إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًۭا مُّبِينًۭا
"Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph ˹O Prophet˺"
Plain UnderstandingThe Creator opens with a majestic, absolute declaration: the difficult, painful compromise you just made is actually a magnificent, undeniable victory.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), boiling with frustration over the seemingly unfair terms of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, famously asked the Prophet ﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah, is this really a victory?" The Prophet ﷺ replied with absolute certainty, "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, it is indeed a victory!" The peace treaty halted the wars, allowing Islam to spread faster in two years than it had in the previous nineteen.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"He may open the door of obedience for you but not open the door of acceptance; and He may let you fall into a sin that becomes the very cause of your arrival to Him." Allah's definition of "opening" (Fath) rarely matches the ego's definition. What looks like a locked door to the mind is often the greatest opening for the soul.

"so that Allah may forgive you for your past and future shortcomings, perfect His favor upon you, guide you along the Straight Path,"
Plain UnderstandingThe profound purpose of this triumph is revealed: to grant the Prophet ﷺ an absolute, blanket forgiveness, to complete divine blessings upon him, and to ensure his continuous, flawless guidance.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)Look at the divine sequence: forgiveness is mentioned *before* the perfection of blessings. A vessel must first be emptied and cleansed before it can be filled with the pure wine of divine favor. The Prophet's "shortcomings" were not sins of rebellion, but merely the natural limitations of the human condition, which Allah lovingly erases.

Plain UnderstandingIn the midst of their severe disappointment, Allah intervened not by changing the treaty, but by pouring a profound, cooling serenity directly into their frustrated hearts, elevating their trust in Him.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The Sahaba were seething with righteous anger. They had marched to Makkah in pilgrim garb, ready to worship or die trying, only to be turned away. Their hearts were volatile and heavy. 'Sakinah' (Serenity) was a literal, spiritual descent that instantly cooled their anger, allowing them to peacefully accept the Prophet's ﷺ decision without rebellion.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Ghazali)"Serenity (Sakinah) is not the absence of storms; it is the absolute certainty that the Captain of the ship knows the waters." Allah reminds them that He owns the armies of the heavens and earth. He did not ask them to sign a peace treaty because He lacked an army; He asked them to sign it because He possessed a wisdom they could not yet see.

Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate, eternal goal of this entire struggle is to wipe away the mistakes of the believers and welcome them into an everlasting, beautiful paradise.
Purification of the Self (Ibn Ata'illah)Notice how Allah pairs men and women equally in this supreme achievement. The spiritual path does not recognize the arbitrary hierarchies of the Dunya. The only currency accepted at the gates of these Gardens is a heart that endured its trials with beautiful patience.

Plain UnderstandingIn sharp contrast, those who stayed behind and secretly hoped the Muslims would be slaughtered are promised a terrifying ruin, fueled entirely by their deeply corrupt assumptions about the Creator.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The hypocrites in Madinah and the polytheists in Makkah firmly believed that the Prophet ﷺ and his unarmed companions were marching directly into a suicide mission at Hudaybiyyah. Their "evil thought" was the arrogant assumption that Allah would abandon His Messenger to be annihilated.

Plain UnderstandingThe beautiful response required from the believers is clear: deep faith, fiercely protecting and deeply respecting the Prophet ﷺ, and constantly praising the Creator at the edges of the day.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)Respect for the Messenger (Tuwaqqiruh) is not a separate path from the worship of Allah; it is the very door through which you enter the courtyard of the King. You cannot claim to love the Sender while disrespecting the one He sent.

Plain UnderstandingA breathtaking moment of divine intimacy: when the believers placed their hands in the Prophet's ﷺ hand to swear loyalty, Allah considered it a direct transaction with Himself.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)This refers to "Bay'at al-Ridwan" (The Pledge of Pleasure). While camped at Hudaybiyyah, a rumor reached the Muslims that their emissary, Uthman ibn Affan, had been executed by the Quraysh inside Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ sat under a tree, and 1,400 unarmed companions stepped forward, placing their hands on his, pledging to fight the entire city to the death to avenge Uthman. Allah was so moved by their fierce loyalty that He declared His own "Hand" was physically and spiritually validating their oath.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"He honors you by making your physical act of loyalty a direct spiritual transaction with Him." To betray the Prophet ﷺ is to betray the Creator, but to stand firmly by him is to secure an unbreakable bond with the Heavens.

Plain UnderstandingAllah exposes the hypocrisy of the desert tribes who abandoned the Prophet ﷺ, revealing that their excuses about protecting their families were just hollow lies hiding their cowardice.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The hypocrite lives in the exhausting anxiety of managing public perception, believing they can outsmart Allah with an eloquent tongue. But Allah looks directly at the heart. You cannot use the blessings Allah gave you (wealth and family) as an excuse to avoid serving the Giver.

Plain UnderstandingThe hypocrites who cowardly abandoned you when there was danger will eagerly beg to join you when worldly wealth is guaranteed, trying to hijack the divine reward reserved for the sincere.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)When the Muslims returned from Hudaybiyyah, Allah promised them the rich spoils of the upcoming expedition to Khaybar as an exclusive reward for the 1,400 who had taken the courageous pledge under the tree. The hypocrites, smelling easy money, begged to come. Allah explicitly ordered the Prophet ﷺ to bar them, protecting the sacred reward of the loyal believers.

Plain UnderstandingDespite their betrayal, the Creator offers a path of redemption: they will be called to prove their sincerity against a truly terrifying enemy. Obedience will bring beautiful forgiveness, but a second betrayal will seal their ruin.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)Allah does not shut the door of repentance entirely. The desert tribes are promised a future test—fighting massive, heavily armored superpowers like the Persians or Romans later in Islamic history. If they stand firm then, their past cowardice will be washed away.

Historical Context (Al-Tabari)This immortalizes the "Bay'at al-Ridwan" (Pledge of Pleasure). The 1,400 companions sat under an acacia tree at Hudaybiyyah, thinking they were about to be slaughtered by the Quraysh, and willingly gave their hands to the Prophet ﷺ in an oath of death. Plain UnderstandingThe Prophet's beautiful dream of performing the pilgrimage will absolutely become a reality; Allah simply delayed it for a profound, hidden wisdom, granting them this peaceful victory first.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)The entire journey to Hudaybiyyah began because the Prophet ﷺ had a dream of entering Makkah in peace, shaving their heads in worship.
