الٓمٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
Alif-Lãm-Mĩm-Ra. These are the verses of the Book. What has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe.

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى رَفَعَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍۢ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّۭ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى ۚ يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوقِنُونَ
It is Allah Who has raised the heavens without pillars—as you can see—then established Himself on the Throne. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. He conducts the whole affair. He makes the signs clear so that you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.
Plain UnderstandingLook up at the vast, unsupported sky. The One who flawlessly sustains that infinite canopy without a single pillar is more than capable of managing the chaotic, stressful affairs of your daily life.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The polytheists constantly demanded local, personalized miracles. Here, the revelation forcefully redirects their gaze away from their handmade idols toward the grand, cosmic architecture. It asks them to witness the ultimate miracle happening above their heads every single day: a meticulously ordered universe requiring an Infinite Architect who "conducts the whole affair."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Relax from your management of affairs; whatever someone else has undertaken on your behalf, do not burden yourself with it." When you truly realize that the Master of the Throne is the One actively steering the sun, the moon, and your life's trajectory, the heavy, exhausting anxiety of trying to control your own destiny vanishes.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)Your anxieties crush you because you falsely believe you are the pillar holding up your own sky. You think your wealth, your planning, or your connections are the pillars preventing your life from collapsing. Surrender to Him, and realize He holds you up without any pillars at all.

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَدَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنْهَـٰرًۭا ۖ وَمِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ جَعَلَ فِيهَا زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ ۖ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
And He is the One Who spread out the earth and placed firm mountains and rivers upon it, and created fruits of every kind in pairs. He covers the day with night. Surely in this are signs for those who reflect.

And on the earth there are ˹different˺ neighboring tracts, gardens of grapevines, ˹various˺ crops, palm trees—some stemming from the same root, others standing alone. They are all irrigated with the same water, yet We make some taste better than others. Surely in this are signs for those who understand.

وَإِن تَعْجَبْ فَعَجَبٌۭ قَوْلُهُمْ أَءِذَا كُنَّا تُرَٰبًا أَءِنَّا لَفِى خَلْقٍۢ جَدِيدٍ ۗ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْأَغْلَـٰلُ فِىٓ أَعْنَاقِهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ
˹Now,˺ if anything should amaze you ˹O Prophet˺, then it is their question: “When we are reduced to dust, will we really be raised as a new creation?” It is they who have disbelieved in their Lord. It is they who will have shackles around their necks. And it is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.

If you look at the dust of your past mistakes and wonder, "Can any good ever come from me again?" remember that you worship the Lord of the New Creation. He can breathe beautiful life into your darkest ruins.

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ to hasten the torment rather than grace, though there have ˹already˺ been ˹many˺ torments before them. Surely your Lord is full of forgiveness for people, despite their wrongdoing, and your Lord is truly severe in punishment.

For each one there are successive angels before and behind, protecting them by Allah’s command. Indeed, Allah would never change a people’s state ˹of favor˺ until they change their own state ˹of faith˺. And if it is Allah’s Will to torment a people, it can never be averted, nor can they find a protector other than Him.

It could ignite fires that destroyed their meager camps and livestock, but it was also the absolute precursor to the heavy, rain-filled clouds that would sustain their lives for another year. Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Hope goes hand in hand with deeds; otherwise, it is just wishful thinking." The thunder glorifies His praises, as do the angels in awe of Him. He sends thunderbolts, striking with them whoever He wills. Yet they dispute about Allah. And He is tremendous in might.
Plain UnderstandingEven the most terrifying, chaotic sounds in nature are actually part of a perfect, obedient symphony praising the Creator, while arrogant human beings use their borrowed breath to argue about His existence.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The name of the Surah (Ar-Ra'd) is derived from this magnificent verse. When the Prophet ﷺ heard thunder, he would stop speaking and say, "Glory be to Him whom the thunder glorifies with His praise." This profoundly shifted the Arab worldview, transforming thunder from a random, terrifying natural phenomenon into a conscious act of divine worship.

