"We relate to you, [O Muhammad], the absolute best of stories in what We have profoundly revealed to you of this Qur'an, although you were, before it, definitely among the unaware."
Plain UnderstandingGod promises the grieving Prophet: "I am about to tell you the single greatest story ever told." Why is it the best? Because it contains every human emotion—jealousy, betrayal, seduction, grief, patience, and ultimate victory. And God points out a miracle: "Muhammad, you had no idea this detailed history of Joseph even existed until I revealed it to your heart right now."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Ahsan al-qasas" (The best of stories). Revealed during the "Year of Sorrow" ('Aam al-Huzn), the Prophet ﷺ was facing assassination plots from his own tribe, just as Yusuf faced murder from his own brothers. The Jews of Medina challenged the Meccans to ask Muhammad ﷺ "why the Israelites moved to Egypt" to test his prophethood. This revelation not only proved his divine connection but served as a psychological mirror: "Just as Yusuf's brothers plotted against him and he eventually forgave them from a throne, your tribe plots against you, but you will eventually conquer them."

إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّى رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبًا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ رَأَيْتُهُمْ لِى سَـٰجِدِينَ
"[Mention] when Joseph said to his father, 'O my dear father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them actively prostrating to me.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe epic story begins with a brilliant, cosmic dream. A young boy named Yusuf runs to his father, Prophet Jacob (Ya'qub), and says: "Dad! I had an incredible vision! I saw eleven stars, and the sun, and the moon all bowing down directly to me!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Ra'aytuhum lee sajideen" (I saw them prostrating to me). A Prophet's dream is not the random firing of a subconscious mind; it is pure "Wahy" (revelation). The dream acts as the spiritual anchor for the entire Surah. God gives Yusuf a glimpse of the glorious ending before plunging him into a lifetime of terrifying trials. When you know God has guaranteed your ultimate victory, you can endure the darkness of the well and the cold walls of the prison.

قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقْصُصْ رُءْيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُوا۟ لَكَ كَيْدًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
"He urgently said, 'O my dear son, do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they intensely plot against you a malicious plot. Indeed, Satan is to mankind a clear, glaring enemy.'"
Plain UnderstandingHis father instantly realizes the massive, dangerous weight of this dream. He knows Yusuf's older half-brothers are already deeply jealous of him. Jacob urgently warns him: "Keep this a total secret! Do not tell your brothers, or their jealousy will drive them to construct a deadly plot against you. Satan loves to use jealousy to destroy families."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)Notice the profound emotional intelligence of Prophet Ya'qub. He warns Yusuf of the impending betrayal, but he specifically blames "Satan" as the ultimate enemy ("Inna ash-shaytana... 'aduwwun"). By redirecting the ultimate malice toward the Devil rather than strictly condemning the brothers' essence, a wise father preserves the possibility of future reconciliation. "'And exactly thus will your Lord explicitly choose you and teach you the profound interpretation of narratives and complete His magnificent favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, exactly as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is All-Knowing and perfectly Wise.'"

"[Mention] when they bitterly said, 'Joseph and his brother are vastly more beloved to our father than we are, while we are a large, strong group. Indeed, our father is in obvious error.'"

They failed to realize that Ya'qub’s love for Yusuf was not based on physical utility, but on recognizing the brilliant, divine light of prophethood already glowing inside the young boy. Jealousy blinded them to the spiritual reality.

ٱقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ أَوِ ٱطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًۭا يَخْلُ لَكُمْ وَجْهُ أَبِيكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ قَوْمًا صَـٰلِحِينَ
"'Kill Joseph or violently cast him out to some [distant] land; the face of your father will then be exclusively free for you, and you will become, immediately after that, a righteous people.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe jealousy officially mutates into a homicidal plot. One brother says: "Let's just murder him, or kidnap him and abandon him in a distant desert! Once he is gone, Dad's love will finally belong 100% to us!" قَالَ قَآئِلٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ لَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْهُ بَعْضُ ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ
"A speaker among them urgently said, 'Absolutely do not kill Joseph, but throw him into the dark depths of the well; some passing caravan will pick him up - if you must do [something].'"
Plain UnderstandingGod's unseen rescue plan activates through the voice of the oldest brother (Judah/Rubil). He intervenes to prevent cold-blooded murder: "No, don't kill him! If we must get rid of him, just drop him into the bottom of a dark well near the trade routes. A passing caravan of merchants will fish him out and take him far away. We get what we want, and we don't have his blood on our hands."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The illusion of human plotting. The brothers thought *they* were executing a flawless conspiracy to remove Yusuf from their father's house. In reality, God used their own malice as the exact transportation mechanism required to move Yusuf from the tents of Canaan to the royal palaces of Egypt! The "dark depths of the well" was not Yusuf's grave; it was his elevator to the throne. God's plan envelops their plot completely.

قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مَا لَكَ لَا تَأْمَنَّا عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَنَـٰصِحُونَ
"They smoothly pleaded, 'O our father, what is entirely wrong with you that you absolutely do not trust us with Joseph, while indeed, we are to him deeply sincere counselors?'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers initiate their toxic manipulation. They attempt to gaslight their grieving father, acting deeply offended and wounded that he doesn't trust them with their little brother. They put on a flawless, theatrical performance of being loving, protective older siblings.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The psychology of deception. "Ma laka la ta'manna" (Why do you not trust us?). The guilty ego always projects its own corruption as a failure of trust on the part of the victim. By acting offended, the brothers attempt to put Prophet Ya'qub on the defensive, forcing him to justify his completely accurate intuition. Deception always cloaks itself in the garments of "Nasihoon" (sincere advisors).

أَرْسِلْهُ مَعَنَا غَدًا يَرْتَعْ وَيَلْعَبْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
"'Send him with us tomorrow so that he may freely enjoy himself and enthusiastically play. And indeed, we will absolutely be his fierce guardians.'"
Plain UnderstandingThey deploy the perfect, irresistible bait: a child's natural desire to go outside and play. They guarantee their father that they will act as his fierce, unbreakable bodyguards, knowing exactly what horrific crime they are about to commit against him.

قَالَ إِنِّى لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ أَن تَذْهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَخَافُ أَن يَأْكُلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَأَنتُمْ عَنْهُ غَـٰفِلُونَ
"He sorrowfully replied, 'Indeed, it deeply saddens me that you should take him away, and I am terrified that a wolf might violently devour him while you are completely heedless of him.'"
Plain UnderstandingProphet Jacob's spiritual intuition is screaming at him. He expresses his intense anxiety about letting Yusuf out of his sight. Tragically, by voicing his specific fear—"I am terrified a wolf might eat him while you aren't paying attention"—he accidentally hands his sociopathic sons the exact alibi they will use to cover up their crime.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The danger of articulating your fears. Ya'qub’s fear of the "Dhi'b" (wolf) was a projection of his internal fear of his sons' predatory jealousy. But by naming the wolf out loud, he provided the architects of the plot with a ready-made narrative. The Arabs used to say, "The calamity is attached to the spoken word." Do not hand your enemies the script of your own destruction.

قَالُوا۟ لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ
"They arrogantly scoffed, 'If a wolf were to somehow eat him while we are such a massive, powerful clan, indeed, we would then be utterly pathetic losers!'"
Plain UnderstandingThey dismiss his fears with loud, arrogant confidence. "Dad, are you joking? Look at how big and strong we are! If a wild animal managed to snatch our little brother while ten grown men were standing right there, we would be the biggest losers on earth!"

فَلَمَّا ذَهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَن يَجْعَلُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم بِأَمْرِهِمْ هَـٰذَا وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
"So when they finally took him away and unanimously agreed to violently drop him into the dark depths of the well [they did so]. But We profoundly inspired him, 'You will definitively inform them of this horrific deed of theirs while they absolutely do not perceive [who you are].'"
Plain UnderstandingThe exact moment they are out of their father's sight, the masks drop. Ten grown men surround a terrified young boy, rip off his shirt, and drop him into a pitch-black, terrifying well in the middle of the desert. But at the absolute bottom of that dark well, God intervenes. He drops a divine revelation into Yusuf's panicked heart: "Do not be afraid! You are going to survive this. One day, you will confront them with this exact crime when they least expect it!"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Wa awhayna ilayhi" (And We inspired him). The descent into the well was Yusuf's initiation into Prophethood. God does not speak to Yusuf while he is comfortably sitting in his father's lap; the revelation arrives precisely in the suffocating darkness of the "Jubb" (the well). It is a universal spiritual rule: profound divine intimacy and reassurance are unlocked exclusively in the moments of our deepest worldly isolation and trauma.
The UnseenHopeDivine Justice
وَجَآءُوٓ أَبَاهُمْ عِشَآءًۭ يَبْكُونَ
"And they came back to their father at the dark approach of the night, loudly weeping."
Plain UnderstandingLook at the calculating nature of sociopaths! They didn't come home immediately. They deliberately waited until nightfall to return, using the darkness of the evening to hide their facial expressions and avoid making eye contact, loudly crying fake crocodile tears to sell their horrific lie.

قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ إِنَّا ذَهَبْنَا نَسْتَبِقُ وَتَرَكْنَا يُوسُفَ عِندَ مَتَـٰعِنَا فَأَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ بِمُؤْمِنٍۢ لَّنَا وَلَوْ كُنَّا صَـٰدِقِينَ
"They dramatically cried, 'O our father, indeed we went off racing one another and completely left Joseph with our possessions, and the wolf violently devoured him. But you would absolutely never believe us, even if we were perfectly truthful.'"
Plain UnderstandingThey deploy the exact excuse their father had handed them earlier! "Dad, it was an accident! We were running a foot race, we took our eyes off him for just one second, and the wolf you warned us about came and ate him!" And then they add the ultimate, manipulative defense mechanism: "We know you already hate us, so you won't believe us anyway, even though we are telling the truth!"

وَجَآءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍۢ كَذِبٍۢ ۚ قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًۭا ۖ فَصَبْرٌۭ جَمِيلٌۭ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ
"And they brought upon his shirt entirely fake blood. He firmly declared, 'No! Rather, your own dark souls have enticed you to profoundly manufacture a matter. So [my course is] beautiful, unbreakable patience. And Allah is the only One sought for help against the horrific thing you are describing.'"
Plain UnderstandingThey hand the grieving father Yusuf's shirt stained with sheep's blood. But Jacob is a Prophet; he looks at the shirt and sees it is perfectly intact without a single tear or rip! He knows they are lying. But he is an old man facing ten violent sons. He makes a majestic, historic declaration: "You made this up! I cannot fight you, so my response is 'Sabrun Jameel' (Beautiful Patience). I will not complain to the people; I will take my unimaginable grief directly to God!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Fasabrun Jameel" (So beautiful patience). What makes patience "beautiful"? Regular patience is simply enduring pain because you have no other choice, often accompanied by complaining to others. "Beautiful Patience" is enduring catastrophic trauma while entirely severing your complaints to the creation. Ya'qub refuses to seek sympathy from his corrupt sons or his tribe; he redirects the totality of his bleeding heart strictly to "Allahu al-Musta'an" (Allah, the One whose help is sought).

