Surah Fussilat

The revelation was delivered in the clear, deeply eloquent Arabic of the Quraysh so that they could not claim ignorance or misunderstanding. The utter perfection of its linguistic structure was presented as an undeniable, self-evident proof to a society that prided itself heavily on poetry and oration.

This verse powerfully captures the exact sentiment of Makkan leaders. When the Prophet ﷺ recited the Quran to them, some would literally cover their garments over their heads and mockingly declare that an impenetrable wall existed between his new faith and their ancestral traditions.

Because this is a Makkan revelation (before the formal, institutionalized rates of Zakat were established in Madinah), many classical commentators like Ibn Abbas and Ibn Kathir explain that "Zakat" here also refers to the purification of the soul (Tazkiyah) from the filth of polytheism. To refuse this spiritual purification is intertwined with the refusal to physically give to others.

Classical scholars note that these "Days" of creation refer to divine epochs or stages, rather than standard human 24-hour cycles. The meticulous, phased preparation of the earth's sustenance is a testament to God's boundless providence for all creatures, ensuring that the needs of the seekers are met before they even ask.

The Makkan leaders were intimately familiar with the ruins of 'Ad and Thamud from their seasonal trade journeys to Yemen and Syria. The Prophet ﷺ was instructed to use these visible, undeniable remnants of destroyed civilizations as a profound and immediate warning against their own stubbornness.

The punishment of 'Ad is detailed by classical scholars as a devastating, freezing gale that relentlessly battered them for seven nights and eight days. The wind, usually a merciful blessing that carries rain, became the instrument of their complete undoing, stripping away their power and leaving them hollow like fallen palm trunks.

Scholars explain that on the Day of Judgment, when individuals attempt to adamantly deny their misdeeds and argue their innocence, their mouths will be sealed by divine command. It is then that their physical limbs will be granted speech to state the undeniable truth of their actions.

This verse directly correlates with the famous Hadith Qudsi where Allah declares: "I am as My servant expects Me to be." If a person expects God to be negligent or powerless, and lives corruptly based on that assumption, they seal their own tragic fate through their very own worldview.

The Makkan elites actively orchestrated campaigns of disruption. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ would stand to recite the Quran publicly, leaders would instruct people to whistle, shout, clap, and chant loudly to drown out the divine words, terrified of its magnetic pull on the soul of anyone who truly listened.

This miraculous descent of angels occurs specifically during the most vulnerable and terrifying transitions of human existence: at the moment of death, within the grave, and upon resurrection, ensuring the believer is never left feeling isolated or abandoned.

The renowned early scholar Hasan al-Basri would recite this verse and remark, "This is the beloved of Allah, this is the friend of Allah... he answered Allah's call, invited others to it, and acted righteously." It offered profound validation to the Prophet ﷺ and his companions who faced daily mockery simply for inviting others to truth.

In explaining "respond with what is best," Ibn Abbas elegantly summarized it as: "Patience at the time of anger, and forgiveness at the time of mistreatment." When the early Muslims practiced this amidst intense persecution in Makkah, it profoundly disarmed their enemies, leading many prominent opponents to eventually embrace the faith.

Note that the phrasing "from before it or behind it" signifies that no previously revealed scripture can contradict its core monotheistic message, nor can any future discovery, societal shift, or fabricated text ever invalidate its perfect divine wisdom.

The Makkan elite were desperately searching for any logical inconsistency to discredit the Prophet ﷺ. Had the revelation come in a foreign tongue, they would have immediately dismissed it as incomprehensible to an Arab audience. Yet, when delivered in their own pure, unmatched Arabic, they still turned away. The verse exposes that their rejection was rooted deeply in stubbornness, not in any legitimate lack of clarity.

This verse was revealed to directly console the Prophet ﷺ regarding the fierce, heartbreaking opposition of his own people. By referencing the struggles of Moses (Musa), peace be upon him, it demonstrates a historical pattern: resistance is a natural companion to revelation, and the Prophet ﷺ is not alone in his sorrow.
