Surah At-Tahrim

The Prohibition • Madinah • 12 Verses
The Sanctity of the Home and the Independence of the Soul. Revealed in Madinah, this intimate Surah opens by peeling back the veil on the Prophet's ﷺ own household, revealing the deeply human struggles of marriage, jealousy, and boundaries. It lovingly but firmly corrects the Prophet ﷺ for limiting his own lawful joys to appease his wives. From these specific domestic tensions, the Surah expands into a monumental universal decree: the urgent command to actively protect our families from spiritual ruin. It culminates in four of the most powerful parables in the Quran, permanently establishing that spiritual agency is profoundly individual—no toxic environment can destroy a sincere heart, and no righteous environment can save an arrogant one.
Verse 1
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَآ أَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ لَكَۖ تَبۡتَغِي مَرۡضَاتَ أَزۡوَٰجِكَۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ
"O Prophet! Why do you prohibit ˹yourself˺ from what Allah has made lawful to you, seeking to please your wives? And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Plain Understanding
God gently but firmly questions the Prophet ﷺ, reminding him that the boundaries of what is lawful are strictly divine, and one should not restrict God-given permissions simply to soothe the jealousies of family members.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ would frequently spend time with his wife Zaynab and drink a honey concoction. Aisha and Hafsa, feeling jealous, agreed to tell him that they smelled a strong, unpleasant odor on him. To please them and avoid causing offense, he swore an oath never to drink the honey again, prompting God to reveal this verse to establish the supremacy of divine law over domestic pressure.

"The root of every disobedience, distraction and desire lies in being satisfied with the self".[1] When we adjust divine boundaries to seek the pleasure and approval of creation, we step into the dangerous territory of making people greater in our hearts than the reality of the Creator.

Verse 2
قَدۡ فَرَضَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ تَحِلَّةَ أَيۡمَٰنِكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ
"Allah has already ordained for you ˹believers˺ the way to absolve yourselves from your oaths. For Allah is your Guardian. And He is the All-Knowing, All-Wise."
Plain Understanding
Because God is the ultimate Guardian, He mercifully provides a legal framework to dissolve hasty oaths, ensuring no one remains trapped in a promise that restricts what is good.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The laws of Islam are not rigid chains meant to suffocate; they are a divine medicine. The expiation of oaths is a manifestation of God's profound knowledge of human fragility—He knows we speak in anger or haste, and provides a gentle off-ramp back to balance.

Verse 3
وَإِذۡ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِيُّ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضِ أَزۡوَٰجِهِۦ حَدِيثٗا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتۡ بِهِۦ وَأَظۡهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِ عَرَّفَ بَعۡضَهُۥ وَأَعۡرَضَ عَنۢ بَعۡضٖۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِۦ قَالَتۡ مَنۡ أَنۢبَأَكَ هَٰذَاۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِيَ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٱلۡخَبِيرُ
"˹Remember˺ when the Prophet had ˹once˺ confided something to one of his wives, then when she disclosed it ˹to another wife˺ and Allah made it known to him, he presented ˹to her˺ part of what was disclosed and overlooked a part. So when he informed her of it, she exclaimed, “Who told you this?” He replied, “I was informed by the All-Knowing, All-Aware.”"
Plain Understanding
The Prophet ﷺ confided a private matter to one of his wives, who broke his trust by sharing it. When God revealed this breach to him, he confronted her with magnificent grace—mentioning only part of her mistake to avoid completely humiliating her.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
Hafsa disclosed the confidential secret to Aisha. When the Prophet ﷺ confronted Hafsa, he purposefully overlooked parts of what she had said out of sheer nobility. The classical masters note that "magnanimous people never go to the extreme in obtaining their own rights," showcasing the Prophet's ﷺ profound emotional intelligence in handling marital betrayal.

