ٱقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ وَهُمْ فِى غَفْلَةٍ مُّعْرِضُونَ
"[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness, turning away."

"With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversations, [saying], 'Is this [Prophet] anything but a human being like you? Will you then approach magic while you are looking [directly at it]?'"

"But they say, '[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles].'"

"[They were told], 'Do not flee, but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned.'"

يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يَشْفَعُونَ إِلَّا لِمَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ وَهُم مِّنْ خَشْيَتِهِۦ مُشْفِقُونَ
"He perfectly knows exactly what is before them and exactly what is behind them, and they absolutely cannot intercede except exclusively for one whom He approves, and they, from profound fear of Him, are apprehensive."

"And whoever among them should say, 'Indeed, I am a deity besides Him' - that one We would severely recompense with Hell. Exactly thus do We recompense the wrongdoers."

"And We meticulously placed within the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should physically shake with them, and We placed therein broad pathways specifically so they might be guided."

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّۭ فِى فَلَكٍۢ يَسْبَحُونَ
"And it is exclusively He who flawlessly created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] within an orbit are smoothly swimming."

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا لِبَشَرٍۢ مِّن قَبْلِكَ ٱلْخُلْدَ ۖ أَفَإِن مِّتَّ فَهُمُ ٱلْخَـٰلِدُونَ
"And We did not grant to any human being before you immortality. So if you die, would they be immortal?"

"And when those who disbelieve see you, they take you not except in mockery, [saying], 'Is this the one who mentions your gods?' While they are, at the mention of the Most Merciful, disbelievers."

The disbelievers were arrogantly demanding that God's punishment fall upon them immediately to prove the Prophet's words were true. God states that humanity's very nature is intertwined with haste. He assures them that His promises and signs will absolutely manifest at their appointed time, warning them not to rush something they will ultimately regret.

وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَـٰذَا ٱلْوَعْدُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
"And they say, 'When is this promise, if you should be truthful?'"

By continuously asking for the exact date of the Day of Judgment or the promised punishment, they attempt to cast doubt on the truthfulness of the message, relying on the delay of justice as false proof of their safety.

لَوْ يَعْلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ حِينَ لَا يَكُفُّونَ عَن وُجُوهِهِمُ ٱلنَّارَ وَلَا عَن ظُهُورِهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
"If those who disbelieved only knew the time when they will not be able to ward off the Fire from their faces or from their backs, nor will they be helped."
Plain UnderstandingGod explains that their mockery is born from ignorance. If they could truly comprehend the reality of the punishment they are rushing—a state where they will be entirely surrounded by fire with no ability to defend themselves and no external assistance—they would never ask for it to be hastened.

بَلْ تَأْتِيهِم بَغْتَةًۭ فَتَبْهَتُهُمْ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ رَدَّهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُنظَرُونَ
"Rather, it will come to them unexpectedly and bewilder them, and they will not be able to repel it, nor will they be given respite."
Plain UnderstandingThe arrival of the final Hour and God's justice will not be announced with a countdown. It will occur suddenly ("Bagh-tatan"), causing profound shock and paralysis. In that moment of absolute bewilderment, they will lack any power to push the punishment away, and no further delays or extensions will be granted to them.

وَلَقَدِ ٱسْتُهْزِئَ بِرُسُلٍۢ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَحَاقَ بِٱلَّذِينَ سَخِرُوا۟ مِنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
"And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by exactly what they used to ridicule."

The verse assures him that just as previous prophets endured mockery, the communities that mocked them were ultimately surrounded and destroyed by the very truth and punishment they had treated as a joke.

Every breath they take is permitted by the Mercy of God, yet instead of showing gratitude, they actively ignore and turn away from remembering Him.

أَمْ لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌۭ تَمْنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَا ۚ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصْحَبُونَ
"Or do they have gods to defend them besides Us? They are unable to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us."

The reality is that these idols and false authorities cannot even defend themselves from destruction, making it impossible for them to offer sanctuary or companionship against the decree of the Creator.

"But We gave luxury to these and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Do they not see that We come to the land, reducing it from its borders? Is it then they who will overcome?"

This sustained luxury created an illusion of invincibility. However, God points to the undeniable evidence of history—great empires inevitably shrink, lose their borders, and collapse over time. "And We place the scales of absolute justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountants."

The evaluation will be so flawless that no one will suffer the slightest injustice. "When he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues to which you are devoted?'"

