"And ˹in˺ the alternation of the day and the night, the provision sent down from the skies by Allah—reviving the earth after its death—and the shifting of the winds, are signs for people of understanding."

"Awaiting them is Hell. Their ˹worldly˺ gains will not be of any benefit to them whatsoever, nor will those protectors they have taken besides Allah. And they will suffer a tremendous punishment."

"This ˹Quran˺ is ˹true˺ guidance. And those who deny their Lord’s revelations will suffer the ˹worst˺ torment of agonizing pain."

"˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believers to forgive those who do not fear Allah’s days ˹of torment˺, so that He will reward each group for what they used to commit."

مَنْ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًۭا فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ وَمَنْ أَسَآءَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۖ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ
"Whoever does good, it is to their own benefit. And whoever does evil, it is to their own loss. Then to your Lord you will ˹all˺ be returned."

Every act of compassion, every quiet prayer, and every misstep is an investment or a withdrawal strictly from the spiritual ledger of our own souls.

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْحُكْمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَفَضَّلْنَـٰهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"Indeed, We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood; granted them good, lawful provisions; and favored them above the others."

"We ˹also˺ gave them clear commandments regarding ˹their˺ faith. But it was not until knowledge came to them that they differed out of mutual envy. Surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment regarding their differences."

When knowledge is acquired for status or power rather than for drawing near to the Divine, it shatters brotherhood and distances the soul from the very God it claims to serve.

Knowledge must always be married to spiritual sincerity; otherwise, the very light meant to guide a community becomes the fire that burns it down. True justice for these silent heart-crimes rests purely with the Lord on the Final Day.

"Now We have set you ˹O Prophet˺ on the ˹clear˺ Way of faith. So follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know ˹the truth˺."

إِنَّهُمْ لَن يُغْنُوا۟ عَنكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًۭٔا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۢ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
"They certainly can be of no benefit to you against Allah whatsoever. Surely the wrongdoers are patrons of each other, whereas Allah is the Patron of the righteous."

"For Allah created the heavens and the earth for a purpose, so that every soul may be paid back for what it has committed. And none will be wronged."

أَفَرَءَيْتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍۢ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِهِۦ وَقَلْبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَـٰوَةًۭ فَمَن يَهْدِيهِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
"Have you seen ˹O Prophet˺ those who have taken their own desires as their god? ˹And so˺ Allah left them to stray knowingly, sealed their hearing and hearts, and placed a cover on their sight. Who then can guide them after Allah? Will you ˹all˺ not then be mindful?"

وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا يُهْلِكُنَآ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهْرُ ۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ
"And they argue, “There is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die; others are born. And nothing destroys us but ˹the passage of˺ time.” Yet they have no knowledge ˹in support˺ of this ˹claim˺. They only speculate."
Plain UnderstandingHere is the ancient argument of pure materialism: the bleak assumption that we are mere biological accidents, existing only to be erased by time. The Quran compassionately calls this out as baseless speculation born from a fear of ultimate accountability.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)Classical scholars highlight that this verse addresses the pre-Islamic Arab materialists (the Dahriyyah), who believed solely in the physical world and blamed the passage of time (Ad-Dahr) for their destruction. In response to this mindset, the Prophet ﷺ narrated a Hadith Qudsi where Allah states, "The son of Adam offends Me by cursing time, for I am time; in My Hand is the alternation of night and day." Time has no independent power; it is merely a vehicle directed by the Creator.

"And whenever Our clear revelations are recited to them, their only argument is to say: “Bring our forefathers back, if what you say is true!”"

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يَجْمَعُكُمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
"Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “˹It is˺ Allah ˹Who˺ gives you life, then causes you to die, then will gather you ˹all˺ on the Day of Judgment, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.”"
Plain UnderstandingA gentle but firm reorientation to our shared reality. You did not author your own beginning, nor do you control your end, and the fleeting journey between these two points inevitably leads back to the Creator who sustains your every heartbeat.

وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَخْسَرُ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ
"To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. On the Day the Hour will be established, the people of falsehood will then be in ˹total˺ loss."
Plain UnderstandingA gentle reminder that our worldly possessions, titles, and perceived power are merely borrowed. True ownership belongs to the Creator. When the temporary illusion of this world finally fades, those who anchored their existence to falsehood will realize they hold nothing at all.
Divine WisdomWhen you attach your heart to that which is passing, you inevitably pass away with it. Attaching your heart to the Eternal Sovereign ensures that when the Hour arrives, you find yourself standing securely in His grace, rather than mourning the loss of illusions.

وَتَرَىٰ كُلَّ أُمَّةٍۢ جَاثِيَةًۭ ۚ كُلُّ أُمَّةٍ تُدْعَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
"And you will see every faith-community on its knees. Every community will be summoned to its record ˹of deeds˺. ˹They all will be told,˺ 'This Day you will be rewarded for what you used to do.'"
Plain UnderstandingThis is the profound moment from which the Surah takes its name: Al-Jathiyah (The Kneeling). It paints an awe-inspiring scene of ultimate vulnerability. Every nation, regardless of its earthly power, wealth, or arrogance, will be brought to its knees before the Absolute Truth, awaiting the reading of their own story.
Purification of the SelfThe act of kneeling on the Day of Judgment is involuntary, stripped of all earthly ego. The spiritual path teaches us to kneel willingly in prayer today, surrendering our pride by choice, so that the kneeling on that Day is a posture of familiar intimacy and comfort rather than one of sudden, overwhelming terror.

"This record of Ours speaks the truth about you. Indeed, We always had your deeds recorded ˹by the angels˺."
Plain UnderstandingYour life is a deeply witnessed narrative. Every tear shed in secret, every hidden act of kindness, and every silent struggle has been intimately and meticulously recorded. The Book of Deeds is not merely a ledger for judgment, but a beautiful testament that your existence truly mattered and was never overlooked by your Creator.
Divine Wisdom [Imam Al-Ghazali]Al-Ghazali notes that on the Day of Judgment, the Divine does not impose a foreign or arbitrary judgment upon you. Instead, the record simply plays back the spiritual state you cultivated with your own hands. He merely returns to you the autobiography you spent a lifetime writing.

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَيُدْخِلُهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
"As for those who believed and did good, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is ˹truly˺ the absolute triumph."
Plain Understanding
A profoundly comforting reassurance for the weary soul. Notice that the ultimate reward is not described merely as a physical paradise, but as being entirely enveloped in His mercy. True success is finally arriving at the source of all love, healing, and absolute safety.
Purification of the Self
Observe the beautiful, disproportionate exchange of Divine love: we are asked to offer our limited, deeply flawed worldly deeds, and in return, He does not just give us a measured compensation. Instead, He immerses us entirely in His infinite grace. Our sincere deeds are simply the gentle knock on the door; His mercy is the eternal home we are warmly invited into.
Divine Wisdom [Ibn Ata'illah]
"He made the Hereafter the realm to reward His believing servants only because this world cannot encompass what He wishes to give them, and because He deemed their worth too high to reward them in a realm devoid of permanence." The "absolute triumph" is the transition from a fleeting world of exhaustion into the enduring embrace of His care.

"And as for those who disbelieved, ˹they will be told,˺ “Were My revelations not recited to you, yet you acted arrogantly and were a wicked people?"
Plain UnderstandingA moment of heartbreaking clarity. The Divine inquiry here is not to seek information, but to hold up a mirror. It asks the soul to reflect on the times when truth was lovingly and clearly presented, but personal pride and stubbornness prevented it from being embraced.
Purification of the SelfArrogance is often the thickest veil between the servant and the Creator. When the ego swells and demands supremacy, the inner ears of the heart are deafened to the gentle, persistent recitation of divine guidance.

"And whenever it was said ˹to you˺, ‘Surely Allah’s promise ˹of judgment˺ is true and there is no doubt about the Hour,’ you said ˹mockingly˺, ‘We do not know what the Hour is! We think it is no more than speculation, and we are not convinced ˹that it will ever come˺.’"
Plain UnderstandingDoubt is frequently used as a shield against spiritual responsibility. Here, we see how skepticism can become a comfortable habit, insulating the ego from the profound duty of preparing for the ultimate meeting with the Creator.
Divine WisdomTrue certainty requires an open, vulnerable heart. Cynicism is often the intellect's way of avoiding the surrender required by faith, keeping the soul trapped in the shallow, restless waters of endless speculation rather than anchoring it in truth.