وَجَآءَتْ سَيَّارَةٌۭ فَأَرْسَلُوا۟ وَارِدَهُمْ فَأَدْلَىٰ دَلْوَهُۥ ۖ قَالَ يَـٰبُشْرَىٰ هَـٰذَا غُلَـٰمٌۭ ۚ وَأَسَرُّوهُ بِضَـٰعَةًۭ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ
"And there unexpectedly arrived a traveling caravan, and they quickly sent their water-drawer. He violently dropped his bucket, [and when he pulled it up] he shouted, 'O breathtaking good news! This is a young boy!' And they immediately concealed him as highly valuable merchandise. And Allah was intimately Knowing of exactly what they were doing."
Plain UnderstandingMeanwhile, deep in the terrifying well, a caravan stops for water. A man drops his bucket into the darkness. Little Yusuf grabs the rope and is pulled into the blinding sunlight! The merchants are shocked, but they don't rescue him to return him to his family; their greedy eyes light up with dollar signs. They quickly hide him, planning to traffic him as expensive merchandise! Throughout all this horror, God is silently watching.
The UnseenWealthProphetic History
وَشَرَوْهُ بِثَمَنٍۭ بَخْسٍۢ دَرَٰهِمَ مَعْدُودَةٍۢ وَكَانُوا۟ فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلزَّٰهِدِينَ
"And they cheaply sold him for a drastically reduced price - merely a few miserable, countable dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those who treat [something] with complete apathy and disregard."
Plain UnderstandingTo cover their tracks quickly, the brothers (or the merchants) sell the beautiful, brilliant future King of Egypt for just a few miserable, cheap silver coins. They looked at a magnificent, divine soul and assigned him practically zero value, utterly blind to the fact that they had just sold one of the greatest human beings to ever live.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Bithamanin bakhsin" (For a reduced/miserable price). The tragedy of human valuation. The brothers (or the caravan) sold Yusuf cheaply because stolen goods are always liquidated quickly to avoid detection. This establishes a profound spiritual metaphor: the Dunya (the world) always drastically undervalues the true believer. The world looked at Yusuf and saw a disposable slave worth a few dirhams. God looked at Yusuf and saw the savior of an entire continent.

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِى ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ مِن مِّصْرَ لِٱمْرَأَتِهِۦٓ أَكْرِمِى مَثْوَىٰهُ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَنفَعَنَآ أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُۥ وَلَدًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرِهِۦ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
"And the one from Egypt who profoundly purchased him said to his wife, 'Make his residence highly comfortable and honorable. Perhaps he will deeply benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son.' And exactly thus, We firmly established Joseph in the land that We might intensely teach him the interpretation of narratives. And Allah is absolute and entirely dominant over His affair, but the vast majority of the people simply do not know."
Plain UnderstandingLook at the sheer brilliance of God's unseen planning! The brothers plotted to kill Yusuf by throwing him in a well, but God used their exact plot as the transportation system to deliver Yusuf directly into the royal palace of Egypt's Chief Minister (Al-'Azeez)! The Minister is so captivated by the boy that he treats him like royalty. God proves He is the undisputed Master of destiny.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Wallahu ghalibun 'ala amrihi" (And Allah is dominant over His affair). This is the grand thesis statement of the entire Surah. The brothers plotted, the caravan plotted, and later the politicians will plot—but human plotting is merely an instrument used by God to execute His Divine Will. You can throw the believer into the darkest hole on earth, but if God has decreed they will sit on a throne, the hole simply becomes the first step of the staircase.
The UnseenProphetic HistoryAttributes of Allah
وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥٓ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"And when he definitively reached his full physical and intellectual maturity, We majestically gave him absolute judgment and knowledge. And thus exactly do We rigorously reward the doers of supreme excellence."
Plain UnderstandingYusuf grows up in the highest levels of Egyptian politics and luxury. Because he maintained his pure, flawless character (Ihsan) despite being a kidnapped slave, God rewards him by granting him massive intellectual brilliance, wisdom, and the decisive ability to judge complex matters.

وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ ٱلَّتِى هُوَ فِى بَيْتِهَا عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ وَغَلَّقَتِ ٱلْأَبْوَٰبَ وَقَالَتْ هَيْتَ لَكَ ۚ قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَحْسَنَ مَثْوَىَّ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
"And she, in whose majestic house he was, fiercely sought to seduce him from his [pure] self. She aggressively locked the massive doors and whispered, 'Come here, I am entirely for you.' He roared, '[I seek] the absolute refuge of Allah! Indeed, he [your husband] is my master, who has made my residence highly honorable. Indeed, the unjust oppressors will absolutely never succeed.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate test of loyalty and purity! The most powerful, beautiful woman in Egypt—the wife of his owner—is obsessed with Yusuf. She isolates him, securely locks all the heavy palace doors, and explicitly demands him. In that terrifying, high-pressure moment of total secrecy, Yusuf’s character shines like a diamond. He roars: "God forbid! Your husband trusted me and treated me with honor. I will never commit such a disgusting betrayal. Oppressors never win!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Wa ghallaqati al-abwab" (She aggressively locked the doors). God uses the intensified verb form "ghallaqati" rather than "aghlaqati" to indicate she locked multiple, massive doors with heavy bolts. Every physical barrier to discovery was removed. From a worldly perspective, there were zero consequences for Yusuf complying. Yet, Yusuf's immediate cry, "Ma'ath Allah" (God is my refuge!), proves that true "Taqwa" is not doing the right thing when people are watching; it is maintaining your integrity when absolutely no one is watching.

"And she had certainly fiercely desired him, and he would have inclined to her had he not instantly seen the brilliant, undeniable proof of his Lord. Thus it was, that We entirely diverted from him violent evil and utter immorality. Indeed, he was completely of Our explicitly chosen, purified servants."
Plain UnderstandingShe was aggressively advancing, and as a young, biological human male, the intense temptation was there. But right before he could even incline toward the sin, God flashed a profound spiritual realization (a "Burhan") directly into Yusuf's heart! God intervened to violently push the evil away from him, because Yusuf was a genuinely pure, chosen servant.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Linasrifa 'anhu as-sooa" (That We might divert the evil from him). Notice the exquisite phrasing. God does not say "We diverted him from the evil"; God says "We diverted the evil from him." When a believer cultivates a state of "Ikhlas" (pure, unadulterated sincerity to God), they generate a spiritual forcefield. The temptation physically approached Yusuf, but the divine shield of his purity repelled the sin itself, protecting his prophetic integrity.

وَٱسْتَبَقَا ٱلْبَابَ وَقَدَّتْ قَمِيصَهُۥ مِن دُبُرٍ وَأَلْفَيَا سَيِّدَهَا لَدَا ٱلْبَابِ ۚ قَالَتْ مَا جَزَآءُ مَنْ أَرَادَ بِأَهْلِكَ سُوٓءًا إِلَّآ أَن يُسْجَنَ أَوْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
"And they both violently sprinted to the door, and she aggressively tore his shirt from the back, and they suddenly found her master [husband] directly at the door. She instantly cried, 'What is the exact recompense of one who intends violent evil for your wife, except that he be imprisoned or [receive] a deeply agonizing punishment?'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf turns and sprints for the locked door to escape! She chases him, grabs his shirt from behind, and rips it. Suddenly, the heavy door opens, and her powerful husband is standing right there! Caught in the act, she immediately flips the narrative with terrifying sociopathic speed. She points at Yusuf, gaslights her husband, and screams: "Look what your slave tried to do to me! Throw him in a dark dungeon or torture him immediately!"

Plain UnderstandingYusuf refuses to be framed. He stands tall and states the exact truth: "She is lying. She tried to seduce me, and I was running away." The husband is confused. Suddenly, a member of the wife's own family (or a wise advisor standing nearby) intervenes with brilliant forensic logic: "Look at the physical evidence! If Yusuf's shirt is ripped from the front, it means he was attacking her and she fought him off—she is telling the truth."

The husband turns to his powerful, wealthy wife in disgust and declares: "This is a setup! You chased him, and then you tried to frame an innocent man to protect your own ego. Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Inna kaydakunna 'atheem" (Indeed, your plotting is massive). The irony is profound. In verse 5, God called Satan's plot "weak," but the husband calls the wife's psychological plotting "massive." Why? Because Satan only whispers in the unseen; he has no physical authority. But a powerful human being operating a psychological deception in the physical world (gaslighting, using status to crush a slave) exerts a terrifying, immediate danger.

He tries to quickly sweep it under the rug! He says: "Yusuf, forget this ever happened. Don't tell anyone. And wife, you need to apologize, you are completely guilty." A massive cover-up begins.

"And women in the massive city began to whisper, 'The wife of Al-'Azeez is actively seeking to seduce her slave boy from himself. He has violently penetrated her heart with deep love. Indeed, we clearly see her in obvious, pathetic error.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe political cover-up failed. The explosive scandal leaks into the high-society circles of Egypt! The elite women start fiercely gossiping: "Can you believe the Chief Minister's wife? She is completely obsessed with her own slave! She has lost her mind and completely humiliated herself."

فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ بِمَكْرِهِنَّ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَعْتَدَتْ لَهُنَّ مُتَّكَـًۭٔا وَءَاتَتْ كُلَّ وَٰحِدَةٍۢ مِّنْهُنَّ سِكِّينًۭا وَقَالَتِ ٱخْرُجْ عَلَيْهِنَّ ۖ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ وَقَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلْنَ حَـٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا هَـٰذَا بَشَرًا إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا مَلَكٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ
"So when she explicitly heard of their malicious scheming, she sent for them and meticulously prepared for them a banquet. She explicitly gave each one of them a knife and commanded [Joseph], 'Walk out before them.' So when they actually saw him, they vastly exalted him and violently cut their own hands and gasped, 'Absolute perfection belongs to Allah! This is absolutely not a human being; this is nothing but a magnificent, noble angel!'"
Plain UnderstandingWhen she hears their judgmental gossip, she doesn't apologize; she plots revenge! She invites the elite women to a luxurious banquet, gives them fruit, and places extremely sharp knives in their hands. At the exact moment they are holding the knives, she orders Yusuf to walk into the room. The women look up, and the sheer, breathtaking majesty of his unearthly beauty completely paralyzes their brains. They go into psychological shock, pressing the knives directly into their own hands without even feeling the pain, screaming: "God is flawless! This isn't a mortal man; this is a literal angel!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Wa qatta'na aydiyahunna" (And they cut their own hands). The anesthesia of awe. When the human heart is entirely consumed by the overwhelming beauty of a creation (Yusuf), the biological nervous system literally ceases to register physical pain (the slicing of the hands). The Sufis use this as the ultimate metaphor: If gazing upon a beautiful *creation* can make you completely numb to the agony of a knife, imagine the absolute ecstasy of gazing directly upon the *Creator* in Paradise! The pain of the Dunya completely vanishes in the presence of Divine Majesty.