قَالَ بَل رَّبُّكُمْ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَهُنَّ وَأَنَا۠ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ
"He said, '[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.'"
Plain UnderstandingAbraham clarifies that he is entirely serious. He immediately redirects their attention from the lifeless statues to the true Creator. He defines God by His absolute authority: the One who originated and sustains the heavens and the earth. Abraham confidently declares himself as a witness to this undeniable truth.

وَتَٱللَّهِ لَأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَـٰمَكُم بَعْدَ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ
"And [I swear] by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."
Plain UnderstandingAbraham makes a firm, private oath. Realizing that his people will not listen to logical arguments, he resolves to provide a physical demonstration of the idols' complete powerlessness. He plans to take action against the statues as soon as the community leaves the area for their festival.

فَجَعَلَهُمْ جُذَٰذًا إِلَّا كَبِيرًۭا لَّهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُونَ
"So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]."
Plain UnderstandingAbraham executes his plan. He physically strikes the idols, reducing them to broken pieces, firmly proving they cannot even defend themselves from a single human being. However, he intentionally leaves the largest idol intact. This was a deliberate strategy to force the people into a logical dilemma when they returned.

قَالُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا فَتًۭى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُۥٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ
"They said, 'We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe community members recall Abraham's previous criticisms. They identify him as a "Fata" (a youth), emphasizing his young age to dismiss his authority. They realize he is the only person in their society who had openly spoken against their religious practices.

قَالُوا۟ فَأْتُوا۟ بِهِۦ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْيُنِ ٱلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ
"They said, 'Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe leaders demand a public trial. They want to bring Abraham out in front of the entire community to make an example of him. Ironically, this public gathering is exactly what Abraham desired, as it gives him the platform to expose the falsehood of idolatry to the entire society at once.

قَالُوٓا۟ ءَأَنتَ فَعَلْتَ هَـٰذَا بِـَٔالِهَتِنَا يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ
"They said, 'Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?'"
Plain UnderstandingDuring the public interrogation, they directly accuse him. The question is straightforward, demanding a confession for the physical destruction of their sacred statues.

قَالَ بَلْ فَعَلَهُۥ كَبِيرُهُمْ هَـٰذَا فَسْـَٔلُوهُمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ يَنطِقُونَ
"He said, 'Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak.'"
Plain UnderstandingAbraham employs a precise logical argument. He points to the largest idol—which he deliberately left intact—and attributes the destruction to it, challenging the people to ask the broken statues themselves what happened. This was not a lie, but a rhetorical strategy designed to force his people to verbally admit the severe limitations of the objects they worshipped.

The pressure of tradition and the arrogance of their egos cause them to revert to their old mindset (described metaphorically as being turned upside down on their heads). In their frustration, they inadvertently confess the exact point Abraham was making: "You know very well that statues cannot talk!"

قَالَ أَفَتَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَنفَعُكُمْ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا يَضُرُّكُمْ
"He said, 'Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all, nor harm you?'"
Plain UnderstandingWith their confession secured, Abraham delivers the final conclusion. Since they have openly admitted that the statues cannot speak, move, or defend themselves, how can they logically justify worshipping them? A deity that possesses no power to provide benefit or inflict harm is entirely unworthy of devotion.

They order Abraham to be burned alive, framing his execution as an act of defending their helpless gods. Tyranny relies on force when the truth threatens its foundation.

قُلْنَا يَـٰنَارُ كُونِى بَرْدًۭا وَسَلَـٰمًا عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
"We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.'"
Plain UnderstandingGod issues a direct command to the physical elements. The laws of thermodynamics are suspended instantly. God commands the fire not just to be cool (which could freeze him), but to be a source of "safety" and peace. The very instrument intended for his destruction is miraculously transformed into a sanctuary of comfort by the Creator of physics.

وَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًۭا فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْأَخْسَرِينَ
"And they intended for him harm, but We made them the greatest losers."
Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate failure of the oppressor's plot. The community attempted to humiliate and destroy Abraham in the most public way possible. However, God reversed the outcome, establishing Abraham's undeniable victory and leaving his enemies in a state of absolute disgrace and ultimate loss.

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَلُوطًا إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلَّتِى بَارَكْنَا فِيهَا لِلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds."
Plain UnderstandingAfter surviving the fire, Abraham's mission in his homeland concludes. God safely guides him, along with his nephew Lot (Lut), to migrate to a new region—the blessed lands of the Levant (Sham/Palestine). This relocation was a divine strategy to establish a new center of monotheism that would bless humanity for generations.