وَبَدَا لَهُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
"And the evil ˹consequences˺ of their deeds will unfold before them, and they will be overwhelmed by what they used to ridicule."
Plain UnderstandingSin is not simply a broken rule; it is a spiritual reality we construct around ourselves. On the Day of Gathering, the abstract choices of our past manifest into undeniable, crushing realities, surrounding us with the very truths we once dismissed with a laugh.
Purification of the SelfThe warnings we mock in this world often represent the exact spiritual medicine our souls desperately need. To laugh at divine counsel is to arrogantly throw away the cure, only to face the full, unmitigated weight of the spiritual illness later.
ConsequencesRidiculeReality of Sin
وَقِيلَ ٱلْيَوْمَ نَنسَىٰكُمْ كَمَا نَسِيتُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَـٰذَا وَمَأْوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِينَ
"It will be said, “This Day We will neglect you as you neglected the meeting of this Day of yours! Your home will be the Fire, and you will have no helpers."
Plain UnderstandingA sobering, pastoral warning about the nature of divine reciprocity. The Divine does not experience human forgetfulness; rather, this is the painful, lonely reality souls experience when they are finally granted the total independence from God that they insisted upon during their earthly lives.
Divine WisdomTo actively "forget" the meeting with the Divine is to live entirely on the superficial surface of existence. The ultimate tragedy depicted here is not just physical punishment, but the total withdrawal of Divine intimacy—being left utterly alone with the ego one so fiercely protected.

ذَٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذْتُمْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُوًۭا وَغَرَّتْكُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ فَٱلْيَوْمَ لَا يُخْرَجُونَ مِنْهَا وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ
"This is because you made a mockery of Allah’s revelations, and were deluded by ˹your˺ worldly life.” So ˹from˺ that Day ˹on˺ they will not be taken out of the Fire, nor will they be allowed to appease ˹their Lord˺."
Plain UnderstandingThe illusion of the material world promises permanence but delivers only fleeting distraction. This verse serves as a compassionate, urgent wake-up call to anchor our hearts in what is eternal, urging us to seek reconciliation while the doors of repentance remain wide open.
Purification of the Self [Ibn Ata'illah]"The cosmos is all darkness. It is illumined only by the manifestation of God in it." When the heart is deeply deluded by the superficial glitter of worldly life, it falls in love with the darkness, tragically mistaking fleeting shadows for the eternal sun.

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْحَمْدُ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَرَبِّ ٱلْأَرْضِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"So all praise is for Allah—Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of all worlds."
Plain UnderstandingAfter recounting the proofs of creation, the shifting of winds, and the ultimate accountability of humanity, the Surah brings the heart to its only natural resting place: total, encompassing gratitude. He is not a distant deity, but the active, continuous Nurturer (Rabb) of the vast cosmos and your own personal world.
Purification of the SelfWhen the veil of ego is finally lifted, the soul realizes that no praise truly belongs to anyone but the Source. Any admiration we feel for beauty, intellect, or kindness in this temporary life is ultimately just a reflection of His perfect Lordship over all worlds. True liberation is redirecting all praise back to Him.

"To Him belongs ˹all˺ Majesty in the heavens and the earth. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise."
Plain UnderstandingTrue greatness and absolute majesty belong exclusively to the Creator. When we attempt to claim absolute pride or superiority over others, we are trying to wear a garment that was never meant for us. Our ultimate peace is found not in self-aggrandizement, but in surrendering to His perfect power and wisdom.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)Classical scholars beautifully connect this verse to the famous authentic Hadith Qudsi where the Prophet ﷺ relayed that Allah states: "Pride is My cloak and Majesty (Al-Kibriyaa) is My garment, and whoever competes with Me regarding one of them, I shall cast him into the Fire." This highlights that majesty is a divine prerogative; for a human to claim it is a tragic transgression of their own created nature.