لَهُۥ دَعْوَةُ ٱلْحَقِّ ۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا يَسْتَجِيبُونَ لَهُم بِشَىْءٍ إِلَّا كَبَـٰسِطِ كَفَّيْهِ إِلَى ٱلْمَآءِ لِيَبْلُغَ فَاهُ وَمَا هُوَ بِبَـٰلِغِهِۦ ۚ وَمَا دُعَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ إِلَّا فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۢ
Calling upon Him ˹alone˺ is the truth. But those ˹idols˺ the pagans invoke besides Him ˹can˺ never respond to them in any way. ˹It is˺ just like someone who stretches out their hands to water, ˹asking it˺ to reach their mouths, but it can never do so. The calls of the disbelievers are only in vain.
Plain UnderstandingPlacing your ultimate hope in money, status, or people is like standing on the edge of a river and begging the water to jump into your mouth; it is a desperate, frustrating illusion that will leave you eternally thirsty.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)This is one of the most vivid and empathetic parables in the Quran. The idolaters would call upon stone and wood during times of intense drought. The Quran paints a pathetic, heartbreaking picture of a thirsty man gesturing to a well from afar, expecting the water to magically defy its nature and leap into his hands. وَلِلَّهِ يَسْجُدُ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ طَوْعًۭا وَكَرْهًۭا وَظِلَـٰلُهُم بِٱلْغُدُوِّ وَٱلْـَٔاصَالِ ۩
To Allah ˹alone˺ bow down ˹in submission˺ all those in the heavens and the earth—willingly or unwillingly—as do their shadows, morning and evening.

the Gardens of Eternity, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, ˹saying,˺ “Peace be upon you for your perseverance. How excellent is the ultimate abode!”

Plain UnderstandingIn a chaotic, exhausting world that constantly drains your energy, the human heart will remain restless, anxious, and starved until it finally rests in the quiet, intimate remembrance of its Creator.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)This is the ultimate divine remedy for the existential anxiety of the early believers who were facing intense torture and social boycotts. While the disbelievers desperately sought comfort in wealth and idols—which only increased their anxiety—the believers were given an unshakeable, invisible fortress inside their own chests: *Dhikr* (remembrance).
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)Your heart is a sacred vessel created specifically to hold the Divine presence. If you try to fill it with the love of money, people, or status, it will continuously and violently reject them, leaving you hollow and anxious. It only finds *Ittminan* (absolute tranquility) when it is filled with the exact light it was built for.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Do not abandon the Invocation (Dhikr) because you do not feel the presence of God in it. For your forgetfulness of the Invocation of Him is worse than your forgetfulness in the Invocation of Him." A rider could travel in its shade for a hundred years without crossing it. It is the ultimate resting place for the believer after the exhausting, scorching heat of the worldly life.

And so We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ to a community, like ˹We did with˺ earlier communities, so that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you. Yet they deny the Most Compassionate. Say, “He is my Lord! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. In Him I put my trust, and to Him I turn ˹in repentance˺.”
Plain UnderstandingEven when the world cruelly rejects you and denies the overwhelming mercy of the Creator, your only job is to stand firm, trust in Him entirely, and continuously turn your wounded heart back to His loving embrace.

If there were a recitation that could cause mountains to move, or the earth to split, or the dead to speak, ˹it would have been this Quran˺. But all matters are by Allah’s Will. Have the believers not yet realized that had Allah willed, He could have guided all of humanity? And disasters will continue to afflict the disbelievers or strike close to their homes for their misdeeds, until Allah’s promise comes to pass. Surely Allah never fails in His promise.

Faith must remain a loving, voluntary choice of the free heart.

Is ˹there any equal to˺ the Vigilant One Who knows what every soul commits? Yet the pagans have associated others with Allah ˹in worship˺. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Name them! Or do you ˹mean to˺ inform Him of something He does not know on the earth? Or are these ˹gods˺ just empty words?” In fact, the disbelievers’ falsehood has been made so appealing to them that they have been turned away from the Path. And whoever Allah leaves to stray will be left with no guide.

The description of the Paradise promised to the righteous is that under it rivers flow; eternal is its fruit as well as its shade. That is the ˹ultimate˺ outcome for the righteous. But the outcome for the disbelievers is the Fire!