Verse 4
إِن تَتُوبَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ صَغَتۡ قُلُوبُكُمَاۖ وَإِن تَظَٰهَرَا عَلَيۡهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰهُ وَجِبۡرِيلُ وَصَٰلِحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَۖ وَٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ ظَهِيرٌ
"˹It will be better˺ if you ˹wives˺ both turn to Allah in repentance, for your hearts have certainly faltered. But if you ˹continue to˺ collaborate against him, then ˹know that˺ Allah Himself is his Guardian. And Gabriel, the righteous believers, and the angels are ˹all˺ his supporters as well."
Plain Understanding
God directly addresses the two wives, urging them to sincerely repent because their hearts had drifted. If they continue to plot together, they are warned that God, the angels, and all righteous believers stand as an unbreakable shield around His Messenger.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)
"Take pity on your soul... and surrender whatever is besides... to Him who created you".[2] When the ego aligns with another ego to assert control, it enters into a war it cannot possibly win. To oppose the spiritual authority of the Prophet ﷺ is to challenge the very forces of the Unseen. The only safe harbor for a faltering heart is immediate, unconditional surrender.

Verse 5
عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبۡدِلَهُۥٓ أَزۡوَٰجًا خَيۡرٗا مِّنكُنَّ مُسۡلِمَٰتٖ مُّؤۡمِنَٰتٖ قَٰنِتَٰتٖ تَٰٓئِبَٰتٍ عَٰبِدَٰتٖ سَٰٓئِحَٰتٖ ثَيِّبَٰتٖ وَأَبۡكَارٗا
"Perhaps, if he were to divorce you ˹all˺, his Lord would replace you with better wives who are submissive ˹to Allah˺, faithful ˹to Him˺, devout, repentant, dedicated to worship and fasting—previously married or virgins."
Plain Understanding
A stark reality check: no human is irreplaceable. If their actions were to push him to divorce, God is entirely capable of replacing them with women of profound spiritual substance and devotion.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"If you want a glory that does not vanish, then do not glory in a glory that vanishes".[3] Status derived from being the Prophet's wife is contingent on adab (spiritual courtesy); if the adab is lost, the status evaporates. True nobility lies exclusively in the qualities of faith, obedience, and sincere devotion.

Verse 6
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ قُوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَأَهۡلِيكُمۡ نَارٗا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلۡحِجَارَةُ عَلَيۡهَا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٌ غِلَاظٞ شِدَادٞ لَّا يَعۡصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمۡ وَيَفۡعَلُونَ مَا يُؤۡمَرُونَ
"O believers! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, overseen by formidable and severe angels, who never disobey whatever Allah orders—always doing as commanded."
Plain Understanding
A powerful and urgent command to every believer: you are personally responsible for shielding yourself and your family from the destructive consequences of sin, which lead to an inescapable Fire guarded by uncompromising angels.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
According to Al-Tabari, protecting oneself and one's family from hell means actively educating them to obey Allah, forbidding them from evil deeds, and teaching them ethics and religious rules. It is the ultimate act of parental responsibility, far exceeding the provision of mere physical shelter.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
A parent who saves their child from a worldly fire but leaves them ignorant of the divine realities has failed entirely. The truest form of love is the painful, exhaustive effort to nurture a household upon the remembrance of God, so you may be reunited in the eternal Gardens.

Verse 7
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَا تَعۡتَذِرُواْ ٱلۡيَوۡمَۖ إِنَّمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
"˹The deniers will then be told,˺ “O disbelievers! Make no excuses this Day! You are only rewarded for what you used to do.”"
Plain Understanding
On the Day of Judgment, those who stubbornly rejected the truth will find no room for apologies or excuses; the punishment they face is merely the exact manifestation of the dark deeds they freely chose on earth.

Verse 8
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ تُوبُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوۡبَةٗ نَّصُوحًا عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمۡ أَن يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡ وَيُدۡخِلَكُمۡ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ يَوۡمَ لَا يُخۡزِي ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيَّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُۥۖ نُورُهُمۡ يَسۡعَىٰ بَيۡنَ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَبِأَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ أَتۡمِمۡ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَآۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ
"O believers! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, so your Lord may absolve you of your sins and admit you into Gardens, under which rivers flow, on the Day Allah will not disgrace the Prophet or the believers with him. Their light will shine ahead of them and on their right. They will say, “Our Lord! Perfect our light for us, and forgive us. ˹For˺ You are truly Most Capable of everything.”"
Plain Understanding
God invites the believers to an absolutely sincere, transformative repentance that washes away past mistakes. On the Final Day, the Prophet and the true believers will walk securely, illuminated by their own radiant light shining brightly before them.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
Sincere repentance (Tawbah Nasuha) implies that when you commit an error, you feel deep penitence, implore God for forgiveness remorsefully, and firmly resolve never to commit the same error again.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"If you find yourself having less hope in God when you make a mistake, then realize you are only relying on your work, not on God's Mercy". True repentance is not just abandoning the sin; it is recognizing your profound poverty and throwing yourself entirely upon the boundless generosity of the Forgiver.