قَالَتْ فَذَٰلِكُنَّ ٱلَّذِى لُمْتُنَّنِى فِيهِ ۖ وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ فَٱسْتَعْصَمَ ۖ وَلَئِن لَّمْ يَفْعَلْ مَآ ءَامُرُهُۥ لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونًۭا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ
"She triumphantly declared, 'That is the exact one about whom you so harshly blamed me! And I had certainly sought to actively seduce him, but he firmly and flawlessly protected his purity. And if he absolutely does not do what I explicitly order him to do, he will definitively be violently imprisoned and he will absolutely be of those totally humiliated!'"
Plain UnderstandingShe looks at the bleeding women and gloats with terrifying sociopathic pride. "See? Now you know why I lost my mind over him! Yes, I tried to seduce him, and yes, he rejected me. But the game isn't over. I am the most powerful woman in Egypt. If this slave does not sleep with me right now, I will throw him into a dark, filthy dungeon and absolutely destroy his life!"

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱلسِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ ۖ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّى كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
"He desperately prayed, 'My Lord, the prison is vastly more beloved to me than that to which they aggressively invite me. And strictly unless You physically divert their malicious plot away from me, I might incline toward them and become utterly of the ignorant.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf is now trapped in a room full of powerful, wealthy women all demanding he compromise his morality. He doesn't rely on his own willpower. He cries out to God in one of the most heroic prayers in history: "My Master! I would rather rot in a filthy prison cell for the rest of my life than disobey You! But I am just a human being. If You don't intervene and protect me from their psychological warfare right now, my biology might fail and I will fall into horrific sin!"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Wa illa tasrif 'annee kaydahunna" (And unless You divert their plot from me). The absolute pinnacle of "Tawadu'" (humility). Yusuf does not brag about his own iron willpower. He realizes that resisting temptation is not a personal achievement; it is exclusively a divine rescue. The ego says: "I am strong enough to fight this." The Prophet says: "I am totally bankrupt; if God does not step in and physically block this sin, I will be destroyed." This desperate recognition of weakness is exactly what guarantees the divine shield.

فَٱسْتَجَابَ لَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ فَصَرَفَ عَنْهُ كَيْدَهُنَّ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
"So his Lord flawlessly responded to him and entirely diverted from him their malicious plot. Indeed, it is He who is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
Plain UnderstandingGod immediately answers the desperate prayer of a pure heart! God intervened, blocking their plot and protecting Yusuf's honor. God hears the silent screams of the oppressed and knows exactly how terrifying the pressure of temptation can be.

ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا۟ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍۢ
"Then it became completely apparent to them, even after they had absolutely seen the undeniable proofs [of his innocence], that they must absolutely imprison him for a specified time."
Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate political injustice. The Minister, the advisors, and the judges all look at the physical evidence (the ripped shirt) and know with 100% certainty that Yusuf is completely innocent. But to protect the reputation of the wealthy elite and kill the scandalous gossip, they decide to frame the innocent slave and lock him in a dungeon anyway. Justice is sacrificed on the altar of public relations.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Hatta heen" (For a specified time). The phrase denotes a calculated, indefinite sentence without a trial. The elites believed they were burying Yusuf alive to erase their shame. But in the grand calculus of Divine decree, the prison was an incubator. God needed Yusuf to meet specific people in that exact prison who would eventually connect him to the King of Egypt. The gross injustice of the state was the exact vehicle used to eventually conquer the state.

وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ ٱلسِّجْنَ فَتَيَانِ ۖ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَآ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَعْصِرُ خَمْرًۭا ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَحْمِلُ فَوْقَ رَأْسِى خُبْزًۭا تَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِنْهُ ۖ نَبِّئْنَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"And there forcefully entered the prison with him two young men. One of them urgently said, 'Indeed, I saw myself [in a dream] forcefully pressing wine.' And the other frantically said, 'Indeed, I saw myself carrying upon my head bread, from which the birds were violently eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we absolutely see you as being of the doers of supreme excellence.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf is thrown into a dark, miserable cell. Joining him are two political prisoners, servants of the King. They both have terrifying, vivid dreams and immediately turn to Yusuf. Even in the darkness of a dungeon, Yusuf's flawless character (Ihsan) shines so brightly that total strangers recognize him as a profoundly righteous, trustworthy man. They beg him to interpret their nightmares.

قَالَ لَا يَأْتِيكُمَا طَعَامٌۭ تُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓ إِلَّا نَبَّأْتُكُمَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمَا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمَا مِمَّا عَلَّمَنِى رَبِّىٓ ۚ إِنِّى تَرَكْتُ مِلَّةَ قَوْمٍۢ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَهُم بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
"He authoritatively replied, 'Absolutely no food will come to you with which you are provided except that I will perfectly inform you of its interpretation entirely before it comes to you. That is purely from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have completely abandoned the religion of a people who absolutely do not believe in Allah, and they, concerning the Hereafter, are total disbelievers.'"
Plain UnderstandingBefore he answers their dreams, Yusuf seizes the opportunity to do his job as a Prophet! He builds their trust: "I promise I will tell you the meaning of the dreams before our next meal arrives. But listen carefully: I am not a psychic or a magician. This knowledge is a direct gift from God! I completely reject the corrupt, idol-worshipping culture of Egypt."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The strategy of "Da'wah" (calling to God). Yusuf was unjustly framed, stripped of his royalty, and thrown into a dungeon. The ego would wallow in depression. But the Prophet's heart is completely untethered to external circumstances. He doesn't waste time complaining about the Chief Minister's wife; he immediately turns the prison cell into a university of Tawheed! When the heart is illuminated, a prison becomes a mosque.

وَٱتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ
"'And I have strictly followed the pure religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is absolutely not for us to associate anything whatsoever with Allah. That is exclusively from the massive bounty of Allah upon us and upon the people, but the vast majority of the people are completely ungrateful.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf reveals his true royal lineage to the prisoners. "I am not a slave! I am the grandson of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! We worship the One True Creator and refuse to bow to statues or politicians. Monotheism is the greatest, most massive blessing God has ever given humanity, but most people are too arrogant and blind to appreciate it."

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ ءَأَرْبَابٌۭ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ
"'O my two companions of the prison, are numerous, scattered lords vastly better, or Allah, the One, the Absolutely Irresistible, the Subduer?'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf drops a bombshell of sheer logic on the two Egyptian prisoners. "Think about it! Does it make sense to divide your heart, praying to a hundred different, competing fake gods who can't even help themselves? Or is it infinitely better to surrender your entire soul to the One, Supreme, Unstoppable King of the universe who controls everything?"

مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءًۭ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
"'You absolutely do not worship besides Him anything except mere names you have invented - you and your fathers - for which Allah has sent down absolutely no authority. The ultimate command and judgment belongs entirely to none but Allah. He has strictly commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the perfect, upright religion, but the vast majority of the people simply do not know.'"
Plain UnderstandingHe shatters their entire cultural mythology: "These idols you bow to? They are just empty names that you and your ancestors invented out of thin air! They have zero cosmic authority. All power, all legislation, and all command belong exclusively to God. That is the only logical, upright way to live, even if the entire Egyptian empire is too blind to realize it."

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ أَمَّآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِى رَبَّهُۥ خَمْرًۭا ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِن رَّأْسِهِۦ ۚ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ
"'O my two companions of the prison, as for one of you, he will absolutely pour wine for his lord [the king]. But as for the other, he will definitively be crucified, and the birds will violently eat from his head. The matter has been irrevocably decreed about which you both seek a fatwa [inquiry].'"
Plain UnderstandingHaving delivered the truth of God, Yusuf delivers the terrifying interpretation of their dreams without flinching. "For the one who dreamed of pressing grapes: you are innocent. You will be released and get your job back pouring wine for the King. But for the one who dreamed of bread on his head: you are guilty. You will be executed, crucified, and birds will eat from your skull. Do not argue with me; the verdict from heaven has already been locked."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Qudiya al-amru" (The matter has been irrevocably decreed). According to tradition, when the second prisoner heard the terrifying interpretation, he panicked and lied, saying, "I didn't actually have a dream; I was just joking!" Yusuf replies that the interpretation is not a game. Once a Prophet decodes a vision through Wahy (revelation), it transitions from a dream into a finalized divine decree. The execution was now mathematically guaranteed.
The UnseenProphetic HistoryDivine Justice
وَقَالَ لِلَّذِى ظَنَّ أَنَّهُۥ نَاجٍ مِّنْهُمَا ٱذْكُرْنِى عِندَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنسَىٰهُ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِى ٱلسِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِينَ
"And he urgently said to the one whom he knew would definitively be saved of the two, 'Mention me in the presence of your lord [the king].' But Satan actively made him forget the mentioning [to] his lord, so he remained confined in the prison for several more years."
Plain UnderstandingAs the innocent man is being released to go work for the King, Yusuf asks for one small favor: "Please, when you see the King, tell him about my case! Tell him I am an innocent man rotting in here!" But Satan caused the released prisoner to completely forget about Yusuf. Because of that forgotten promise, Yusuf was left to suffer in that dark dungeon for several more agonizing years.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The profound spiritual danger of relying on "Asbab" (worldly means). Yusuf, in a moment of intense human desperation, sought his release through the political influence of the cupbearer ("Mention me to your king"). But God requires absolute, undiluted Tawakkul from His elite Prophets. To purify Yusuf's reliance, God allowed the man to forget him. Yusuf had to remain in prison until his heart detached entirely from the doors of kings, waiting exclusively for the Door of the King of Kings to open.

وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ سَبْعَ بَقَرَٰتٍ سِمَانٍۢ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌۭ وَسَبْعَ سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ خُضْرٍۢ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ ۖ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِى فِى رُءْيَـٰىَ إِن كُنتُمْ لِلرُّءْيَا تَعْبُرُونَ
"And the King urgently said, 'Indeed, I absolutely see [in a terrifying dream] seven fat cows being violently devoured by seven lean, emaciated ones, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others completely dry. O you elite establishment, issue a verdict to me concerning my vision, if you should be interpreters of visions.'"

"They arrogantly dismissed, '[It is nothing but] a jumbled, chaotic mixture of false dreams, and we are absolutely not knowing of the interpretation of such chaotic dreams.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe elite scholars of Egypt stare at him blankly. Rather than admitting their own ignorance, they protect their egos by dismissing the King's nightmare as just the random, meaningless firing of a stressed brain. "It's just a jumbled mess of a nightmare, my King. We only interpret real visions, not this nonsense."
ArroganceHuman NatureThe Unseen
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِى نَجَا مِنْهُمَا وَٱدَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أُمَّةٍ أَنَا۠ أُنَبِّئُكُم بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ فَأَرْسِلُونِ
"And the one who had miraculously been saved of the two [prisoners] and completely remembered after a massive period of time urgently said, 'I will definitively inform you of its absolute interpretation, so immediately send me forth.'"
Plain UnderstandingSuddenly, a jolt of electricity hits the cupbearer! After years of completely forgetting the innocent man rotting in the dungeon, the King's dream unlocks his memory. He steps forward in the royal court and shouts, "I know exactly who can solve this! Give me permission to go to the prison right now!" God's timing is utterly flawless.

يُوسُفُ أَيُّهَا ٱلصِّدِّيقُ أَفْتِنَا فِى سَبْعِ بَقَرَٰتٍ سِمَانٍۢ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌۭ وَسَبْعِ سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ خُضْرٍۢ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ لَّعَلِّىٓ أَرْجِعُ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
"'Joseph, O man of absolutely unbreakable truth! Issue a decisive verdict to us concerning seven fat cows violently devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others utterly dry - so that I may urgently return to the people; perhaps they will finally know.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe cupbearer sprints down to the filthy cell. Does Yusuf yell at him for forgetting him for years? Does Yusuf demand a pardon before he speaks? No! The cupbearer begs: "Yusuf, you are the most truthful man alive! Please explain this terrifying dream about the cows and the grain so I can take the answer back to the King!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Ayyuha as-Siddeeq" (O man of absolute truth). Notice how the cupbearer addresses him. He doesn't call him a dream interpreter; he calls him a "Siddeeq." Yusuf's flawless moral integrity in the prison overshadowed even his prophetic abilities. A true believer's character forces even those who betrayed them to acknowledge their blinding spiritual light.

قَالَ تَزْرَعُونَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ دَأَبًۭا فَمَا حَصَدتُّمْ فَذَرُوهُ فِى سُنۢبُلِهِۦٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ
"He authoritatively replied, 'You will actively plant for seven consecutive years with massive diligence; and whatever you miraculously harvest, leave it safely protected in its spike, except a very little from which you will eat.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf doesn't negotiate. Driven entirely by his prophetic mercy, he instantly decodes the dream and delivers a brilliant, macro-economic survival plan to save the lives of millions of Egyptians who worship fake gods! "You will have seven years of massive economic boom. Work relentlessly! But do not consume the harvest; store the grain exactly in its protective casing so it doesn't rot, and eat only what you strictly need to survive."

ثُمَّ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ سَبْعٌۭ شِدَادٌۭ يَأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا مِّمَّا تُحْصِنُونَ
"'Then there will violently arrive immediately after that seven devastatingly severe [years of famine] which will utterly devour what you had carefully advanced [stored] for them, except a very little of what you strictly guard.'"
Plain Understanding"Because after those seven good years, a completely devastating, apocalyptic seven-year drought will hit the entire region! That brutal famine will entirely devour the massive stockpile you built up, leaving almost nothing behind. If you do not execute this exact storage plan, your empire will starve to death."
WarningKnowledge & SignsThe Unseen
ثُمَّ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَامٌۭ فِيهِ يُغَاثُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَفِيهِ يَعْصِرُونَ
"'Then there will magnificently come after that a year in which the people will be showered with abundant rain and in which they will profusely press [grapes and olives].'"
Plain UnderstandingThen Yusuf does something incredible. He adds a piece of information that wasn't even in the King's dream! "But don't lose hope. After the fourteen years of chaos, God will send a glorious fifteenth year. The skies will open, the rains will pour down, and the people will press so much fruit for oil and juice that the economy will explode with joy." Yusuf delivers the divine cure before the disaster even strikes.
HopeThe UnseenAttributes of Allah
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱئْتُونِى بِهِۦ ۖ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُ ٱلرَّسُولُ قَالَ ٱرْجِعْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَسْـَٔلْهُ مَا بَالُ ٱلنِّسْوَةِ ٱلَّـٰتِى قَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى بِكَيْدِهِنَّ عَلِيمٌۭ
"And the King urgently commanded, 'Bring him to me entirely!' But when the royal messenger aggressively came to him, [Joseph] firmly declared, 'Return definitively to your lord [the king] and strictly ask him what is the exact case of the women who violently cut their own hands. Indeed, my Lord is intimately Knowing of their malicious plot.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe King is completely blown away by Yusuf's genius. He immediately orders his release: "Bring this man to the palace right now!" The guard runs to the cell and unlocks the door. But Yusuf does the unthinkable. He refuses to leave the filthy cell! He tells the royal guard: "Go back to your King. I am not sneaking out the back door like a pardoned criminal. Tell him to officially reopen my case and investigate the women who cut their hands. I will not leave this prison until my name is publicly cleared!"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wept when he recited this verse, saying: "May Allah have mercy on my brother Yusuf! If I had stayed in prison as long as he did, I would have instantly accepted the caller's invitation to leave!" Yusuf's refusal to accept a mere pardon is the absolute pinnacle of human dignity ("Izzah"). He demanded an exoneration. He knew that if he left as a "pardoned criminal," his prophetic message would forever be tainted by the scandal. He forced the State to legally declare his innocence.

قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُنَّ إِذْ رَٰوَدتُّنَّ يُوسُفَ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ قُلْنَ حَـٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِن سُوٓءٍۢ ۚ قَالَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ حَصْحَصَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَنَا۠ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
"[The King summoned them and] sternly asked, 'What was exactly your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph from his purity?' They universally gasped, 'Absolute perfection belongs to Allah! We completely know upon him absolutely no evil whatsoever.' The wife of Al-'Azeez definitively declared, 'Now the absolute truth has been violently exposed. It was I who sought to actively seduce him from himself, and indeed, he is entirely of the truthful!'"
Plain UnderstandingThe King is stunned by Yusuf's boldness and immediately hauls the elite women into court. Under the intense pressure of the royal inquiry, their lies collapse. The women admit: "God is our witness, Yusuf never did a single impure thing!" Cornered, the wife of the Chief Minister finally breaks down and confesses everything publicly: "The truth is out. I was the predator. I tried to seduce him, and he is a perfectly honest, innocent man!"
Divine JusticeAccountabilityTruth
ذَٰلِكَ لِيَعْلَمَ أَنِّى لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى كَيْدَ ٱلْخَآئِنِينَ
"[Joseph later profoundly declared], 'That is so he [Al-'Azeez] will definitively know that I absolutely did not betray him in secret [the unseen], and that indeed Allah absolutely does not successfully guide the malicious plot of betrayers.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf steps into the light, completely exonerated. He explains exactly why he stayed in prison and forced the investigation: "I did this so my former master, who took me in as a boy, knows with absolute certainty that I never stabbed him in the back when he wasn't looking. God never allows the dark plots of traitors to achieve ultimate victory!"

وَمَآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِىٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلنَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ بِٱلسُّوٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّىٓ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
"'And I absolutely do not claim my own soul to be inherently innocent. Indeed, the human soul is a violent, persistent enjoiner of absolute evil, except precisely those upon which my Lord fiercely bestows His mercy. Indeed, my Lord is profoundly Forgiving and intensely Merciful.'"
Plain UnderstandingDespite winning the ultimate moral victory, Yusuf does not flex his ego. He delivers one of the most magnificent statements of humility in the Qur'an: "I don't claim that I am an angel! As a human being, my biological ego is constantly screaming at me to commit sin. The only reason I survived that locked room was because God wrapped His massive mercy around me. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Inna an-nafsa la-ammaratun bis-sooo'" (Indeed the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil). This is the foundational anatomy of the human ego. The "Nafs al-Ammarah" is the primitive, animalistic drive that aggressively commands sin. Yusuf recognizes that moral purity is not a permanent, static trait of human biology; it is a dynamic, continuous state of divine intervention ("Illa ma rahima Rabbi" - Except what my Lord has mercy upon). The moment a believer attributes their purity to their own willpower, they have already fallen to the ego.
HumilitySpiritual PracticeAttributes of Allah
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱئْتُونِى بِهِۦٓ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِى ۖ فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُۥ قَالَ إِنَّكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌۭ
"And the King authoritatively commanded, 'Bring him directly to me; I will exclusively appoint him for my own self.' So when he intimately spoke to him, he declared, 'Indeed, you are today, right in our majestic presence, highly established and absolutely trusted.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe King is mesmerized. Not only is this man a brilliant economist and a psychic, he possesses a terrifying level of moral integrity and honor. The King orders him brought to the throne room. After speaking with him directly, the absolute monarch of Egypt hands over the keys to the kingdom: "From this exact second forward, you are the most powerful and trusted man in my entire empire."
Divine JusticeHopeProphetic History
قَالَ ٱجْعَلْنِى عَلَىٰ خَزَآئِنِ ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ إِنِّى حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
"He decisively requested, 'Appoint me explicitly over the massive storehouses of the earth [Egypt]. Indeed, I am an intensely fiercely guarding guardian and deeply knowing.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf does not ask for a life of luxury or early retirement. Recognizing the catastrophic famine about to hit the world, he demands the hardest, most stressful job in the government! He asks to be made the Minister of Finance and Agriculture, knowing he is the only human being on earth who has the divine knowledge and the incorruptible honesty required to execute the survival plan and save millions from starving.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Innee hafeedhun 'aleem" (Indeed I am a guarding, knowing). Is it permissible for a believer to ask for a position of power? Yes, if doing so is the only way to prevent mass catastrophe and execute justice. Yusuf did not seek the treasury for his ego; he sought it because the upcoming 14-year economic cycle required a leader who was "Hafeedh" (incorruptible, fiercely protective of resources) and "'Aleem" (possessing the specific macro-economic knowledge to manage the crisis). Humility does not mean letting incompetent tyrants run the world into the ground.

وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَآءُ ۚ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَآءُ ۖ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"And exactly thus We flawlessly established Joseph in the land to settle majestically therein wherever he absolutely wills. We cause Our immense mercy to fiercely reach whom We strictly will, and We absolutely never waste the massive reward of the doers of supreme excellence."
Plain UnderstandingLook at the breathtaking trajectory of God's plan! The boy who was stripped naked, thrown into a dark hole by his own brothers, and sold as a slave, is now the ultimate ruler of Egypt, commanding the wealth of the entire continent. God guarantees that if you maintain your flawless excellence (Ihsan) during the darkest times, He will eventually flood you with victory.
HopeDivine JusticeAttributes of Allah
وَلَأَجْرُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ
"And without doubt, the breathtaking reward of the Hereafter is vastly better for those who deeply believed and were continuously fearing Allah."
Plain UnderstandingBut God drops a profound perspective shift! As glorious, massive, and incredible as it is to be the King of Egypt and rule the world, the reward waiting for Yusuf in Paradise is infinitely better. Worldly thrones will turn to dust, but the Kingdom of the next life belongs eternally to those who protect their hearts with pure faith and Taqwa.

وَجَآءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ
"And the brothers of Joseph arrived and desperately entered upon him. And he instantly recognized them, but they, of him, were completely ignorant [unrecognizing]."
Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate dramatic irony! Driven by severe starvation in Canaan, the ten brothers travel to Egypt to buy food. They bow before the terrifying, powerful King of the Egyptian treasury. Yusuf looks down from his throne and instantly recognizes the faces of the men who threw him in the well! But because he is now a grown man dressed in royal Egyptian robes, speaking a different language, they have absolutely no idea they are begging for their lives from their little brother.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Fa 'arafahum wa hum lahu munkiroon" (He recognized them, but they did not recognize him). The blindness of the ego. The brothers looked at Yusuf and only saw "The King of Egypt." They evaluated reality purely through the lens of power and wealth. Yusuf looked at them and saw the exact reality of who they were. When you throw someone into the dark, you lose the ability to recognize them when God places them in the light.
Prophetic HistoryFamilyDivine Justice
وَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ قَالَ ٱئْتُونِى بِأَخٍۢ لَّكُم مِّنْ أَبِيكُمْ ۚ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنِّىٓ أُوفِى ٱلْكَيْلَ وَأَنَا۠ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ
"And when he had fully furnished them with their massive supplies, he commanded, 'Bring to me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not clearly see that I give full measure and that I am the absolute best of hosts?'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf does not execute them or expose himself yet. He plays a brilliant psychological game to test if they have changed, and to orchestrate a reunion with his full blood-brother, Benjamin (who stayed home with their father). Through questioning, he gets them to mention Benjamin, then commands: "Next time you come for grain, you must bring this younger brother to prove you aren't foreign spies! Look at how generously I have treated you today!"
LeadershipFamilyProphetic History
فَإِن لَّمْ تَأْتُونِى بِهِۦ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِندِى وَلَا تَقْرَبُونِ
"'But if you absolutely do not bring him to me, then there will be no measure [of grain] for you with me, nor will you even come near me.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf drops a terrifying ultimatum on them. "If you show up in Egypt again without that younger brother, do not even approach my borders! You will get absolutely no food, and your families will starve." He deliberately forces them into a corner where they have to convince their traumatized father to let his youngest son go.
WarningFamilySteadfastness
قَالُوا۟ سَنُرَٰوِدُ عَنْهُ أَبَاهُ وَإِنَّا لَفَـٰعِلُونَ
"They nervously replied, 'We will urgently attempt to persuade his father concerning him, and indeed, we will absolutely do [it].'"
Plain UnderstandingTerrified of losing their only food supply, the brothers immediately agree. "We promise, Your Majesty! We will negotiate with his father and do everything in our power to bring him here next time!"
FamilyHuman Nature
وَقَالَ لِفِتْيَـٰنِهِ ٱجْعَلُوا۟ بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ فِى رِحَالِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَآ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
"And he discreetly commanded his servants, 'Put their merchandise [money] directly back into their saddlebags so they might clearly recognize it when they have returned to their family; perhaps they will eagerly return.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf orchestrates a brilliant trap of generosity. He secretly orders his royal guards to take all the money the brothers used to buy the grain and hide it back inside their bags of food. Yusuf knows that when they get home and realize the King gave them all their money back, they will feel legally and morally obligated to return to Egypt, guaranteeing he sees Benjamin!
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Ij'aloo bida'atahum fee rihalihim" (Put their merchandise in their saddlebags). Why did Yusuf return their money? First, his prophetic dignity refused to take the wealth of his own starving father and brothers for public grain. Second, it was a psychological lever: Arab honor would dictate that keeping mistakenly returned money is theft. By returning their capital, he ethically forced their return. It is a masterpiece of divine diplomacy.

فَلَمَّا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيهِمْ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مُنِعَ مِنَّا ٱلْكَيْلُ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَآ أَخَانَا نَكْتَلْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
"So when they finally returned to their father, they urgently cried, 'O our father, the measure [of grain] has been definitively denied to us [for the future], so urgently send our brother with us that we may get our measure. And indeed, we will absolutely be his fierce guardians.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers rush back to Canaan and hit their father with the bad news immediately. "Dad, the King of Egypt was terrifying! He said we are permanently banned from buying food unless we bring Benjamin with us next time! You have to let him come, or we will all starve. We promise we will protect him with our lives!"

قَالَ هَلْ ءَامَنُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا كَمَآ أَمِنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَخِيهِ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ فَٱللَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَـٰفِظًۭا ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
"He sorrowfully replied, 'Should I deeply trust you with him except exactly as I trusted you with his brother previously? But Allah is the absolute best guardian, and He is the most profoundly Merciful of the merciful.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe trauma of the well rips back open! Jacob looks at his sons and drops a devastating truth: "You just used the exact same words you used decades ago! 'We will guard him.' Why on earth would I trust you with Benjamin after what you did to Yusuf? I don't trust your protection at all; my only trust is in the protection and mercy of God!"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Fallahu khayrun hafitha" (But Allah is the best guardian). The evolution of Ya'qub's Tawakkul. When they took Yusuf, Ya'qub expressed a worldly fear: "I fear the wolf will eat him." But decades of agonizing grief have purified his reliance. Now, faced with losing his second beloved son, he bypasses earthly fears entirely and anchors his heart strictly to the Ultimate Guardian. He shifts from trusting the "Asbab" (worldly means) to trusting the "Musabbib" (The Creator of the means).

وَلَمَّا فَتَحُوا۟ مَتَاعَهُمْ وَجَدُوا۟ بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مَا نَبْغِى ۖ هَـٰذِهِۦ بِضَـٰعَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا ۖ وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍۢ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ كَيْلٌۭ يَسِيرٌۭ
"And when they eagerly opened their baggage, they astonishingly found their merchandise [money] returned strictly to them. They excitedly cried, 'O our father, what more could we possibly desire? This is our wealth decisively returned to us! And we will provide food for our family and fiercely guard our brother and easily obtain an increase of a camel's load! That is an exceedingly easy measure [to obtain].'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf's psychological trap springs perfectly! When the brothers open their bags and see all their money sitting right there, they are ecstatic. They use it as the ultimate leverage against their father: "Dad, look! The King is incredibly generous! He gave us the food for free! If we bring Benjamin, not only do we get to keep our money, but the King will give us an entire extra camel-load of food! It's a guaranteed win!"

قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌۭ
"He authoritatively commanded, 'I will absolutely never send him with you until you definitively give me a solemn oath by Allah that you will absolutely bring him back to me, unless you are entirely surrounded and overpowered.' So when they had firmly given him their oath, he declared, 'Allah is the absolute Disposer of affairs over what we uniquely say.'"
Plain UnderstandingStarvation leaves Jacob no choice, but he refuses to let them take Benjamin without an ironclad, terrifying divine contract. "I don't trust your word. You must swear the most massive, unbreakable oath by God Almighty that you will bring him home to me, unless every single one of you is killed and overpowered!" Once they swear the oath, Jacob locks the contract: "God is witnessing this promise."

وَقَالَ يَـٰبَنِىَّ لَا تَدْخُلُوا۟ مِنۢ بَابٍۢ وَٰحِدٍۢ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ مِنْ أَبْوَٰبٍۢ مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍۢ ۖ وَمَآ أُغْنِى عَنكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۖ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَعَلَيْهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ
"And he wisely instructed, 'O my dear sons, absolutely do not enter from one single gate, but desperately enter from diverse, separate gates; and I absolutely cannot avail you against Allah at all. The ultimate decision belongs strictly to none but Allah. Upon Him I have placed my absolute trust, and upon Him alone let all those who would trust place their trust.'"
Plain UnderstandingBefore they leave, their Prophet father gives them strategic advice. Eleven strong, handsome, foreign men walking into the capital city of Egypt together will instantly attract the "evil eye" (jealousy) or the suspicion of the royal guards. "Split up! Enter the city through different gates to avoid drawing attention. I am trying to protect you physically, but remember, my advice cannot stop God's decree. God is the ultimate authority, and I trust only Him."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The flawless balance of "Asbab" (means) and "Tawakkul" (trust). Ya'qub explicitly commands his sons to take tactical, strategic precautions (entering from different gates). But he instantly purifies their theology: taking precautions does not actually alter the decree of God ("I cannot avail you against Allah"). The believer must exhaust the physical means of protection in the Dunya, while their heart remains exclusively attached to the absolute decree of the Master.

وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةًۭ فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍۢ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
"And when they carefully entered exactly from where their father had commanded them, it absolutely did not avail them against Allah at all, except [it fulfilled] a deep need within the soul of Jacob, which he discharged. And indeed, he was profoundly possessing of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but the vast majority of the people simply do not know."
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers obeyed their father and sneaked into the city from different gates. But God reveals a profound secret: their tactical stealth didn't actually change anything about God's massive plan to test them in Egypt! However, giving that advice healed the intense anxiety and trauma in Jacob's own heart as a father trying to protect his children. God praises Jacob's immense spiritual knowledge, highlighting that the Prophet understood exactly how to balance worldly caution with absolute divine trust.

وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ ءَاوَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَخَاهُ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا۠ أَخُوكَ فَلَا تَبْتَئِسْ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
"And when they decisively entered upon Joseph, he drew his brother [Benjamin] intimately to himself. He secretly whispered, 'Indeed, I am your own brother, so absolutely do not despair over what they used to do.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers arrive in Egypt with Benjamin. In a private, heart-stopping moment, Yusuf pulls his younger blood-brother aside and drops his royal Egyptian mask. "Benjamin, it's me! I am Yusuf! Stop crying over the horrific things these older brothers did to us in the past. We are finally back together."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Awa ilayhi akhahu" (He drew his brother to himself). Decades of agonizing separation end in a single, quiet embrace. Yusuf immediately cures Benjamin's deep psychological trauma by revealing the unseen reality. The brothers thought they had destroyed the family, but Yusuf's declaration ("Do not despair over what they did") proves that the malicious plots of the creation are utterly powerless when the Creator decides it is time to heal you.

Plain UnderstandingThe royal guards announce the stakes: "The King's personal golden goblet is gone! We will rip this entire caravan apart. Whoever steps forward and hands it over right now will receive an entire camel-load of free food as a massive reward, and I personally guarantee it."

"They desperately swore, 'By Allah, you have already certainly known that we absolutely did not come to cause violent corruption in the land, and we have never been thieves!'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers are deeply offended. "We swear to God! You know us; we have been here before! We brought back the money we found in our bags last time! We are honorable men, not corrupt criminals or cheap thieves!" They take the bait entirely.

"[The guards] sharply questioned, 'Then what is the exact penalty for it, if you should be exposed as absolute liars?'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf's legal trap snaps shut. The guards ask a brilliant question: "Fine. If you are so innocent, what is the legal punishment if we search your bags and prove that you are lying?"

"They arrogantly replied, 'Its precise penalty is that he in whose bag it is explicitly found - he [himself] will be its penalty [enslaved]. Exactly thus do we rigorously penalize the unjust oppressors.'"
Plain UnderstandingUnder Egyptian law, a thief was only beaten and fined. But the brothers proudly impose their own ancient Canaanite tribal law! "In our tribe, the punishment for theft is enslavement! Whoever has the cup in his bag automatically becomes your slave! That is how we deal with oppressors." They unwittingly hand Yusuf the exact legal authority he needs to keep Benjamin as his "slave"!
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Fahuwa Jaza'uhu" (He himself is its penalty). Yusuf could not legally keep his brother under Egyptian law without exposing his identity, which he was forbidden to do at this stage. By provoking the brothers to explicitly declare their own tribal Shari'ah (where a thief is taken as a slave by the victim), Yusuf mathematically binds them to their own arrogant fatwa. It is a breathtaking masterpiece of divine jurisprudence.

فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَبْلَ وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَخْرَجَهَا مِن وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كِدْنَا لِيُوسُفَ ۖ مَا كَانَ لِيَأْخُذَ أَخَاهُ فِى دِينِ ٱلْمَلِكِ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ مَّن نَّشَآءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌۭ
"So he meticulously began [the search] with their bags entirely before the bag of his brother; then he spectacularly extracted it from the bag of his brother. Exactly thus did We meticulously plan for Joseph. He absolutely could not have legally taken his brother within the religion [law] of the King, except that Allah explicitly willed it. We massively raise in degrees whom We will, but high above every possessor of knowledge is the All-Knowing One."
Plain UnderstandingTo avoid suspicion, Yusuf brilliant searches all the older brothers' bags first, building the suspense. Finally, he opens Benjamin's bag, and pulls out the golden cup! The older brothers are completely horrified. God explicitly steps in to declare: "This wasn't a malicious trick; this was My divine plan! Yusuf legally outsmarted them. No matter how smart humans think they are, God's knowledge is infinitely higher."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Kathalika kidna li-Yusuf" (Thus did We plan for Joseph). Notice the profound contrast. In verse 5, the brothers plotted ("kayd") to destroy Yusuf. Here, God explicitly uses the same word ("kidna" - We plotted) to execute His divine rescue. Human plotting is built on malice, deceit, and arrogance. Divine plotting is built on absolute justice, wisdom, and the eventual elevation of the oppressed. God completely outmaneuvers the ego at every turn.
The UnseenAttributes of AllahDivine Justice
قَالُوٓا۟ إِن يَسْرِقْ فَقَدْ سَرَقَ أَخٌۭ لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِى نَفْسِهِۦ وَلَمْ يُبْدِهَا لَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ أَنتُمْ شَرٌّۭ مَّكَانًۭا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُونَ
"They desperately threw the blame, saying, 'If he steals, well, a brother of his absolutely stole before!' But Joseph securely concealed it deep within his soul and absolutely did not reveal it to them. He quietly said [to himself], 'You are in an utterly worse position, and Allah is most intimately Knowing of exactly what you are describing.'"
Plain UnderstandingCaught with the cup, the older brothers instantly betray Benjamin and throw him under the bus to save themselves! They lie to the King's face, saying, "Well, if he's a thief, it makes sense; he had an older brother [Yusuf] who was also a thief!" Yusuf is standing right there, listening to them casually slander him. The pain must have been agonizing, but he doesn't explode in anger. He locks his emotions entirely inside his heart and quietly thinks, "You are the real criminals, and God knows exactly how much you are lying right now."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Fa-asarraha Yusuf fi nafsihi" (But Joseph concealed it deep within his soul). The absolute pinnacle of Prophetic restraint. The ego's most volatile instinct is to violently defend its own reputation when slandered. Yusuf had the military power of the Egyptian empire behind him; he could have executed them on the spot for calling him a thief. But out of pure submission to the Divine timeline, he swallowed the insult whole. True power is not unleashing your wrath; it is possessing absolute wrath and choosing complete silence.
SteadfastnessHuman NatureFamily
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ إِنَّ لَهُۥٓ أَبًۭا شَيْخًۭا كَبِيرًۭا فَخُذْ أَحَدَنَا مَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"They desperately pleaded, 'O 'Azeez [Chief Minister], indeed he has a father who is a very old, frail man, so strongly take one of us directly in his place. Indeed, we absolutely see you as being of the doers of supreme excellence.'"
Plain UnderstandingThey are completely trapped by their own fatwa! If they return to Jacob without Benjamin, their father will literally die of grief. In sheer panic, they beg Yusuf: "O mighty Minister! Please, his father is an old man whose heart cannot take this! Have mercy on us. Keep one of us as your slave instead and let the boy go home!"

قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ أَن نَّأْخُذَ إِلَّا مَن وَجَدْنَا مَتَـٰعَنَا عِندَهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ
"He authoritatively declared, '[I seek] the absolute refuge of Allah against taking anyone except exactly him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then absolutely be of the unjust oppressors.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf brilliantly rejects their offer using their own logic against them. "God forbid I arrest an innocent man! You were the ones who said the penalty applies only to the thief. If I lock one of you up instead of the one who had the cup, I would be a completely unjust tyrant. Benjamin stays in Egypt!"

فَلَمَّا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟ مِنْهُ خَلَصُوا۟ نَجِيًّا ۖ قَالَ كَبِيرُهُمْ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ أَبَاكُمْ قَدْ أَخَذَ عَلَيْكُم مَّوْثِقًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ مَا فَرَّطتُمْ فِى يُوسُفَ ۖ فَلَنْ أَبْرَحَ ٱلْأَرْضَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْذَنَ لِىٓ أَبِىٓ أَوْ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ لِى ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ
"So when they completely despaired of [persuading] him, they withdrew for a private consultation. The eldest of them firmly said, 'Do you not know that your father has taken upon you a massive oath by Allah, and how, completely before this, you failed tragically concerning Joseph? Therefore, I will absolutely never leave this land until my father permits me or Allah decidedly judges for me; and He is the absolute best of judges.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers realize the King will not change his mind. Benjamin is locked in the Egyptian prison. They huddle together in absolute panic. The eldest brother (who originally stopped them from killing Yusuf) refuses to move. "Are you insane? We swore a divine oath to Dad! First we destroyed Yusuf, and now Benjamin? I refuse to go back and look at our father's face. I am staying right here in Egypt until God provides a way out!"

ٱرْجِعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيكُمْ فَقُولُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ إِنَّ ٱبْنَكَ سَرَقَ وَمَا شَهِدْنَآ إِلَّا بِمَا عَلِمْنَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِلْغَيْبِ حَـٰفِظِينَ
"'Return immediately to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen! And we did absolutely not testify except to exactly what we knew, and we were absolutely not guardians over the unseen.''"
Plain UnderstandingThe eldest brother commands the rest: "You go back to Canaan and tell him exactly what happened. Tell him, 'We are so sorry, but your son was caught stealing the King's cup! We aren't lying this time; we saw it with our own eyes, and we couldn't predict the future or stop him!'"

وَسْـَٔلِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ ٱلَّتِى كُنَّا فِيهَا وَٱلْعِيْرَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَقْبَلْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ
"''And urgently ask the massive city in which we were and the caravan in which we approached; and indeed, we are completely truthful.''"
Plain Understanding"And because we know you won't believe us, go ahead and interrogate the people of Egypt! Ask the other merchants in our caravan! They all saw the guards pull the golden cup out of Benjamin's bag. We swear we are telling the truth!"

قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًۭا ۖ فَصَبْرٌۭ جَمِيلٌ ۖ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَأْتِيَنِى بِهِمْ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
"He firmly declared, 'No! Rather, your own dark souls have enticed you to completely manufacture a matter. So [my course is] beautiful, unbreakable patience. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me completely. Indeed, it is He who is the All-Knowing, the perfectly Wise.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers deliver the news, and Jacob's heart shatters all over again. He uses the exact same words he used decades ago: "Your corrupt souls have done something terrible again! But I will maintain my beautiful patience." Then, he makes an impossibly hopeful statement: "Maybe God will bring Yusuf, Benjamin, and the oldest brother all back to me at once! God knows exactly what is happening."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Asa Allahu an ya'tiyanee bihim jamee'a" (Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me). Decades have passed. Yusuf is presumed dead by the entire world. Yet, Ya'qub’s faith defies all earthly logic. When tragedy multiplies, the ego despairs, but Prophetic faith expands. Losing Benjamin didn't make him give up on Yusuf; it actually triggered his absolute certainty that a divine, master plan was actively culminating to return *all* his sons.
HopeSteadfastnessSpiritual Practice
وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَٱبْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌۭ
"And he physically turned away from them and agonized, 'Oh, my devastating sorrow over Joseph!' And his eyes became completely white from severe grief, for he was entirely suppressing [his immense agony]."
Plain UnderstandingThe trauma is too much for the human body to handle. Jacob turns his back on his sons, refusing to look at them. He weeps with such intense, suppressed, agonizing grief over losing Yusuf that the sheer biological stress literally causes cataracts to form over his eyes, turning them completely white. He goes blind from crying.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Wabyaddat 'aynahu... fahuwa katheem" (His eyes turned white... suppressing grief). Is "Sabrun Jameel" (Beautiful Patience) contradicted by weeping until you go blind? Absolutely not. Islam does not demand emotional numbness. "Katheem" means he choked down his grief, refusing to lash out in anger or complain to the creation. His tears were a conversation strictly between his broken heart and his Lord. Crying is a biological release of mercy; complaining is a spiritual failure of trust. Ya'qub wept, but he never complained.
Human NatureFamilySteadfastness
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ تَفْتَؤُا۟ تَذْكُرُ يُوسُفَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا أَوْ تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْهَـٰلِكِينَ
"They harshly said, 'By Allah, you will absolutely not cease to remember Joseph until you become fatally ill or you are entirely among the dead!'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers show zero empathy for their blind, shattered father. They are annoyed by his grief! They yell at him: "By God, you never stop obsessing over Yusuf! It's been decades! You are going to cry yourself to death if you don't let it go!"
ArroganceFamilyHuman Nature
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
"He majestically replied, 'I strictly complain of my agonizing anguish and my deep sorrow exclusively to Allah, and I definitively know from Allah that which you absolutely do not know.'"
Plain UnderstandingJacob delivers one of the most famous, comforting verses in the Qur'an. He doesn't argue with them. He simply says: "I am not complaining to you! You cannot heal me. I am taking my bleeding heart directly to the King of the universe! And because I am a Prophet, God has given me an absolute certainty that Yusuf is alive—a truth your dark hearts cannot comprehend."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Innama ashkoo baththee wa huznee ilallah" (I complain of my anguish exclusively to Allah). The ultimate definition of spiritual maturity. The ego broadcasts its pain to social media, seeking validation and pity from powerless humans. The true believer curates their pain, bypassing the creation entirely, and pouring their "Bath" (uncontrollable, scattered anguish) directly into the Court of the Creator. Complaining *to* God is an act of pure worship; complaining *about* God is an act of sheer rebellion.
Spiritual PracticeHopeSteadfastness
يَـٰبَنِىَّ ٱذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يَا۟يْـَٔسُ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ
"'O my dear sons, go immediately and intensely search out concerning Joseph and his brother, and absolutely do not despair of the profound relief [and mercy] of Allah. Indeed, absolutely no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.'"
Plain UnderstandingFueled by his unbreakable faith, the blind father issues a shocking command: "Go back to Egypt! And don't just look for Benjamin; start aggressively searching for Yusuf too! Do not ever give up hope in God's mercy. The only people who believe a situation is 'impossible' and lose hope are the atheists who don't understand the infinite power of God!"

فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ مَسَّنَا وَأَهْلَنَا ٱلضُّرُّ وَجِئْنَا بِبِضَـٰعَةٍۢ مُّزْجَىٰةٍۢ فَأَوْفِ لَنَا ٱلْكَيْلَ وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَجْزِى ٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ
"So when they finally entered upon him [Joseph], they begged, 'O 'Azeez, extreme hardship has violently touched us and our family, and we have brought [only] pathetic, inferior merchandise. But grant us full measure and give charity to us. Indeed, Allah massively rewards those who give charity.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers return to Egypt completely broken. They are starving, their money is gone, and they are humiliated. They stand in front of the King (Yusuf) and literally beg for charity! "O Mighty Minister! Our family is starving to death. We only have a few worthless, cheap items left to trade. Please, just give us the food anyway as an act of charity. God rewards those who help the poor."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Mussana wa ahlana ad-durr" (Hardship has touched us). Look at the spectacular reversal of power. The strong, arrogant men who laughed as they threw their brother into a well to die of starvation are now on their knees, completely destitute, begging that exact same brother for a loaf of bread to survive. This is the flawless, terrifying perfection of Divine Justice operating over a 40-year timeline.

قَالَ هَلْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا فَعَلْتُم بِيُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ إِذْ أَنتُمْ جَـٰهِلُونَ
"He piercingly asked, 'Do you actually know what exactly you did to Joseph and his brother when you were aggressively ignorant?'"

Speaking in his native tongue, he asks: "Do you remember exactly what you did to a little boy named Yusuf and his brother Benjamin when you were ignorant fools?"

قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ يُوسُفُ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ يُوسُفُ وَهَـٰذَآ أَخِى ۖ قَدْ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
"They gasped in utter shock, 'Are you indeed, actually Joseph?!' He majestically declared, 'I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly bestowed massive favor upon us. Indeed, whoever continuously fears Allah and profoundly endures - then indeed, Allah absolutely never wastes the reward of the doers of supreme excellence.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe brothers freeze in absolute terror. The puzzle pieces instantly snap together. This mighty King knows their deepest, darkest secret! They gasp: "Are you... are you Yusuf?!" He declares: "I am Yusuf! And this is Benjamin! You tried to destroy us, but God elevated us! This is the unbreakable law of the universe: If you protect your purity and stay patient through the darkest trials, God will eventually place a crown on your head!"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Ana Yusuf... Innahu man yattaqi wa yasbir" (I am Yusuf... whoever fears Allah and endures). Yusuf does not use this moment to gloat about his political power. He instantly redirects the glory entirely to God. He summarizes his entire 40-year trauma into a single spiritual formula: "Taqwa + Sabr = Victory." If you hold your moral ground (Taqwa) and weather the storm (Sabr), the divine compensation is mathematically guaranteed.
HopeSteadfastnessDivine Justice
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ ءَاثَرَكَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَإِن كُنَّا لَخَـٰطِـِٔينَ
"They utterly surrendered, 'By Allah, Allah has absolutely preferred you over us, and we were undoubtedly completely in the wrong!'"
Plain UnderstandingTheir egos completely collapse. The men who arrogantly boasted "We are a strong group" decades ago now bow their heads in total defeat. They confess their massive crime without making any excuses: "We swear to God, He chose you to be better than us, and we were completely, totally wrong."
RepentanceHumilityAccountability
قَالَ لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ يَغْفِرُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
"He mercifully declared, 'There is absolutely no blame upon you today. Allah will profoundly forgive you, and He is the most intensely Merciful of the merciful.'"
Plain UnderstandingThey expect him to order their immediate execution. Instead, Yusuf delivers one of the most staggering displays of forgiveness in human history. He doesn't say "I will think about it," and he doesn't lecture them. He wipes their slate clean instantly: "I hold absolutely no grudge against you today! The past is dead. I pray God forgives you too, because His mercy is infinite!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"La tathreeba 'alaykumu al-yawm" (No blame upon you today). This is the absolute zenith of prophetic character (Khuluq). "Tathreeb" means to continuously remind someone of their past mistakes to shame them. Yusuf doesn't just grant legal amnesty; he grants complete emotional amnesty. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ conquered Mecca, standing over the very elites who murdered his family and drove him out, he quoted this exact verse of Yusuf to grant them total forgiveness. True strength is having the power to crush your enemies, but choosing to heal them instead.
Spiritual PracticeFamilyHope
ٱذْهَبُوا۟ بِقَمِيصِى هَـٰذَا فَأَلْقُوهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِ أَبِى يَأْتِ بَصِيرًۭا وَأْتُونِى بِأَهْلِكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
"'Take this exact shirt of mine and cast it directly over the face of my father; he will instantly become seeing [again]. And bring to me your family, all entirely together.'"
Plain UnderstandingYusuf takes off his royal Egyptian shirt. Decades ago, the brothers used Yusuf's blood-stained shirt to shatter their father's heart and destroy his life. Now, Yusuf uses his shirt to heal him! "Take my shirt, run to Canaan, and throw it over my blind father's face. God will restore his vision instantly! Then pack up the entire family and bring everyone to live in luxury in Egypt!"

وَلَمَّا فَصَلَتِ ٱلْعِيرُ قَالَ أَبُوهُمْ إِنِّى لَأَجِدُ رِيحَ يُوسُفَ ۖ لَوْلَآ أَن تُفَنِّدُونِ
"And the exact moment the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father [in Canaan] gasped, 'Indeed, I absolutely find the scent of Joseph [in the wind], if only you would not accuse me of being senile!'"
Plain UnderstandingThe sheer power of prophetic connection! The exact second the caravan leaves Egypt carrying Yusuf's shirt, his blind father, hundreds of miles away in Canaan, suddenly lifts his head. God carried the scent of Yusuf on the wind directly to Jacob's heart. He gasps: "I smell Yusuf! I know you are going to call me a crazy old man, but I swear he is alive!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Innee la'ajidu reeha Yusuf" (Indeed I find the scent of Yusuf). The physics of spiritual love transcend physical geography. While the brothers who lived in the same palace with Yusuf couldn't recognize him because their hearts were blinded by jealousy, the father whose eyes were physically blind recognized him from another country because his heart was illuminated by love and absolute "Yaqeen" (certainty in God).
Knowledge & SignsThe UnseenHope
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَفِى ضَلَـٰلِكَ ٱلْقَدِيمِ
"They harshly replied, 'By Allah, indeed you are still trapped in your old, delusional error.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe family members sitting with him immediately mock him. They roll their eyes and say, "We swear to God, you are completely losing your mind. You are still obsessed with this old delusion that Yusuf is alive."
ArroganceFamilyHuman Nature
فَلَمَّآ أَن جَآءَ ٱلْبَشِيرُ أَلْقَىٰهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِۦ فَٱرْتَدَّ بَصِيرًۭا ۖ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
"So when the bearer of spectacular good tidings actually arrived, he cast it [the shirt] directly over his face, and he instantly returned to seeing flawlessly. He powerfully declared, 'Did I not tell you that I definitively know from Allah that which you absolutely do not know?'"
Plain UnderstandingThe caravan arrives! The messenger sprints into the tent and throws Yusuf's shirt directly onto the old man's face. In a blinding flash of divine grace, the cataracts vanish and Jacob's eyesight is miraculously and perfectly restored! He looks at his shocked family and says: "Did I not tell you?! I knew from God what you didn't! Yusuf is alive!"

قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا خَـٰطِـِٔينَ
"They humbly pleaded, 'O our father, urgently ask forgiveness for our massive sins; indeed, we were entirely in the wrong.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe arrogant brothers are entirely broken. Decades of lies, manipulation, and cruelty collapse. They fall before their father and beg: "Dad, please ask God to forgive us! We committed horrific sins, and we were completely and utterly wrong."
RepentanceHumilityFamily
قَالَ سَوْفَ أَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكُمْ رَبِّىٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
"He mercifully replied, 'I will soon ask my Lord to profoundly forgive you. Indeed, it is He who is the intensely Forgiving, the deeply Merciful.'"
Plain UnderstandingDespite forty years of unimaginable grief caused by their actions, Jacob doesn't seek revenge or curse them. He acts with the massive mercy of a Prophet: "I will pray for you. I will ask my Master to forgive you, because His mercy is infinite."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Sawfa astaghfiru lakum" (I will *soon* ask forgiveness for you). Why did he say "soon" (sawfa) instead of praying right then? The scholars explain he intentionally delayed the prayer until the last third of the night (Tahajjud), the time when divine mercy is most accessible and prayers are categorically accepted. His desire for their forgiveness was so sincere that he strategically optimized the timing to guarantee God would pardon them.
Spiritual PracticeHopeFamily
فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ ءَاوَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَبَوَيْهِ وَقَالَ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مِصْرَ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ءَامِنِينَ
"So when they majestically entered upon Joseph, he drew his parents intimately to himself and proudly declared, 'Enter Egypt, if Allah strictly wills, completely safe and secure.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe grand, epic reunion! The entire family travels to Egypt. The absolute ruler of the empire steps off his throne, runs to the city gates, and throws his arms around his elderly parents. Yusuf welcomes them with a royal decree: "Welcome to Egypt! You are under my protection. You will never starve or be afraid again!"

وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيْهِ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ وَخَرُّوا۟ لَهُۥ سُجَّدًۭا ۖ وَقَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ هَـٰذَا تَأْوِيلُ رُءْيَـٰىَ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّى حَقًّۭا ۖ وَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِىٓ إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِى مِنَ ٱلسِّجْنِ وَجَآءَ بِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْبَدْوِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن نَّزَغَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَ إِخْوَتِىٓ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَطِيفٌۭ لِّمَا يَشَآءُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
"And he elevated his parents directly upon the royal throne, and they all fell down before him in profound prostration. And he said, 'O my dear father, this is the absolute fulfillment of my vision of old! My Lord has made it a spectacular reality. And He was immensely good to me when He rescued me from the prison and brought you all from the desert bedouin life, even after Satan had violently sown division between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is beautifully Subtle in whatever He explicitly wills. Indeed, it is He who is the All-Knowing, the perfectly Wise.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe cinematic climax! Yusuf seats his parents on the royal throne. Overcome with awe at God's plan, his parents (the sun and moon) and his eleven brothers (the stars) bow down before him in respect. Yusuf turns to his father and says: "Dad! This is the dream from when I was a little boy! God made it real! Look how good God is: He pulled me out of the dungeon and brought you out of the desert, after Satan tried to use jealousy to destroy our family! God's planning is so subtle and brilliant."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Qad ahsana bee ith akhrajani min as-sijn" (He was good to me when He rescued me from prison). Notice Yusuf's breathtaking spiritual courtesy (Adab). He mentions being rescued from the prison, but he deliberately does *not* mention being rescued from the well! Why? Because mentioning the well would remind his brothers of their horrific crime and humiliate them in front of the royal court. True forgiveness means you do not weaponize the past against those who have repented. He even blames the entire 40-year trauma on "Satan," completely preserving his brothers' dignity.

۞ رَبِّ قَدْ ءَاتَيْتَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِى مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِىِّۦ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِى مُسْلِمًۭا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
"'My Lord, You have majestically granted me of sovereignty and taught me the profound interpretation of narratives. O flawless Creator of the heavens and the earth, You alone are my absolute Protector in this worldly life and the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim [in perfect submission to You], and seamlessly join me with the supremely righteous.'"
Plain UnderstandingAt the absolute peak of his worldly power—ruling the greatest empire on earth, reunited with his family, incredibly wealthy, and universally loved—Yusuf makes his final prayer. Does he ask for a longer life or more gold? No! He asks for the only thing that actually matters: "O God, You gave me all this power. But You are my only true Protector. Please, just let me die as a Muslim (submitted to You), and let me join the righteous in Heaven."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Tawaffani musliman" (Cause me to die as a Muslim). The ego seeks the Dunya (world); the illuminated heart seeks the Husn al-Khatimah (the good ending). Sitting on the throne of Egypt, Yusuf realizes that political sovereignty is a vanishing mirage. The ultimate success is not surviving the well or escaping the prison; the ultimate success is taking your last breath with a heart completely submitted to the Creator.
Spiritual PracticeHumilityHope
ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ
"That is from the spectacular news of the unseen which We profoundly reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. And you were absolutely not with them when they decisively finalized their malicious plot while they were scheming."
Plain UnderstandingThe story ends, and God speaks directly to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. "This epic masterpiece of history is absolute proof that you are a true Prophet! You were not standing there when the brothers plotted at the well. You could not have known these deep, psychological details unless I revealed them directly into your heart."
Knowledge & SignsThe UnseenProphetic History
وَمَآ أَكْثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
"And the vast majority of the people, no matter how passionately you fiercely desire it, will absolutely not be believers."
Plain UnderstandingGod comforts the Prophet's broken heart: "Even after hearing the most beautiful story ever told, most of the arrogant elites in Mecca will still refuse to believe. Do not let their rejection crush you. You cannot force faith into an arrogant heart, no matter how desperately you want to save them."
WarningHuman NatureSteadfastness
وَمَا تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
"And you absolutely do not ask them for it any reward. It is nothing but a magnificent reminder to the entire worlds."
Plain Understanding"Why are they rejecting you? You aren't charging them a subscription fee to hear this Qur'an! You aren't taking their money. You are delivering a pure, free, life-saving reminder to all of humanity."
Knowledge & SignsWealth
وَكَأَيِّن مِّنْ ءَايَةٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ يَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضُونَ
"And how incredibly many a spectacular sign within the heavens and the earth do they continually pass by, while they are completely turning away from it in absolute disregard."
Plain UnderstandingThe universe is screaming the truth at them! Every sunset, every galaxy, every beating heart is a massive, blinding proof of God's existence. But the arrogant walk past these spectacular miracles every single day like spiritual zombies, utterly blind and distracted by their own egos.
Knowledge & SignsArroganceWarning
وَمَا يُؤْمِنُ أَكْثَرُهُم بِٱللَّهِ إِلَّا وَهُم مُّشْرِكُونَ
"And the vast majority of them absolutely do not believe in Allah except while they are simultaneously associating 'partners' with Him."
Plain UnderstandingEven when they finally admit that God exists, they ruin it! They mix their belief in the Creator with the worship of money, status, politicians, or carved statues. Pure, unfiltered monotheism is incredibly rare because the ego loves to rely on tangible, earthly "partners."
WarningArroganceHuman Nature
أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَـٰشِيَةٌۭ مِّنْ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
"Do they then feel entirely secure that there will not violently come to them an overwhelming cover of the devastating punishment of Allah, or that the Final Hour will not strike them shockingly suddenly while they completely do not perceive it?"
Plain UnderstandingGod shatters their false sense of safety. "Are you really that comfortable in your arrogance? Do you honestly think a terrifying disaster couldn't completely swallow your city tonight? Or that the apocalypse couldn't strike you in a split second while you are busy checking your wealth?"
WarningDivine JusticeThe Unseen
قُلْ هَـٰذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدْعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِى ۖ وَسُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
"Say boldly, 'This is my exact path: I intensely invite to Allah upon brilliant, undeniable insight - I and whoever strictly follows me. And absolutely Exalted is Allah! And I am absolutely not of those who associate partners with Him.'"
Plain UnderstandingThe ultimate manifesto of Islam! God commands the Prophet to declare: "This is my way! I am not guessing in the dark. I am calling humanity to God using pure logic, deep intelligence, and blinding spiritual insight (Baseerah)! I, and everyone who follows me, stand proudly on this clarity. God is flawless, and I will never bow to your fake systems."

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًۭا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ۗ أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۗ وَلَدَارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
"And We absolutely did not send before you [as messengers] any but mere men whom We profoundly inspired, chosen from the people of the cities. So have they absolutely not traveled through the earth and rigorously observed exactly how devastating was the end of those who were before them? And indeed, the home of the Hereafter is vastly better for those who intensely fear Allah. Then will you not actively use your intellect?"
Plain UnderstandingGod didn't send golden angels as Prophets; He sent normal, relatable human men from the cities! Why do the elites reject this? Have they not looked at the ruins of ancient empires that thought they were invincible? The only true safety and luxury is in the afterlife for those who protect themselves from sin. Use your brains!
LogicWarningProphetic History
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَ ٱلرُّسُلُ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ كُذِبُوا۟ جَآءَهُمْ نَصْرُنَا فَنُجِّىَ مَن نَّشَآءُ ۖ وَلَا يُرَدُّ بَأْسُنَا عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
"[They were mocked] until, when the messengers completely despaired and deeply thought that they had been entirely denied [and lied to], Our spectacular victory violently came to them, and whoever We willed was flawlessly saved. And absolutely never is Our devastating wrath repelled from the violent, criminal people."
Plain UnderstandingThe terrifying, magnificent formula of divine victory! God pushes the believers to the absolute breaking point. It is only at the very final second, when the Prophets themselves reach the brink of total despair and feel completely defeated by the massive power of the enemy, that God's victory crashes down like lightning! He rescues the believers, and His wrath obliterates the criminals.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Hatta itha istay'asa ar-rusulu" (Until when the messengers despaired). The physics of "Nasr" (Divine Victory). Victory does not arrive when the believer is comfortable; it arrives when the "Asbab" (worldly means) have entirely collapsed and the ego's hope in the physical world is utterly exhausted. When Yusuf was in the deepest, darkest point of the dungeon, the King had his dream. God extracts the greatest light from the deepest darkness.

لَقَدْ كَانَ فِى قَصَصِهِمْ عِبْرَةٌۭ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ ۗ مَا كَانَ حَدِيثًۭا يُفْتَرَىٰ وَلَـٰكِن تَصْدِيقَ ٱلَّذِى بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ
"There was certainly in their epic stories a massive, profound lesson for those of brilliant intellect. Never was the Qur'an a fabricated, invented narration, but a flawless confirmation of what was before it, and a meticulously detailed explanation of every single thing, and a perfect guidance and intense mercy for a people who actively believe."
Plain UnderstandingGod seals "The Best of Stories" with a final, majestic stamp of authority. "This wasn't a fairy tale to entertain you. This was a massive, life-changing lesson for anyone with a working brain. This Qur'an is not a forged lie; it is the ultimate truth that confirms the ancient scriptures, explains the deepest realities of life, and acts as a brilliant GPS of mercy and guidance for anyone brave enough to believe!"
