"These are the verses of the clear Book."
Plain UnderstandingWhat follows are the profound, illuminating verses of the Scripture that makes the truth absolutely clear and distinct from falsehood.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Al-Mubeen" (The Clarifying/Evident). The tragedy of human rejection is not due to a lack of clarity in the Divine Text, but a lack of purity in the human recipient. When the Book is "Mubeen," it means the burden of misguidance falls entirely upon the arrogance of the reader, not the ambiguity of the Author.

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعٌۭ نَّفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
"Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers."
Plain UnderstandingGod addresses the Prophet with intense compassion: "Are you going to destroy your own soul with grief and sorrow just because these people stubbornly refuse to believe?"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Bakhi'un" denotes grieving to the point of literal, physical self-destruction. The Prophet ﷺ possessed an unimaginably vast capacity for empathy. Knowing the terrifying reality of the Hellfire, he watched his people march blindly toward it. His grief was so consuming it threatened his biology. God intervenes, mandating emotional detachment: your responsibility is solely the delivery of the message, not the execution of their salvation.

"If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled."
Plain Understanding"Do not despair. If We wanted to force them to believe, We could easily send down a massive, terrifying physical miracle from the sky that would force their necks to bow down in absolute submission."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The Meccans constantly demanded spectacular physical miracles (angels, descending palaces, flying mounts). God clarifies that producing such a miracle is effortlessly easy. However, forcing "Khudu'" (humility) through sheer terror violates the fundamental architecture of the Dunya: Free Will. True faith must be a voluntary surrender of the heart, not a biological reflex triggered by cosmic terror.

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن ذِكْرٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ
"And no fresh reminder comes to them from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it."
Plain UnderstandingYet, every time a new, fresh revelation or reminder is sent down to them from the Most Merciful, their immediate reaction is to actively turn their backs and ignore it.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)Notice the Divine Name used: "Ar-Rahman." The revelation is not an act of tyranny; it is an act of pure Grace intended to save them. The tragedy of "Mu'rideen" (turning away) is that they are fleeing from the very Mercy that sustains their existence. When the ego dictates behavior, it routinely perceives the life-raft as a threat.

فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنۢبَـٰٓؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
"For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule."
Plain UnderstandingBecause they have persistently rejected the truth and called it a lie, the terrifying reality of what they used to mock and laugh at will inevitably crash down upon them very soon.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Yastahzi'un" (they ridicule/mock). Ridicule is the lowest, most desperate defense mechanism of the corrupt intellect. Unable to defeat the Prophet's logic, they resort to mockery to diffuse the tension of the warning. The Divine decree promises that the punchline of their jokes will physically manifest as their eternal destruction.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍۢ كَرِيمٍ
"Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?"
Plain UnderstandingDo they not observe the earth beneath their feet? Have they not seen how many beautiful, noble, and beneficial pairs of plants and crops We have caused to grow from it?
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)God redirects their gaze from demanding miracles in the sky to observing the miracles in the dirt. "Zawjin Kareem" (noble pairs). Even ancient botany operated on the system of pairs (pollination). By designing the earth to effortlessly yield complex, beautiful, life-sustaining vegetation, the Creator proves His absolute capability to resurrect human life from that exact same soil.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
"Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers."
Plain UnderstandingTruly, in the growth of these plants is a massive, undeniable proof of God's power. Yet, despite witnessing it every day, the vast majority of people still refuse to believe.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Wa ma kana aktharuhum mu'mineen" (but most of them were not believers). The Qur'an routinely decouples truth from majority consensus. The masses are frequently mesmerized by the illusion of the Dunya, passing by profound miracles (a growing seed) without a second thought. The believer must possess the psychological fortitude to stand in the minority of the "seeing" amidst a majority of the "blind."

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
"And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful."
Plain UnderstandingAnd undeniably, your Master is both Supreme in absolute power, yet intensely Merciful.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The pairing of "Al-'Aziz" (The Mighty/Unconquerable) and "Ar-Raheem" (The Merciful) is the recurring theological refrain of this Surah. God possesses the absolute "Izzah" (Might) to instantly crush the disbelievers for their mockery, yet His "Rahmah" (Mercy) dictates that He delays the punishment, granting them time and sending them countless Messengers. True power is not the rapid execution of wrath, but the majestic restraint of patience.

