يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ بَيْنَ يَدَىِ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
"O believers! Do not proceed ˹in any matter˺ before ˹a decree from˺ Allah and His Messenger. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
Plain UnderstandingDo not rush ahead of Allah and His Messenger in your words, actions, or decisions; true faith requires pausing your ego to seek divine guidance first.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)This was revealed when a disagreement arose between Abu Bakr and 'Umar in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ about who should be appointed as a commander. Allah gently corrected even His greatest companions, teaching them absolute deference to prophetic leadership and timing.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"Rest yourself from self-direction, for what Someone Else has carried out on your behalf, you must not yourself undertake to do it." True spiritual etiquette (Adab) is the total surrender of your personal will to the Divine decree, moving only when He permits.

"O believers! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you do to one another, or your deeds will become void while you are unaware."
Plain UnderstandingA command of profound respect: speaking loudly or aggressively to the Prophet is not like speaking to a regular friend; it risks completely nullifying a lifetime of good deeds without you even realizing it.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The outward lowering of the voice is a necessary physical manifestation of the inward bowing of the heart. If the ego is loud, the soul's connection to the Divine is instantly silenced.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَغُضُّونَ أَصْوَٰتَهُمْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱمْتَحَنَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ۚ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌۭ وَأَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ
"Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah’s Messenger are the ones whose hearts Allah has refined for righteousness. They will have forgiveness and a great reward."
Plain UnderstandingThose who soften their tone out of deep reverence have had their hearts successfully tested and purified by Allah, earning immense forgiveness and grace.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"The root of every disobedience, distraction and desire lies in being satisfied with the self". Lowering the voice is the physical manifestation of spiritual poverty, recognizing one's absolute smallness before the Divine light.

"Indeed, most of those who call out to you ˹O Prophet˺ from outside ˹your˺ private quarters have no understanding ˹of manners˺."
Plain UnderstandingThose who crudely shout for your attention from outside your home lack basic understanding and emotional refinement.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The unrefined Bedouins from the Banu Tamim tribe arrived in Madinah and began shouting roughly from outside the Prophet's ﷺ private apartments ("O Muhammad, come out to us!"). Allah exposed their lack of manners to protect the emotional well-being and dignity of His Messenger, while teaching the entire community the sanctity of private boundaries.

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْرًۭا لَّهُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
"Had they been patient until you could come out to them, it would have certainly been better for them. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Plain UnderstandingTrue dignity lies in patience; waiting politely for the right time would have been far better for their souls, yet Allah remains incredibly forgiving of their ignorance.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)"Be content with straitened circumstances and steadfastly persevere therein..." Impatience is the ego demanding immediate satisfaction; patience is the soul yielding and trusting the Divine timing.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن جَآءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌۢ بِنَبَإٍۢ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ أَن تُصِيبُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بِجَهَـٰلَةٍۢ فَتُصْبِحُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَـٰدِمِينَ
"O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it˺ so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done."
Plain UnderstandingTo protect the community from devastating harm and deep regret, you are strictly commanded to rigorously investigate any shocking news brought by an unreliable source.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)This was revealed when Al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah was sent to collect charity from the Banu al-Mustaliq tribe. He became frightened, returned early, and falsely claimed they refused to pay and intended to attack. Before a counter-offensive was mistakenly launched, this verse descended to mandate verification, saving an innocent tribe and establishing a permanent journalistic standard for the Ummah.

وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ فِيكُمْ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ لَوْ يُطِيعُكُمْ فِى كَثِيرٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ لَعَنِتُّمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ ٱلْإِيمَـٰنَ وَزَيَّنَهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَكَرَّهَ إِلَيْكُمُ ٱلْكُفْرَ وَٱلْفُسُوقَ وَٱلْعِصْيَانَ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلرَّٰشِدُونَ
"And keep in mind that Allah’s Messenger is ˹still˺ in your midst. If he were to yield to you in many matters, you would surely suffer ˹the consequences˺. But Allah has endeared faith to you, making it appealing in your hearts. And He has made disbelief, rebelliousness, and disobedience detestable to you. Those are the ones rightly guided."
Plain UnderstandingRealize what a massive blessing it is to have the Prophet among you; if he followed your hasty opinions, you would suffer. Instead, Allah has beautified faith in your hearts as a pure, unearned gift.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)The ego constantly desires to dictate terms to the spiritual guide. True safety is realizing your intellect is flawed, and surrendering entirely to the divine light that makes disobedience detestable to your soul.

فَضْلًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَنِعْمَةًۭ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ
"˹This is˺ a bounty and a blessing from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."
Plain UnderstandingThis beautification of faith and hatred of sin is not from your own brilliance or effort, but is an absolute bounty and blessing from the All-Wise Creator.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Let not obedience make you joyous because it comes from you; but rather, be joyous over it because it comes from Allah to you".

وَإِن طَآئِفَتَانِ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱقْتَتَلُوا۟ فَأَصْلِحُوا۟ بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ فَإِنۢ بَغَتْ إِحْدَىٰهُمَا عَلَى ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ فَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّتِى تَبْغِى حَتَّىٰ تَفِىٓءَ إِلَىٰٓ أَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَإِن فَآءَتْ فَأَصْلِحُوا۟ بَيْنَهُمَا بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَأَقْسِطُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ
"And if two groups of believers fight each other, then make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight against the transgressing group until they ˹are willing to˺ submit to the rule of Allah. If they do so, then make peace between both ˹groups˺ in all fairness and act justly. Surely Allah loves those who uphold justice."
Plain UnderstandingConflict will occasionally happen, but it is your duty to actively mediate and establish fair, just peace. If one group aggressively oppresses the other, you must stand firmly with the oppressed until justice is restored.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)True justice requires extinguishing the flames of your own tribalism. You must love the truth more than you love your own group, acting as a divine instrument of peace in a fractured world.

إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌۭ فَأَصْلِحُوا۟ بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
"The believers are but one brotherhood, so make peace between your brothers. And be mindful of Allah so you may be shown mercy."
Plain UnderstandingYou are one spiritual family, inextricably linked together by faith. When hearts break and relationships fracture, rush to repair the bonds, so that divine mercy may descend upon you all.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The classical masters note that reconciling two fighting hearts is considered a spiritual surgery that pleases the Divine more than countless voluntary prayers. The bond of brotherhood is sacred and must be protected at all costs.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا يَسْخَرْ قَوْمٌۭ مِّن قَوْمٍ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا نِسَآءٌۭ مِّن نِّسَآءٍ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُنَّ خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهُنَّ ۖ وَلَا تَلْمِزُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَلَا تَنَابَزُوا۟ بِٱلْأَلْقَـٰبِ ۖ بِئْسَ ٱلِٱسْمُ ٱلْفُسُوقُ بَعْدَ ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ وَمَن لَّمْ يَتُبْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
"O believers! Do not let some ˹men˺ ridicule others, they may be better than them, nor let ˹some˺ women ridicule other women, they may be better than them. Do not defame one another, nor call each other by offensive nicknames. How evil it is to act rebelliously after having faith! And whoever does not repent, it is they who are the ˹true˺ wrongdoers."
Plain UnderstandingAllah explicitly outlaws bullying, mocking, and name-calling. You have absolutely no right to look down on anyone, because the person you mock might be far more beloved to Allah than you are.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"A disobedience that bequeaths humiliation and extreme need is better than an obedience that bequeaths self-infatuation and pride". The one you ridicule may have a broken, humble heart that Allah cherishes, while your arrogance destroys your own soul.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ كَثِيرًۭا مِّنَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِثْمٌۭ ۖ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا۟ وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا ۚ أَيُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَن يَأْكُلَ لَحْمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًۭا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
"O believers! Avoid many suspicions, ˹for˺ indeed, some suspicions are sinful. And do not spy, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of their dead brother? You would despise that! And fear Allah. Surely Allah is ˹the˺ Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful."
Plain UnderstandingAllah forcefully dismantles the toxicity of gossip: searching for faults and speaking ill of people behind their backs is as psychologically and spiritually repulsive as eating the rotting flesh of your own sibling.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Spying and backbiting are sequential diseases. Suspicion leads to spying, and spying provides the fuel for backbiting. Allah cuts the root of community destruction by making the mental image horrifically vivid—the victim is entirely unaware and defenseless, exactly like a corpse.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Declare your jihad on thirteen enemies you cannot see - Egoism, Arrogance, Conceit, Selfishness, Greed, Lust, Intolerance, Anger, Lying, Cheating, Gossiping and Slandering". The one who backbites is spiritually bankrupt, handing over his hard-earned good deeds on a silver platter to the one he slanders.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍۢ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ شُعُوبًۭا وَقَبَآئِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتْقَىٰكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌۭ
"O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware."
Plain UnderstandingA breathtaking, universal declaration of human equality: ethnic, racial, and tribal differences were beautifully designed for connection and mutual learning, not for supremacy. True nobility is measured entirely by one's internal moral consciousness.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)Upon the glorious conquest of Makkah, Bilal—a freed Black Abyssinian slave—climbed the holy Ka'bah to call the prayer. Some aristocratic Arabs made racist remarks, disgusted that a former slave stood on their sacred monument. Allah immediately revealed this verse to shatter racism forever, establishing piety as the only valid hierarchy.

