Surah Al-Munafiqun

The Hypocrites • Madinah • 11 Verses

The Anatomy of Deception. Revealed in Madinah, largely in the aftermath of the expedition to Banu al-Mustaliq, this Surah provides a piercing psychological and behavioral profile of the hypocrites (Munafiqun). It exposes their use of false oaths as a shield, their hollow eloquence, and their arrogant plots to economically starve and socially exile the sincere believers. Contrasting this treacherous attachment to worldly status, the Surah concludes by urgently reminding the true believers that their own wealth and children must not distract them from Allah, for death's deadline is absolute and unchangeable.

Verses 1-3

إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ • ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةًۭ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ • ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ

"When the hypocrites come to you ˹O Prophet˺, they say, 'We bear witness that you are certainly the Messenger of Allah'—and surely Allah knows that you are His Messenger—but Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars. They have made their ˹false˺ oaths as a shield, hindering ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah. Evil indeed is what they do! This is because they believed and then abandoned faith. Therefore, their hearts have been sealed, so they do not comprehend."

Plain Understanding

The hypocrites use grand verbal declarations of faith to hide their true intentions. They weaponize their religious oaths, using them as a protective shield to operate safely within the community while secretly sabotaging it. Because they tasted the truth and consciously rejected it for worldly gain, they have lost the spiritual capacity to understand reality.

Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)

This directly addresses the faction in Madinah led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. They realized they could not openly fight the Muslims after the Prophet's ﷺ authority was established, so they adopted a facade of Islam. Their testimony was factually true (Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger), but Allah calls them liars because their hearts entirely contradicted their tongues.

Verse 4

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا۟ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌۭ مُّسَنَّدَةٌۭ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ ٱلْعَدُوُّ فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ

"When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And when they speak, you listen to their ˹impressive˺ speech. But they are ˹just˺ like ˹worthless˺ planks of wood leaned ˹against a wall˺. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded ˹from the truth˺?"

Plain Understanding

They are masters of public relations, possessing impressive physical presence and charismatic, articulate speech. However, inwardly, they are entirely hollow and lifeless, like dead pieces of timber propped up against a wall. Their hidden guilt makes them intensely paranoid; they interpret every raised voice or sudden event as a threat to expose them.

Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)

The "propped-up timber" is a profound metaphor for a soul devoid of the sap of sincerity (Ikhlas). Wood that has been cut from its living roots can no longer bear fruit; it only looks sturdy. When the heart becomes obsessed with managing its outward image before the creation, it dies internally before the Creator, reduced to a hollow prop of the ego.

Verses 7-8

هُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ يَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَآئِنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ • يَقُولُونَ لَئِن رَّجَعْنَآ إِلَى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ ٱلْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا ٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

"They are the ones who say, “Do not spend ˹anything˺ on those ˹emigrants˺ with the Messenger of Allah so that they will break away ˹from him˺.” But to Allah ˹alone˺ belong the treasuries of the heavens and the earth, yet the hypocrites do not comprehend. They say, “If we return to Medina, the honourable will definitely expel the inferior.” But all honour and power belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know."

Plain Understanding

The hypocrites attempted to use economic sanctions to destroy the Muslim community, urging the locals to cut off financial support to the destitute immigrants so they would abandon the Prophet. They arrogantly believed that their wealth made them "honorable" and the poor believers "inferior." God corrects this delusion: He alone owns the universe's resources, and true honor is rooted in faith, not socio-economic status.

Historical Context (Al-Tabari)

During the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq, a dispute over water broke out between a Muhajir (Emigrant) and an Ansari (Helper). Abdullah ibn Ubayy exploited this, angrily telling his fellow Madinans to stop supporting the poor refugees. He swore that once they returned to Madinah, the "honorable" (meaning himself and his tribe) would drive out the "inferior" (meaning the Prophet ﷺ and the refugees). Upon their return, it was his own son, a sincere believer, who stood at the gates of Madinah with a drawn sword, refusing his father entry until he confessed that true honor belonged to God and His Messenger.

Verses 9-11

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ • وَأَنفِقُوا۟ مِن مَّا رَزَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِىَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ فَيَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوْلَآ أَخَّرْتَنِىٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ قَرِيبٍۢ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ • وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهَا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

"O believers! Do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. For whoever does so, it is they who are the ˹true˺ losers. And donate from what We have provided for you before death comes to one of you, and you cry, “My Lord! If only You delayed me for a short while, I would give in charity and be one of the righteous.” But Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do."

Plain Understanding

The Surah turns to the sincere believers, warning them not to let the very things the hypocrites obsessed over—wealth and legacy—distract them from God. It urges immediate charitable action, warning of the terrifying moment of death when the soul will desperately beg for just a little more time to do good, only to find that the divine deadline is entirely inflexible.

Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)

"Postponing good deeds until you have free time is an indication of an immature soul." The ego constantly promises that it will turn to God "tomorrow," once the children are raised or the wealth is secured. But tomorrow is an illusion. The cry of the dying soul is the realization that the only capital they ever truly possessed to transact with God was the present moment, which they squandered on fleeting attachments.
