وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ
"By the heaven and the nightly star!"
Plain UnderstandingA magnificent oath sworn by the vast, protective heavens and the brilliant celestial body that suddenly appears in the darkness of the night.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The Arabs of Makkah frequently traveled by night to avoid the lethal, scorching heat of the desert sun. They intimately understood the profound relief, awe, and precise navigational guidance provided by the sudden appearance of the night stars. Allah speaks to them using the very sky they depended upon.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ
"And what will make you realize what the nightly star is?"
Plain UnderstandingA majestic rhetorical question designed to elevate the reader's awe and draw deep attention to the profound nature of this specific star.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)Whenever Allah asks this rhetorical question ("Wa ma adraka"), it is designed to shatter human presumption. You look at the night sky and see dots of light; Allah is about to reveal that you are looking at forces of unimaginable, terrifying power.

"'It is' the star of piercing brightness."
Plain UnderstandingIt is a star whose brilliant, intense light physically and sharply pierces through the thick, suffocating black veil of the night sky.
Plain UnderstandingAnd what could possibly make you comprehend the sheer majesty of this night-knocker?
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Just as the piercing star shatters the physical darkness of the night, the light of divine revelation pierces through the thick, comfortable darkness of human ignorance and ego." When the truth arrives in the heart, it does not negotiate with darkness; it extinguishes it.

"There is no soul without a vigilant angel 'recording everything'."
Plain UnderstandingThe purpose of the heavenly oath is revealed: just as the piercing stars constantly watch over the earth at night, every single human soul has an angelic guardian actively watching, protecting, and recording its deeds.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Do not act in secret as if you are unseen. The One who created the piercing star to illuminate the physical night has placed a vigilant watcher to document the deepest secrets of your soul." You are never truly alone in the dark.

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ
"Let people then consider what they were created from!"
Plain UnderstandingTo cure the disease of arrogance and denial, the Creator commands mankind to deeply, humbly reflect on their incredibly fragile biological origins.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)When you forget your accountability, you become arrogant. The cure for arrogance is reflection. Trace the timeline of your own ego backwards until you hit the origin of your physical form. The mirror of biology shatters the illusion of supremacy.
HumilityHuman Nature
خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍۢ دَافِقٍۢ
"'They were' created from a spurting fluid,"
Plain UnderstandingEvery powerful, proud human being was originally fashioned from a simple, emitted drop of reproductive fluid.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The human being demands proof of God's power to conquer death, entirely ignoring God's power to conquer non-existence. You came from a rushing, microscopic fluid. How can the byproduct of a fluid challenge the majesty of the Eternal?

"stemming from between the backbone and the ribcage."
Plain UnderstandingThis vital fluid originates and is nourished from deep within the human anatomy, safely housed in the region between the spine and the ribs before bringing forth life.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Quraysh boasted fiercely of their noble lineage, their aristocratic blood, and their tribal strength. Allah biologically dismantles their pride, lovingly but firmly reminding them that the greatest Makkan chieftain and the poorest slave share the exact same unglamorous, microscopic origin inside the human body.

Plain UnderstandingThe logical, undeniable conclusion is drawn: the brilliant Creator who effortlessly engineered complex human life from a tiny drop of fluid can, without a doubt, effortlessly reconstruct that life after physical death.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)If He can extract life from a seemingly dead fluid in the darkness of the womb, He can extract your soul from the seemingly dead dirt in the darkness of the grave. Despair is an insult to the Creator's capability.

يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ
"on the Day all secrets will be disclosed."
Plain UnderstandingThis magnificent resurrection will occur on a terrifying Day when every hidden motive, secret sin, and concealed intention is violently brought into the open light.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Tubla" means to test, expose, and completely unravel something to see what it is actually made of. In the Dunya, courts judge the exterior (the action). On Judgment Day, Allah judges the "Sara'ir" (the deep, innermost secrets of the heart). The hypocrite whose actions looked perfect but whose heart was rotten will be completely ruined.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"Purify your secrets today, for tomorrow they will be your public garments." In the Dunya, you can easily hide your spiritual diseases—like envy, greed, and arrogance—behind beautiful clothes and eloquent words. On the Day of Judgment, the heart is turned inside out for the entire cosmos to see.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"If the secrets of the hearts were exposed in this world, people would refuse to bury each other." Be intensely grateful that Allah covers your sins today, and spend your life begging Him not to lift that cover when the secrets are audited tomorrow.

"Then one will have neither power nor 'any' helper."
Plain UnderstandingWhen those hidden realities are fully exposed, the arrogant soul will possess absolutely no personal strength to defend itself, nor will any tribe, wealth, or ally step forward to help.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Do not rely on the creation to carry your burdens, for tomorrow they will refuse to carry even their own." Your salvation is a profoundly intimate, isolated transaction between you and your Lord.

"By the sky with its recurring cycles,"
Plain UnderstandingA second beautiful oath is sworn by the sky that consistently, faithfully, and predictably returns with the life-giving cycle of rain.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Raj'" means a continuous, cyclical return. The sky sucks up moisture and faithfully returns it as rain, over and over, sustaining the earth.

Divine Wisdom (Al-Ghazali)"The sky weeping with rain and the earth cracking with green life is a constant, physical mirror of spiritual revival." When the sky of your soul weeps with sincere tears of repentance, the dead, hardened earth of your heart will inevitably crack open with the beautiful fruits of faith.

Plain UnderstandingJust as the rain definitively separates the dead earth from the living, this majestic Quran is the ultimate, perfect separator between absolute truth and falsehood.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Fasl" means a blade that cuts cleanly. The Quran is not meant to be passively listened to for its rhythm; it is a surgical blade meant to cut the disease of hypocrisy out of your heart. When the Quran speaks, human debate must end.

Plain UnderstandingIt is not a casual joke, empty poetry, or a fleeting amusement; it is a profound, universe-altering reality that demands deep reverence.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The Makkan elite treated the Prophet's ﷺ recitation as a passing entertainment or a subject for arrogant mockery in their evening gatherings. Allah sternly corrects them: this message is not a game; it is the heavy, unbreakable decree of the heavens.

Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)This concluding verse provided immense, immediate psychological relief to the persecuted Sahaba in Makkah. Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ
to stop stressing over their attacks. "Ruwayda" means just a tiny bit of time. They were granted a brief, temporary respite, but the decisive victory at Badr a few years later—and the ultimate victory of Makkah, was already written and waiting for them.