قَالَتِ ٱلْأَعْرَابُ ءَامَنَّا ۖ قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ وَلَـٰكِن قُولُوٓا۟ أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ ٱلْإِيمَـٰنُ فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ لَا يَلِتْكُم مِّنْ أَعْمَـٰلِكُمْ شَيْـًٔا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ
"˹Some of˺ the nomadic Arabs say, “We believe.” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “You have not believed. But say, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. But if you obey Allah and His Messenger ˹wholeheartedly˺, He will not discount anything from ˹the reward of˺ your deeds. Allah is truly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”"
Plain UnderstandingAllah corrects those who confidently bragged about their faith: outward submission (Islam) is just the first step. True, unwavering faith (Iman) takes time, testing, and profound sincerity to fully penetrate and anchor the heart.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)The ego loves to claim high spiritual stations it has not yet earned. Allah gently strips away their pretension, reminding them that true *Iman* is a profound, internal illumination, not a social label you casually attach to yourself.

إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْتَابُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلصَّـٰدِقُونَ
"The ˹true˺ believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger—never doubting—and strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah. They are the ones true in faith."
Plain UnderstandingGenuine faith is defined by absolute, unshakable certainty, backed up by a beautiful willingness to sacrifice one's comfort, wealth, and very life for the sake of the Creator.

قُلْ أَتُعَلِّمُونَ ٱللَّهَ بِدِينِكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۭ
"Say, “Do you inform Allah of your faith, when Allah ˹already˺ knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth? And Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.”"
Plain UnderstandingNever fall into the arrogant trap of trying to prove your devotion to Allah. He already perfectly knows every hidden corner of the cosmos and the deepest secrets of your chest.
Attributes of AllahThe UnseenAccountability
يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا۟ ۖ قُل لَّا تَمُنُّوا۟ عَلَىَّ إِسْلَـٰمَكُم ۖ بَلِ ٱللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَىٰكُمْ لِلْإِيمَـٰنِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
"They regard their acceptance of Islam as a favour to you. Tell ˹them, O Prophet˺, “Do not regard your Islam as a favour to me. Rather, it is Allah Who has done you a favour by guiding you to the faith, if ˹indeed˺ you are faithful.”"
Plain UnderstandingDo not think your worship or your faith is a favor to Allah or His Prophet. It is the Supreme Sovereign who has done you an unimaginable favor by lifting you out of darkness and guiding you to the light.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"How can you seek compensation for an action that Allah gives to you as charity?" Your very ability to believe, to pray, and to submit is a pure gift. Boasting about it is ultimate spiritual blindness.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
"Surely Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and earth. And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.”"
Plain UnderstandingThe Surah closes with a humbling, grounding reminder: the Sovereign King intimately watches every hidden intention, every whispered secret, and every action you take.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)True vigilant self-examination (Muraqabah) is living every single moment acutely aware of this divine gaze. When the heart deeply realizes it is constantly being watched by the Beloved, the desire to harm others simply melts away.