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمِنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ مَن يُنكِرُ بَعْضَهُۥ ۚ قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ ٱللَّهَ وَلَآ أُشْرِكَ بِهِۦٓ ۚ إِلَيْهِ أَدْعُوا۟ وَإِلَيْهِ مَـَٔابِ
˹The believers among˺ those who were given the Scripture rejoice at what has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺, while some ˹disbelieving˺ factions deny a portion of it. Say, “I have only been commanded to worship Allah, associating none with Him ˹in worship˺. To Him I invite ˹all˺, and to Him is my return.”
Plain UnderstandingA pure, sincere heart recognizes the truth no matter where it comes from, responding with joy rather than prejudice, while a divided heart will always find an excuse to reject the light.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)When the Quran was revealed, sincere scholars from the Jewish and Christian communities—like Abdullah ibn Salam and the Christian delegation from Abyssinia—wept with immense joy, immediately recognizing the familiar, beautiful light of previous divine revelations. Conversely, the tribal factions (*Al-Ahzab*) let their political allegiances and ancestral pride blind them to the obvious truth.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"Rejoicing at what has been revealed" is the station of the true seeker. The sincere seeker does not care about the packaging of the truth or the tribe it comes from; they only thirst for the pure water. The ego, however, denies the truth the moment it threatens its worldly status.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)When the Prophet ﷺ says, "To Him is my return," it is an act of complete, beautiful surrender. Do not waste your precious energy arguing with those who are determined to misunderstand you. Simply state your beautiful truth, worship your Lord, and walk peacefully toward your inevitable return.

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ حُكْمًا عَرَبِيًّۭا ۚ وَلَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَآءَهُم بَعْدَمَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ مَا لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِىٍّۢ وَلَا وَاقٍۢ
And so We have revealed it as an authority in Arabic. And if you were to follow their desires after ˹all˺ the knowledge that has come to you, there would be none to protect or shield you from Allah.
Plain UnderstandingOnce you have tasted the sweet clarity of divine truth, abandoning it just to fit in with the confusing, shifting desires of society strips you of the only true protection you have.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Meccan elite constantly pressured the Prophet ﷺ to compromise his message to make it more palatable—offering to worship his God for a year if he worshipped their idols for a year. The revelation forcefully forbade any dilution of the truth. Divine authority (*Hukm*) is absolute; it cannot be negotiated in the marketplace of human desires.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The greatest danger to the spiritual traveler is the *Hawa* (whims and desires) of the crowd. When you compromise your spiritual integrity to seek the validation of people who are lost, you tragically sever the protective tether of your Lord.

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًۭا مِّن قَبْلِكَ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا وَذُرِّيَّةًۭ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ لِرَسُولٍ أَن يَأْتِىَ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ لِكُلِّ أَجَلٍۢ كِتَابٌۭ
We have certainly sent messengers before you ˹O Prophet˺ and blessed them with wives and offspring. It was not for any messenger to bring a sign without Allah’s permission. Every destined matter has a ˹set˺ time.
Plain UnderstandingSpiritual perfection does not require you to escape the human experience; the greatest guides walked the earth as spouses and parents, entirely surrendered to the perfect timing of God's plan.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The pagans mocked the Prophet ﷺ, saying, "What kind of heavenly messenger walks in the crowded markets, eats normal food, and marries women?" God defends His beloved by reminding them that all the great prophets of the past—Abraham, Moses, David—were deeply human, experiencing the profound joys and heartbreaking sorrows of family life.
Purification of the Self (Ibn Arabi)The spiritual path is not walked by abandoning the world, but by finding God *within* the world. To look into the eyes of your spouse or your child with deep love, patience, and responsibility is not a distraction from the Divine; it is a profound manifestation of His mercy.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"Every destined matter has a set time." Your frantic anxiety will not rush His decree, and your laziness will not delay it. The human heart only finds immense, lasting rest when it finally stops fighting the clock of the Divine.

Plain UnderstandingThe story of your life is not a rigid, unchangeable script; through the profound power of your sincere prayers, God can wash away your darkest mistakes and rewrite your destiny in His Master Record.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The early Muslims were sometimes confused when certain rulings were abrogated, or when impending disasters were miraculously averted through prayer. This monumental verse establishes that while God's ultimate knowledge (the Master Record) is flawless, He actively and lovingly responds to the choices, prayers, and tears of His servants in the immediate realm.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"He eliminates and confirms what He wills." Never look at the devastating ruins of your past mistakes and think your story is permanently ruined. A single tear of true repentance can cause the Divine Pen to completely erase a lifetime of darkness and replace it with radiant light.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)Do not despair over your persistent flaws. If He wills, He can wipe away your negative traits in an instant and firmly establish you in beautiful, unshakeable character. Your only job is to simply keep showing up at His door.

وَإِن مَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى نَعِدُهُمْ أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ وَعَلَيْنَا ٱلْحِسَابُ
Whether We show you ˹O Prophet˺ some of what We threaten them with, or cause you to die ˹before that˺, your duty is only to deliver ˹the message˺. Judgment is for Us.