Verse 9
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ جَٰهِدِ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ وَٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱغۡلُظۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡۚ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
"O Prophet! Struggle against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. Hell will be their home. What an evil destination!"
Plain Understanding
The Prophet is commanded to stand firm, resolute, and uncompromising against the active hostility of those who disbelieve and the hidden treachery of the hypocrites.

Verse 10
ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلٗا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱمۡرَأَتَ نُوحٖ وَٱمۡرَأَتَ لُوطٖۖ كَانَتَا تَحۡتَ عَبۡدَيۡنِ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا صَٰلِحَيۡنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمۡ يُغۡنِيَا عَنۡهُمَا مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيۡـٔٗا وَقِيلَ ٱدۡخُلَا ٱلنَّارَ مَعَ ٱلدَّٰخِلِينَ
"Allah sets forth an example for the disbelievers: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. Each was married to one of Our righteous servants, yet betrayed them. So their husbands were of no benefit to them against Allah whatsoever. Both were told, “Enter the Fire, along with the others!”"
Plain Understanding
God strikes a profound parable regarding the illusion of proximity: the wives of Prophets Noah and Lot lived in the very homes of ultimate guidance, yet chose disbelief. Their prestigious marriages provided absolutely zero protection from divine justice.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Proximity to the righteous cannot cure a diseased heart. You cannot rely on the piety of your parents, your spouse, or your lineage. If your own internal vessel is shattered by arrogance, even the physical presence of a Prophet cannot save you. Spiritual responsibility is inescapably individual.

Verse 11
وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلٗا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱمۡرَأَتَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِذۡ قَالَتۡ رَبِّ ٱبۡنِ لِي عِندَكَ بَيۡتٗا فِي ٱلۡجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّنِي مِن فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَعَمَلِهِۦ وَنَجِّنِي مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
"And Allah sets forth an example for the believers: the wife of Pharaoh, who prayed, “My Lord! Build me a house in Paradise near You, deliver me from Pharaoh and his ˹evil˺ doing, and save me from the wrongdoing people.”"
Plain Understanding
Conversely, God highlights the magnificent faith of Asiya, the wife of the tyrant Pharaoh. Despite living in the palace of the world's most arrogant oppressor, she preserved her heart and begged God for a home near Him in Paradise.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
Asiya, the wife of Pharaoh, endured brutal torture for her faith. As she was being tormented, God disclosed for her a veil of the Unseen, allowing her to see her house in Paradise, which alleviated her pain. She traded the wealthiest empire on earth for eternal intimacy with her Lord.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)
"Be content with straitened circumstances and steadfastly persevere therein, until the prescript of destiny expires and you are promoted to a higher and finer level".[4] Asiya represents the ultimate spiritual independence, proving that a pure soul cannot be poisoned even by the most toxic environment.

Verse 12
وَمَرۡيَمَ ٱبۡنَتَ عِمۡرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَحۡصَنَتۡ فَرۡجَهَا فَنَفَخۡنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتۡ بِكَلِمَٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡقَٰنِتِينَ
"˹There is˺ also ˹the example of˺ Mary, the daughter of ’Imrân, who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her ˹womb˺ through Our angel ˹Gabriel˺. She testified to the words of her Lord and His Scriptures, and was one of the ˹sincerely˺ devout."
Plain Understanding
Finally, God honors Maryam (Mary), who fiercely guarded her purity. God miraculously breathed His spirit into her, and she stood as a monument of absolute truthfulness and devout, unbroken obedience to her Creator.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Maryam achieved a station of perfection through her intense devotion. She emptied herself of worldly attachments, and in return, God filled her with a miraculous light. She is the eternal exemplar of chastity, spiritual focus, and the profound strength found in total submission to the Divine Will.