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The narrative shifts from abstract theology to historical application. Moses is ordered to face "Al-Qawm Adh-Dhalimeen" (the oppressors). The mission is immediately defined by its confrontation with systemic injustice (the enslavement of the Israelites). Standing before the ruler who raised you, who is now a mass-murderer, induces biological panic. He requests Aaron because Aaron possesses the oratorical fluency required to debate in the high-stakes environment of the royal court.

By carrying this "Dhanb" (sin/crime) on his record, he knows that any theological message he brings will be immediately delegitimized by his criminal status. God chooses a man with a broken past to deliver the perfect message.

The ear of the King is inclined to the dialogue.

"Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers of the Lord of the worlds,'"

Though they are two men, their message, mission, and source are so perfectly unified that they operate as a single, indivisible entity. Plain Understanding"Yes, I panicked and ran away from Egypt because I was terrified you would execute me. But during that exile, my True Master granted me immense wisdom and officially appointed me as one of His elite Messengers."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Moses pivots seamlessly from his vulnerability to his current Divine Authority. He acknowledges the human emotion ("khiftukum" - I feared you), proving he is not a demigod. But that fear is now obsolete, because the "Hukm" (Wisdom/Authority) granted to him by the Lord of the Worlds absolutely overrides the political jurisdiction of the Egyptian Pharaoh.

"[Pharaoh] said, 'If you take a deity other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned.'"

The moment a human being values the Akhirah over the Dunya, the tyrant's currency drops to zero. If you threaten a man with death, and his response is "excellent, send me to God," the sword loses its edge. This is the absolute invincibility of Tawheed.

إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
"'Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers.'"
Plain Understanding"Our only concern now is our hope that our True Lord will completely forgive all our past sins and black magic, because we were the absolute first people in this stadium to surrender and believe in Him!"

They recognize that their martyrdom is the exact payment required to wipe clean their lifelong career of deception. By proudly claiming the title of "the first of the believers" (among the Egyptians), they secure their legacy as eternal icons of spiritual redemption.

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
"Thus [it was]. And We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them."

Because they spent their lives desperately trying to bring their hearts near to God, God commands Paradise itself to move and be brought near to them, honoring them as VIP guests.

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ
"And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,"
Plain UnderstandingConversely, the blazing Hellfire will be violently pulled forward and exposed in plain sight for all the rebels and deviators who rejected the truth.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Burrizat" means to expose entirely, leaving absolutely nothing hidden. The "Ghaween" (deviators) spent their lives hiding their sins and burying the truth. In the Hereafter, their destination is agonizingly exposed before the entire assembly, instilling maximum psychological terror before they even feel the heat.

وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
"And it will be said to them, 'Where are those you used to worship"

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)"Kubkibu" is a remarkably vivid, repetitive Arabic verb. It signifies being thrown headlong, tumbling end over end, crashing repeatedly as one falls into an abyss. The idols are thrown in alongside the idolaters to inflict maximum psychological pain: proving that the object they revered is nothing but firewood.

وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ
"And the soldiers of Iblis, all together."
Plain UnderstandingAnd along with them, all the armies and soldiers of Satan—both human and jinn—will be thrown into the Fire together.

Anyone who actively participates in spreading corruption, normalizing sin, or fighting the Truth is classified as a drafted soldier in the army of Iblis (Satan). The general (Satan) and his soldiers share the exact same fate, proving that following orders in the realm of disobedience provides no immunity from the Fire.

"They will say while they dispute therein,"

They realize their crime was one of mathematical absurdity: equating the Zero (the creation) with the Infinite (the Creator).

وَمَآ أَضَلَّنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ
"And no one misguided us except the criminals."
Plain Understanding"And the only reason we are in this fire is because we blindly followed those corrupt, arrogant criminals who led us away from the truth!"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)The ultimate deferral of blame. They attempt to indict the "Mujrimoon" (the elite leaders/criminals) who legislated the corruption. While the leaders will carry a multiplied burden, the followers are not absolved. God granted every human an intellect ("Aql"); outsourcing your spiritual navigation to corrupt politicians or cultural elites guarantees you will share their fiery destination.

"So now we have no intercessors"

The architecture of the Divine Court permanently neutralizes all external leverage. If you did not secure the Intercession through Tawheed and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the courtroom is entirely silent in your defense.

