIn flawless, absolute obedience, the entire assembly of pure, majestic angels instantly lowered themselves to the ground.
The UnseenHumility
إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ ٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
"but not Iblîs, who acted arrogantly, becoming unfaithful."
Plain UnderstandingOnly one entity violently refused the command: Iblis (Satan). His refusal was driven entirely by immense pride, turning him into the very first disbeliever.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)God connects the ancient story of Iblis directly to the modern elite of Makkah. The Makkan chieftains thought they were powerful and original in their arrogance, but God exposes them: *Your pride against Muhammad ﷺ is the exact same cursed disease of pride Iblis had against Adam. You are simply following the footsteps of the Devil.*

قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْعَالِينَ
"Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My Own Hands? Did you ˹just˺ become proud? Or have you always been arrogant?”"
Plain UnderstandingThe Creator directly challenges Satan's rebellion, demanding to know how he dared to refuse bowing to a masterpiece fashioned by the direct, loving care of the Almighty.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Created with My hands" denotes intense, personal divine care and elevation. God gave Iblis a chance to repent by asking "what prevented you?" But instead of begging for forgiveness like David (v. 24), Iblis justifies his rebellion, sealing his own eternal doom.

قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْهُ ۖ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍۢ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍۢ
"He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.”"
Plain UnderstandingIblis explicitly voices the world's very first declaration of racism and supremacy: he falsely believed his origin (smokeless fire) made him inherently superior to Adam's origin (dirt).
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The most lethal phrase in the history of creation is "Ana Khayrun Minhu" (I am better than him). The moment a human being looks at another's wealth, race, or even level of piety, and thinks "I am better," they have instantly aligned their soul with the Devil.

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌۭ
"Allah commanded, “Then get out of Paradise, for you are truly cursed."
Plain UnderstandingThe divine decree is absolute and immediate. Because of his toxic pride, Iblis is violently expelled from the pure presence of God and permanently stripped of all divine mercy.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Rajeem" means to be physically and spiritually stoned/banished. The irony is profound: Iblis refused to bow because he wanted to preserve his "high status." By trying to elevate himself above God's command, he caused his own ultimate, eternal degradation.
Divine JusticeThe Unseen
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
"And surely upon you is My condemnation until the Day of Judgment.”"
Plain UnderstandingGod permanently seals his fate, declaring that the divine curse will remain heavily upon Satan until the end of time.
Divine JusticeWarning
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
"Satan appealed, “My Lord! Then delay my end until the Day of their resurrection.”"
Plain UnderstandingInstead of repenting for his massive error like David or Job did, Iblis doubles down on his hatred, asking God for a massive extension of life solely to enact revenge on humanity.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"A long life is a blessing for the obedient, but it is the ultimate curse for the arrogant." Satan's request for eternal life in the Dunya only guaranteed his eternal suffering in the Akhirah.
ArroganceThe Unseen
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ
"Allah said, “You will be delayed"
Plain UnderstandingGod majesticly grants the cursed entity his request, allowing him the delay he sought.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)God did not grant Satan life because Satan had power; God granted it because He had already designed this worldly life as a testing ground for humanity. The Devil is merely an instrument—a permitted test—to separate the sincere believers from the hypocrites.
Attributes of AllahTest
إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ
"until the appointed Day.”"
Plain UnderstandingHowever, God clarifies that this delay is not infinite; it is strictly tied to a precisely known, appointed time when all life will be concluded.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)Iblis asked to live until Resurrection (to avoid the pain of death). God denied that specific request, granting him time only until the "Known Time" (the first blowing of the Trumpet), meaning Iblis will also taste the terrifying agony of death just like everything else.
The UnseenTruth
قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
"Satan said, “By Your Glory! I will certainly mislead them all,"
Plain UnderstandingSatan audaciously swears an oath by God's own majesty, vowing to dedicate his entire granted existence to actively deceiving and ruining the children of Adam.
ArroganceWarning
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
"except Your chosen servants among them.”"
Plain UnderstandingEven in his pure hatred, Satan is forced to admit a terrifying truth: he possesses absolutely zero power over the hearts that have been completely purified and sincerely dedicated to God.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"Sincerity (Ikhlas) is the fortress that Satan cannot penetrate." The Devil can manipulate your greed, your lust, and your anger, but he cannot touch a heart that wants absolutely nothing but the pleasure of the Lord. Become completely His, and you become completely untouchable.

قَالَ فَٱلْحَقُّ وَٱلْحَقَّ أَقُولُ
"Allah concluded, “The truth is—and I ˹only˺ say the truth—:"
Plain UnderstandingThe Creator responds with absolute, majestic authority, establishing the unbreakable cosmic rule that will govern this war between good and evil.

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكَ وَمِمَّن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
"I will surely fill up Hell with you and whoever follows you from among them, all together.”"
Plain UnderstandingGod seals the fate of the arrogant: the blazing Fire will be packed to the brim with Satan and every single human being who willingly chose to follow his path of pride.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)This loops perfectly back to the beginning of the Surah (v. 2). The Quraish are not acting independently; they are simply the latest casualties in the army of Iblis. The promise of Hell is the divine quarantine for the disease of arrogance.

Plain UnderstandingThe Surah returns to the Prophet ﷺ in Makkah, commanding him to tell the elite that he is not seeking a single coin for this message, nor is he faking his mission for status.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Ghazali)"The ultimate proof of a true spiritual guide is that he bleeds for your salvation while asking nothing for your wallet." The false leader demands to be served; the true Prophet demands only that you serve God.

Plain UnderstandingThis message is not a tribal possession or a political tool; it is a universal, healing reminder generously sent down for absolutely all of humanity.

"And you will certainly know its truth before long.”"
Plain UnderstandingThe Surah concludes with a quiet, powerful promise: very soon—whether in this life or the moment they enter the grave—the arrogant will find out that every single word of this book was the undeniable truth.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The elite mocked this delay. But within a decade, the chieftains who laughed at this verse lay dead at the Battle of Badr, and the Prophet ﷺ stood over their bodies, asking them, "Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?" The truth always outlives its mockers.