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ نَافِلَةًۭ ۖ وَكُلًّۭا جَعَلْنَا صَـٰلِحِينَ
"And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous."

"And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us."

"And to Lot We gave sound judgment and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient."

Because Lot maintained his spiritual purity, God physically rescued him before executing divine justice upon the city, which had become entirely consumed by unnatural and wicked practices.

وَنُوحًا إِذْ نَادَىٰ مِن قَبْلُ فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
"And [mention] Noah, when he called [to Us] previously, so We responded to him and saved him and his family from the great affliction."
Plain UnderstandingGod briefly recalls the story of Noah. After centuries of patient preaching and facing severe hostility, Noah finally called upon God for help. The divine response was decisive. God saved Noah and his believing family from the catastrophic flood, termed here as the "great affliction."

وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمَ سَوْءٍۢ فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
"And We aided him against the people who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a people of evil, so We drowned them all together."
Plain UnderstandingGod confirms His protection over Noah against those who actively suppressed the truth. Because the society had become uniformly corrupt and hostile to the divine signs, God's justice manifested in their complete destruction through the flood.

وَدَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَ إِذْ يَحْكُمَانِ فِى ٱلْحَرْثِ إِذْ نَفَشَتْ فِيهِ غَنَمُ ٱلْقَوْمِ وَكُنَّا لِحُكْمِهِمْ شَـٰهِدِينَ
"And [mention] David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field - when the sheep of a people pastured therein at night, and We were witness to their judgment."

They were presented with a legal dispute regarding a flock of sheep that had strayed at night and destroyed a farmer's crops. Both Prophets approached the situation with a desire for justice, and God was observing their legal reasoning.

God then mentions His unique miracles given to David: the mountains and the birds were commanded to echo his beautiful recitation of the Psalms in an act of synchronized worship.

"And We taught him the making of metal coats of mail for you, to protect you from your [battle] violence. Then will you be grateful?"
Plain UnderstandingGod taught David the specific metallurgical skill of crafting chainmail armor. Prior to this, armor consisted of heavy, restrictive plates. Chainmail offered flexibility and vital protection in combat. God reminds humanity that human technological advancements are fundamentally divine provisions, intended to preserve life, which should naturally result in gratitude.

وَلِسُلَيْمَـٰنَ ٱلرِّيحَ عَاصِفَةًۭ تَجْرِى بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلَّتِى بَارَكْنَا فِيهَا ۚ وَكُنَّا بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَـٰلِمِينَ
"And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And We are ever, of all things, Knowing."
Plain UnderstandingSolomon was granted a different, extraordinary miracle. God subjugated the powerful winds to his command, allowing him and his forces to travel rapidly across vast distances to the blessed lands (the Levant). This demonstrates God's absolute capability to alter the natural laws of physics to aid His Prophets.

وَمِنَ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ مَن يَغُوصُونَ لَهُۥ وَيَعْمَلُونَ عَمَلًۭا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَكُنَّا لَهُمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ
"And of the devils were those who dived for him and did work other than that. And We were of them a guardian."
Plain UnderstandingSolomon was also granted authority over the Jinn (devils). They were compelled to perform difficult labor for his kingdom, such as deep-sea diving for pearls and constructing massive architecture. God clarifies that Solomon's control over them was completely maintained and guarded by God's power, ensuring they could not rebel or cause harm.
The UnseenProvisionAttributes of Allah
وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
"And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, 'Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe profound story of Prophet Job (Ayyub). After enduring catastrophic losses of his wealth, his children, and his physical health for many years, he turns to God in prayer. His supplication is a masterpiece of prophetic etiquette: he does not complain or demand healing. He simply presents his painful state ("adversity has touched me") and appeals entirely to God's ultimate mercy.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)Job's phrasing, "adversity has touched me," is deeply humble. He minimizes his own prolonged suffering by calling it a mere "touch," and maximizes God's attribute of Mercy. True patience (Sabr) is not the absence of pain; it is experiencing the pain while maintaining an unshakeable, polite reliance upon the Creator.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِۦ مِن ضُرٍّۢ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ أَهْلَهُۥ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةًۭ مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْعَـٰبِدِينَ
"So We responded to him and removed exactly what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as a mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers."
Plain UnderstandingGod's response is swift and comprehensive. He completely restores Job's physical health. Furthermore, God replaces his lost family and doubles his blessings as a direct manifestation of divine mercy. Job's endurance is recorded permanently in the Qur'an to serve as an eternal reminder to all believers: God is entirely capable of restoring whatever hardship has taken away.

وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَإِدْرِيسَ وَذَا ٱلْكِفْلِ ۖ كُلٌّۭ مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
"And [mention] Ishmael and Idrees and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient."
Plain UnderstandingGod groups together three noble Prophets: Ishmael, Idrees, and Dhul-Kifl. While their specific trials varied, they are united under one vital defining characteristic: "Sabr" (absolute patience and steadfastness). Patience is the foundational trait required to endure the rigors of life and fulfill the commands of God.

وَأَدْخَلْنَـٰهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
"And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous."
Plain UnderstandingBecause of their profound patience and adherence to righteousness, God enveloped them completely in His mercy. This verse reinforces the principle that enduring trials with a faithful heart directly results in divine grace.

وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًۭا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِى ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
"And [mention] the man of the fish [Jonah], when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe intense story of Prophet Jonah (Yunus). Out of severe frustration with his stubborn people, he abandoned his mission prematurely without God's permission. He found himself swallowed by a massive fish, trapped in three layers of darkness: the darkness of the night, the depths of the ocean, and the belly of the fish. In this state of absolute isolation, he offers the perfect prayer of repentance. He acknowledges God's oneness, glorifies His perfection, and takes full personal accountability for his mistake.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْغَمِّ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُـۨجِى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
"So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And exactly thus do We save the believers."
Plain UnderstandingBecause Jonah sincerely repented, God commanded the fish to release him safely to the shore. God then establishes a universal, unbreakable rule for all of humanity: the rescue of Jonah was not an isolated historical event. God promises that whenever a believer calls out to Him with genuine sincerity and repentance, He will deliver them from their anxieties and distress.

وَزَكَرِيَّآ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِى فَرْدًۭا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ
"And [mention] Zechariah, when he called to his Lord, 'My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while You are the best of inheritors.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe story of Prophet Zechariah (Zakariyya). Having reached an extreme old age without a child to carry on the prophetic mission, he makes a heartfelt plea to God. He asks not to be left solitary, yet he gracefully acknowledges that even if he leaves no physical heir, God is the ultimate and everlasting Inheritor of all things.

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُۥ زَوْجَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يُسَارِعُونَ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًۭا وَرَهَبًۭا ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ لَنَا خَـٰشِعِينَ
"So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive."
Plain UnderstandingGod overrides human biology to answer his prayer. He cures his wife's barrenness and grants them a son, Prophet John (Yahya). God then outlines exactly why this family received such a miraculous response: they did not wait for hardships to pray; they proactively rushed to perform good deeds, maintaining a perfect balance of deep hope for God's mercy and respectful fear of His displeasure, remaining constantly humble.

وَٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهَا مِن رُّوحِنَا وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا وَٱبْنَهَآ ءَايَةًۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"And [mention] the one who guarded her chastity, so We blew into her [garment] through Our angel [Gabriel], and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds."
Plain UnderstandingGod honors Mary (Maryam), the mother of Jesus. Because of her intense devotion, purity, and protection of her chastity, God enacted a unique biological miracle. Through the Angel Gabriel, God commanded the conception of Jesus without a human father. Mary and her son stand as permanent, historical signs of God's limitless creative power.

إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُونِ
"Indeed, this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me."
Plain UnderstandingAfter listing all these diverse Prophets across different continents and eras, God ties them together with a unifying declaration. From Noah to Muhammad ﷺ, they do not represent competing factions. They are one single brotherhood, teaching one continuous religion (Islam/Submission), focused entirely on the exclusive worship of the One Creator.

وَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُم بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلٌّ إِلَيْنَا رَٰجِعُونَ
"But they [the people] divided their affair [of religion] among themselves. All of them will to Us return."
Plain UnderstandingDespite the unity of the prophetic message, human beings fractured the original truth into various competing sects, ideologies, and religions. God notes this division but confirms that this fragmentation is temporary. Ultimately, every individual and group will return to the Creator, where the truth will be definitively resolved.