"And not a devoted friend."
Plain Understanding"And we don't have a single close, devoted friend left who is willing to help us or share this pain."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Sadeeqin Hameem" (a warm, fiercely loyal friend). Earthly friendships built upon the disobedience of God are inherently fragile. When the terrifying heat of Hellfire strikes, the biological instinct for self-preservation overrides all worldly loyalties. The "best friend" from the Dunya will step on your neck in the Akhirah if it means escaping the flame for a microsecond. True friendship is only that which is built upon Taqwa (piety).

فَلَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةًۭ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
"Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers...'"
Plain UnderstandingThey will weep and beg: "Oh, if only we could get just one more chance! If we could just return to the earth for a single day, we swear we would be the best of believers!"

The tragedy is that every human currently breathing *is* in their "Karrah." You are currently living the exact opportunity the inhabitants of Hell are screaming for. They trusted the strength of the rock more than the strength of the Creator.

Because the society silently endorsed and celebrated the slaughter to regain their monopoly on the water, the entire society bore the legal guilt. The "Nadam" (regret) they felt was not repentance; it was the sheer biological terror of knowing the promised execution was now inescapable.

Once they were all trapped beneath it, it rained down liquid fire and burning ashes upon them. They were destroyed by the exact sky they mocked.

Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The ego is completely immune to logic when its pride is threatened. They rejected Muhammad ﷺ out of tribal jealousy, claiming he was just a poet. But if a foreigner had delivered it, they would have rejected him out of racial supremacy, claiming they would never follow a non-Arab. Disbelief will always manufacture a tailored excuse to avoid submission.

كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَـٰهُ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
"Thus have We inserted it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals."

Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Salaknahu" literally means to thread a needle or weave something tightly. When a human being repeatedly, consciously chooses to reject the Truth (like Pharaoh, 'Aad, or the Meccan elite), God's justice allows that denial to "thread" itself permanently into their spiritual anatomy. They become functionally incapable of belief; the heart is sealed from the inside.

A single microsecond of Divine Wrath permanently erases the psychological memory of eighty years of earthly luxury. The currency of the Dunya cannot purchase an umbrella in the Akhirah.

Devils are creatures of "Nar" (fire/smoke); they structurally shatter when they come into contact with the pure "Noor" (light) of the Divine Wahy (revelation).

"So do not invoke with Allah another deity and [thus] be among the punished."
Plain UnderstandingGod issues a severe command directly to the Prophet ﷺ (serving as a warning to everyone else): "Therefore, never pray to or worship any false god alongside Allah, or you yourself will be thrown in with those who are violently punished!"

God addresses His most beloved creation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, with a lethal threat: If even *you* were to commit Shirk (idolatry), you would be destroyed. Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)One of the most tender, intimate verses in the Qur'an. "Yaraka heena taqum" (He sees you when you stand). When the Prophet ﷺ felt isolated, attacked, and abandoned by his society during the day, God comforted him by reminding him of the night. "I see you in your Tahajjud. When the world is asleep and you stand in the dark weeping in prayer, the King's eyes are locked directly upon you." The awareness of the Divine Gaze is the ultimate anesthetic for worldly pain.

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ
"And your movement among those who prostrate."
Plain Understanding"And He proudly watches your movements as you lead the congregation, bowing and prostrating alongside the sincere believers."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Taqallubaka" (your movements/turning). God acknowledges both dimensions of Prophetic worship: the intensely private, solitary prayer in the dark (Verse 218), and the beautiful, synchronized congregational prayer in the light (Verse 219). The Creator cherishes the physical choreography of the believers' submission (Sujud) just as deeply as the theological conviction that drives it.

"As-Samee'" ensures that the violent threats shouted by the pagans are recorded for justice, while the silent tears shed by the Prophet ﷺ are recorded for reward. "Al-'Aleem" confirms that the ultimate outcome of this agonizing mission is already known and guaranteed by Heaven.

هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ
"Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?"
Plain UnderstandingGod returns to utterly destroy the pagans' claim that Muhammad is a sorcerer: "Do you really want Me to tell you exactly who it is that the filthy devils actually come down to visit?"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)God initiates an aggressive counter-interrogation. The pagans accused the Prophet of receiving demonic inspiration. God challenges their sociological intelligence: Look at the moral profile of your fortune-tellers, and look at the moral profile of Muhammad ﷺ. Demonic energy requires a compatible, filthy host; it cannot occupy a sterilized, pure heart.

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍۢ
"They descend upon every sinful liar."
Plain Understanding"The devils only descend upon people who are massive, pathological liars and who are deeply immersed in disgusting sins."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Affakin Atheem" (a fabricator/liar who is drowning in sin). This is the psychological prerequisite for demonic communion. The Jinn only partner with humans who share their affinity for deception and immorality (the Kahin or sorcerer). Since Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was historically known for 40 years as "Al-Ameen" (The Trustworthy) and never touched alcohol or idols, the accusation of demonic inspiration mathematically collapses.
SinThe UnseenProphetic History
يُلْقُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَـٰذِبُونَ
"They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars."
Plain Understanding"These devils try to eavesdrop on the angels and pass down whatever broken fragments they hear to the fortune-tellers. But almost everything these fortune-tellers say is a complete fabrication."
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)Before the Prophethood, Jinn would hover near the lowest heaven, snatch a single word of angelic decree, and race down to the Arabian soothsayers before being hit by a meteor. The human fortune-teller would then mix that single true word with ninety-nine lies to manipulate the public. The Qur'an, conversely, is an unbroken, 100% verified transmission of Absolute Truth.

وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ
"And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them."
Plain Understanding"And as for the arrogant poets you admire so much—it is only the lost, misguided, and deviating people who blindly follow them."
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"Ash-Shu'ara" (The Poets - the title of the Surah). Having destroyed the "sorcerer" accusation, God destroys the "poet" accusation. In ancient Arabia, poets were the media tycoons; they dictated culture, incited wars, and manipulated emotions for profit. God contrasts the Prophet (who leads humanity to reality) with the poet (who seduces the "Ghawoon"—the aimless deviators—into the illusions of emotion and fantasy).

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى كُلِّ وَادٍۢ يَهِيمُونَ
"Do you not see that in every valley they roam"
Plain Understanding"Do you not see how these poets wander aimlessly through every valley of imagination, praising something one day and cursing it the next, driven only by their moods?"
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)"Yaheemoon" (they wander/roam aimlessly). Poetry is unbound by objective truth; it operates strictly on hyperbole. A poet will construct a "valley" of excessive praise for a king who pays him, and the next day construct a "valley" of vile slander against the same king if the check bounces. The Qur'an, conversely, is anchored in the absolute, unchanging, "Mustaqeem" (straight) path of Divine Law. The Prophet is an anchor; the poet is a weather vane.
Human NatureKnowledge & Signs
وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ
"And that they say what they do not do? -"
Plain Understanding"And do you not see that these poets constantly brag about bravery, generosity, and great deeds in their verses, but in real life, they actually do none of those things?"
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)The ultimate hypocrisy of the entertainer. The Arab poets would compose epic verses boasting of slaughtering armies or giving away mountains of gold, while sitting comfortably in their tents doing neither. A Prophet is entirely the opposite: he never commands an action (like charity, prayer, or warfare) without being the absolute first to execute it on the battlefield. A Prophet says what he does; a poet says what sounds good.

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَىَّ مُنقَلَبٍۢ يَنقَلِبُونَ
"Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah much and defend themselves after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned."
Plain Understanding"However, there is an exception: the poets who genuinely believe in God, do good deeds, remember God constantly, and only use their poetry to bravely defend themselves against the oppression of the tyrants. As for those wicked oppressors who mock the truth—very soon, they will find out exactly what kind of horrific, disastrous ending they are returning to!"
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The Surah concludes with a majestic balance of mercy and absolute terror. God exempts the "righteous poets" (like Hassan bin Thabit) who utilized their artistic brilliance not for ego or profit, but as a sword to defend the Prophet ﷺ and the vulnerable believers ("Wantasaru"). Art is not inherently evil; it is a weapon that takes on the morality of the one holding it. The Surah then slams shut with one of the most terrifying threats in the Qur'an: The tyrants who abused the believers will violently, unavoidably collide with the catastrophic consequences ("Munqalab") of their own arrogance. History does not end in the palace; it ends at the Throne.