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌۭ فَلَا كُفْرَانَ لِسَعْيِهِۦ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ كَـٰتِبُونَ
"So whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer - no denial will there be for his effort, and indeed We, of it, are recorders."
Plain UnderstandingGod provides an absolute guarantee of justice. If a person combines sincere belief with positive action, not a single ounce of their effort will be rejected, denied, or forgotten. Angels meticulously document every good deed, ensuring that the individual is fully compensated in the Hereafter.
HopeAccountabilitySpiritual Practice
وَحَرَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَـٰهَآ أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ
"And it is completely prohibited to [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will not return [to accountability]."
Plain UnderstandingGod addresses the finality of divine destruction. When a deeply corrupt society is destroyed in this world by God's decree, they are prohibited from returning to the worldly life to fix their mistakes. They are permanently locked into their fate and must proceed directly to the Resurrection for their final judgment.
WarningDivine JusticeThe Unseen
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فُتِحَتْ يَأْجُوجُ وَمَأْجُوجُ وَهُم مِّن كُلِّ حَدَبٍۢ يَنسِلُونَ
"Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, actively descend."
Plain UnderstandingA terrifying sign of the approaching end times. The barrier holding back the destructive hordes of Gog and Magog (Yajuj and Majuj) will be breached. When released, their numbers will be so massive that they will rapidly pour down from every hill and elevated terrain, spreading chaos and signaling that the Final Hour is imminent.
The UnseenWarning
وَٱقْتَرَبَ ٱلْوَعْدُ ٱلْحَقُّ فَإِذَا هِىَ شَاخِصَةٌ أَبْصَـٰرُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَا قَدْ كُنَّا فِى غَفْلَةٍۢ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا بَلْ كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ
"And the true promise has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, saying], 'O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this; rather, we were wrongdoers.'"
Plain UnderstandingWhen the reality of the Day of Judgment physically manifests, the psychological shock will be absolute. The disbelievers' eyes will be frozen open in terror. They will instantly recognize that the warnings they dismissed as myths were entirely true, confessing that their failure was due to their own deliberate negligence and injustice.
AccountabilityWarningTruth
إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنتُمْ لَهَا وَٰرِدُونَ
"Indeed, you and exactly what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it."
Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate humiliation for polytheism. The individuals who arrogantly rejected God will be cast into the Fire. Even more devastating, the very statues and false idols they devoted their lives to will be thrown into the Fire alongside them, serving merely as the fuel that burns them.

لَوْ كَانَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ءَالِهَةًۭ مَّا وَرَدُوهَا ۖ وَكُلٌّۭ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ
"Had these [idols] been [actual] gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein."
Plain UnderstandingA final, crushing logical point is made as they enter Hell. If the idols possessed any actual divine power or authority, they would have been able to defend themselves from being thrown into the fire. Their inability to resist proves their falsehood, and both the worshipper and the worshipped will remain in that state eternally.

لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌۭ وَهُمْ فِيهَا لَا يَسْمَعُونَ
"For them therein is heavy sighing, and they therein will not hear."
Plain UnderstandingThe auditory environment of Hell is described. The inhabitants will be reduced to heavy, agonizing breathing and sighing ("Zafeer"). Furthermore, the intensity of the punishment is so severe that it overwhelms their senses; they will be unable to hear anything else, effectively isolating them in their suffering.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ سَبَقَتْ لَهُم مِّنَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ عَنْهَا مُبْعَدُونَ
"Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it [Hell] kept far away."
Plain UnderstandingIn beautiful contrast, God describes the reality of the righteous. Those who lived a life of faith and positive action, earning the divine promise of the ultimate reward, will be completely shielded. They will be physically and spiritually distanced from the Fire, entirely protected from its harm.
HopeJannahMercy
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ حَسِيسَهَا ۖ وَهُمْ فِى مَا ٱشْتَهَتْ أَنفُسُهُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ
"They will not hear its [Hell's] sound, while they are, in exactly what their souls desire, abiding eternally."
Plain UnderstandingThe protection of the believers is absolute. They will not even hear the faint crackle or roaring sound of Hellfire. Instead, their environment will be one of profound peace, where every pure desire their souls formulate is instantly granted to them in an eternal state of joy.
JannahHopeProvision
لَا يَحْزُنُهُمُ ٱلْفَزَعُ ٱلْأَكْبَرُ وَتَتَلَقَّىٰهُمُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ هَـٰذَا يَوْمُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ
"The greatest terror will not grieve them, and the angels will meet them, [saying], 'This is your Day which you have been promised.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe Day of Judgment is described as "Al-Faza' Al-Akbar" (the greatest, most overwhelming terror in existence). Yet, the believers will be completely insulated from this anxiety. Instead of panic, they will be greeted by Angels acting as a welcoming committee, reassuring them that the day they worked so hard for has finally arrived.
The UnseenHopeMercy
يَوْمَ نَطْوِى ٱلسَّمَآءَ كَطَىِّ ٱلسِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ ۚ كَمَا بَدَأْنَآ أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍۢ نُّعِيدُهُۥ ۚ وَعْدًا عَلَيْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا فَـٰعِلِينَ
"The Day We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. Just as We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a binding promise upon Us. Indeed, We will do it."
Plain UnderstandingGod provides a staggering visual of the universe's end. The vast expanse of space and the heavens will be rolled up as effortlessly as a person rolls up a written scroll. God assures humanity that resurrecting the dead is not difficult; the Creator who engineered the massive complexity of the first creation from nothing can easily rebuild it. It is a guaranteed, binding promise.
Knowledge & SignsThe UnseenAttributes of Allah
وَلَقَدْ كَتَبْنَا فِى ٱلزَّبُُرِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلذِّكْرِ أَنَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ يَرِثُهَا عِبَادِىَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ
"And We have already written in the book [of Psalms] after the [previous] mention that the earth is inherited by My righteous servants."
Plain UnderstandingGod highlights a universal legal decree recorded across various scriptures, including the Psalms given to David. Despite the temporary rule of corrupt tyrants, the ultimate trajectory of history is secure. The earth, in its final and perfect state, will be inherited and governed strictly by those who maintain righteousness and justice.

إِنَّ فِى هَـٰذَا لَبَلَـٰغًۭا لِّقَوْمٍ عَـٰبِدِينَ
"Indeed, in this [Qur'an] is sufficient message for a worshipping people."
Plain UnderstandingThe Qur'an contains all the necessary instructions, historical examples, and cosmological evidence required to succeed. For a community that is sincerely dedicated to worship and obedience, this Book is completely sufficient to navigate life and achieve salvation.

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةًۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"And We have absolutely not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a profound mercy to the worlds."
Plain UnderstandingOne of the most famous and defining verses regarding the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. God clarifies the core essence of his mission. He was not sent to conquer, oppress, or accumulate wealth. The entirety of his life, his message, and the laws he transmitted were designed to be a profound source of healing, guidance, and mercy for all of humanity and existence.

قُلْ إِنَّمَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَـٰهُكُمْ إِلَـٰهٌۭ وَٰحِدٌۭ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ
"Say, 'It is only revealed to me that your god is but one God; so will you be Muslims [in submission to Him]?'"
Plain UnderstandingThe Prophet is instructed to distill his entire message into a single, straightforward truth: The Creator of the universe is One. Because there is only one authority, the logical and necessary response from human beings is to submit entirely to His will (the literal definition of being a Muslim).

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ ءَاذَنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَآءٍۢ ۖ وَإِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌ أَم بَعِيدٌۭ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ
"But if they violently turn away, then say, 'I have announced to [all of] you equally. And I absolutely do not know whether near or far is exactly that which you are promised.'"
Plain UnderstandingIf the people choose to reject the message, the Prophet's responsibility is fulfilled. He has delivered the warning clearly and equally to everyone without bias. He honestly admits that he does not possess the knowledge of the Unseen; only God knows the exact timing of when the promised judgment or punishment will occur.

إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْتُمُونَ
"Indeed, He knows what is declared of speech, and He knows exactly what you conceal."
Plain UnderstandingA reminder of God's perfect awareness. Whether the disbelievers boast loudly about their rejection or secretly harbor plots and malice in their hearts, the Creator processes all data equally. No intention or action escapes His observation.

وَإِنْ أَدْرِى لَعَلَّهُۥ فِتْنَةٌۭ لَّكُمْ وَمَتَـٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍۢ
"And I do not know; perhaps it is a profound trial for you and an enjoyment for a time."
Plain UnderstandingThe Prophet informs the elite that the delay in their punishment is not a sign of approval. It may actually be a "Fitnah" (a severe test). By allowing them to enjoy their wealth and status a little longer, God is giving them enough rope to fully demonstrate their arrogance before the inevitable conclusion arrives.

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱحْكُم بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَرَبُّنَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ
