Surah Qaf

Qaf • Makkah • 45 Verses
The Awakening. Revealed in Makkah during a time when the arrogant elite fiercely mocked the concept of bodily resurrection. This profound Surah acts as a spiritual defibrillator for the heedless heart. It beautifully connects the miraculous, everyday life cycles of nature directly to the inevitable resurrection of the human soul, bringing the reality of the Hereafter breathtakingly close—closer than our own jugular vein.
Verse 1
قٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْمَجِيدِ
"Qãf. By the glorious Quran!"
Plain Understanding
The Creator opens with a profound oath, swearing by the majestic and honorable Quran, introduced by the single, mysterious Arabic letter Qaf.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
These disjointed letters (Huroof Muqatta'at) were a divine challenge to the linguistic pride of the Quraysh. The Arabs were masters of poetry. God uses their very own alphabet to construct a masterpiece they could never replicate, establishing the Quran's undeniable divine origin.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"His signs are veiled by their very sheer manifestation." The majesty of the Quran is openly available to anyone who listens, yet only the humble, seeking heart can truly witness its glory. The arrogant remain deaf to what is plainly spoken.

Verse 2
"'All will be resurrected,' yet the deniers are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves 'warning of resurrection'. So the disbelievers say, 'This is an astonishing thing!"
Plain Understanding
The elite are genuinely shocked and dismissive that a normal human being from their own city has been chosen to warn them about life after death.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The ego always seeks a miraculous, supernatural spectacle to validate faith. They found it "astonishing" that God would use a humble, soft-spoken human orphan to deliver the greatest truth of the cosmos. True spirituality is finding the Divine in the deeply ordinary.

Verse 3
أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا ۖ ذَٰلِكَ رَجْعٌۢ بَعِيدٌۭ
"'Will we be returned to life,' when we are dead and reduced to dust? Such a return is impossible.'"
Plain Understanding
They view physical resurrection as utterly absurd, unable to comprehend how a decomposed, scattered body could ever be brought back to life.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
Ubayy ibn Khalaf, a staunch enemy of the Prophet ﷺ, would famously bring old, brittle bones to the Prophet, violently crush them into dust, blow the dust into the wind, and mockingly demand: "Who will give life to these after they are completely rotten?"

"We certainly know what the earth consumes of them 'after their death', and with us is a well-preserved Record."
Plain Understanding
God lovingly reassures humanity that not a single atom of their decomposed body is lost to Him; every particle is precisely tracked and recorded in a divine register.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)
"Do not despair over what is lost in the earth, for nothing is ever lost to the Creator of the earth." Even if your worldly efforts and body seem to crumble to dust, your sincere intentions and deeds are permanently preserved with Him.

"In fact, they reject the truth when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state."
Plain Understanding
Their denial is not based on logic, but on a stubborn rejection of the clear truth, leaving their minds trapped in a chaotic, contradictory worldview.
Purification of the Self (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Whoever abandons the light of certainty will be drowned in the ocean of confusion." When you reject the clear truth of revelation, your mind becomes a turbulent, stressful storm of endless, unanswerable anxieties ('Amrin Mareej'). Peace is only found in surrender.

"Have they not then looked at the sky above them: how We built it and adorned it 'with stars', leaving it flawless?"
Plain Understanding
God invites them to simply look up at the magnificent, seamless architecture of the night sky, adorned with brilliant stars without a single crack or defect.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
The desert Arabs were master navigators and intimately familiar with the massive night sky. God appeals to their deep appreciation of the cosmos to prove His capability: He who flawlessly built this massive, uncracked ceiling can easily rebuild your tiny, fragile frame.

"As for the earth, We spread it out and placed upon it firm mountains, and produced in it every type of pleasant plant- "
Plain Understanding
He anchored the expansive earth with heavy, stabilizing mountains and brought forth incredibly diverse, beautiful pairs of vegetation from the soil.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The earth is a profound mirror for the human soul. Just as dead, barren soil produces beautiful, pleasant plants when touched by divine rain, your hardened heart can produce beautiful, blossoming virtues when touched by the tears of sincere repentance.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Bahij" means something that brings profound joy and delight to the eye. God did not just make the earth functional; He made it deeply beautiful. The beauty of the creation is a deliberate, loving invitation to know the beauty of the Creator (Al-Jameel).

Verse 8
تَبْصِرَةًۭ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍۢ مُّنِيبٍۢ
"'all as' an insight and a reminder to every servant who turns 'to Allah'."
Plain Understanding
All of these natural wonders are deliberately placed visual aids, meant to awaken and remind anyone who actively turns their heart back to God.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"The universe is entirely darkness; it is illuminated only by the manifestation of the Real in it." For the one who lovingly turns to God (Muneeb), every tree, mountain, and star ceases to be mere nature and becomes a profound, speaking teacher of theology.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The sky and the mountains are visible to everyone, but they only provide "insight" (Tabsirah) to the "Munib" (the one who turns their heart to God). An arrogant scientist can study the stars for decades and only see gas; a humble servant looks at the stars for a second and sees the Majesty of God. The condition of your heart determines what your eyes see.

Plain Understanding
The Creator sends down pure, deeply blessed rain, using it to miraculously generate lush orchards and essential crops to sustain life.

"and towering palm trees 'loaded' with clustered fruit,"
Plain Understanding
He specifically mentions the majestic, towering date palms, heavily loaded with beautifully layered clusters of sweet fruit.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
Notice the organization: "loaded" Allah does not just provide sustenance haphazardly; He provides it with mathematical precision, beauty, and structure. If His provision of fruit is so meticulously "loaded/layered", His provision of your destiny is even more perfectly arranged.

"'as' a provision for 'Our' servants. And with this 'rain' We revive a lifeless land. Similar is the emergence 'from the graves'."
Plain Understanding
God explicitly connects the life cycle of nature to human resurrection. Just as dead, barren land bursts into life with rain, your physical bodies will effortlessly emerge from the earth.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
To an Arab living in the arid desert, watching a dead, brown valley suddenly erupt into vibrant green life after a single flash flood was the most powerful, undeniable visual proof of "resurrection" they could possibly witness.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
Your spiritual resurrection can happen today. Let the tears of your repentance be the rain that falls on the dead soil of your heart, bringing forth the towering palm trees of unwavering faith.

"Before them, the people of Noah denied 'the truth,' as did the people of the Water-pit, Thamûd,"
Plain Understanding
The perspective shifts to human history, listing ancient, powerful nations who arrogantly denied their prophets just as the Makkans were doing now.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
Allah lists the ancient civilizations to warn the Quraish. "Ashab ar-Rass" were a community who brutally tortured their Prophet and threw him down a dry well to die. They thought they had triumphed, but God utterly destroyed them.
Prophetic HistoryHistorical Warning
Verse 13
وَعَادٌۭ وَفِرْعَوْنُ وَإِخْوَٰنُ لُوطٍۢ
"'Ȃd, Pharaoh, the kinfolk of Lot,"
Plain Understanding
The terrifying roll call of destroyed empires continues, naming civilizations known for their massive architectural strength and military might.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
By listing these specific ancient tribes—many of whom the Quraysh knew intimately from the ruins they passed during their trade routes to Yemen and Syria—God is lovingly but firmly warning them: *Do not let your Makkan pride blind you; you are not stronger than Pharaoh, and he could not escape My justice.*
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
These names were synonymous with absolute, unshakeable power in the ancient world. God groups them together into a single sentence to show how insignificant their earthly empires are in the grand timeline of Divine Justice.

"the residents of the Forest, and the people of Tubba' Each rejected 'their' messenger, so My warning was fulfilled."
Plain Understanding
Every single one of these elite societies chose to mock their divine messengers, and as a direct result, the devastating warning of God's justice was perfectly executed upon them.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The pattern of history is identical because the disease of the ego is identical. Arrogance leads to denial; denial leads to destruction. If you don't break the pattern of arrogance in your own heart, you will inherit the threat (Wa'eed) of those who came before you.

"Were We incapable of creating 'them' the first time? In fact, they are in doubt about 'their' re-creation."
Plain Understanding
A flawless, undeniable logical question: if the Creator experienced absolutely no fatigue or difficulty in creating you from nothing the first time, why is your mind confused by His ability to simply recreate you?
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
This verse refutes the Jewish/pagan belief that God rested on the seventh day because He was "tired." The Creator of energy does not suffer from fatigue. If making you from absolute nothingness didn't tire Him, remaking you from existing dust is effortless.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"The intellect that cannot recognize the miracle of its own daily existence will always demand proof of the Hereafter." Your very heartbeat right now is the proof of His capability.

"Indeed, 'it is' We 'Who' created humankind and 'fully' know what their souls whisper to them, and We are closer to them than 'their' jugular vein."
Plain Understanding
God declares His absolute, intimate knowledge of our deepest, unvoiced anxieties and thoughts, revealing that He is spiritually closer to us than the very vein keeping us alive.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
This is one of the most intimately terrifying and comforting verses in the Quran. The jugular vein keeps you physically alive. God is closer to your reality than the blood pumping through your neck. You cannot hide a single anxious thought, jealous whisper, or pure intention from Him. He knows you better than you know yourself.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"How can you feel alone when the One who created you is closer to you than your own breath?" This verse is terrifying to the hypocrite who hides their sins, but infinitely comforting to the sincere lover of God; He hears the whisper of your pain before your tongue can even articulate it.

Plain Understanding
Not a single syllable leaves human lips without being immediately captured and permanently recorded by these watchful observers.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
If you truly internalized that the King's scribes are documenting every sentence you speak, you would speak much less and reflect much more. The tongue is the steering wheel of the soul; guard it carefully, for its casual harvest can lead to eternal ruin.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The tongue is the most dangerous organ. "Yalfizu" literally means to spit something out. Every idle joke, every piece of gossip, every sarcastic remark is permanently recorded. The spiritually mature person treats their words like expensive currency—speaking only when it adds value to their eternal account.

"'Ultimately,' with the throes of death will come the truth. This is what you were trying to escape!"
Plain Understanding
The agonizing, heavy stupor of death will unavoidably arrive, violently tearing away the illusions of the worldly life and revealing the undeniable spiritual reality you spent your life running from.
Historical Context (Sahih Bukhari)
Even the Prophet ﷺ, the most beloved of all creation, experienced the heavy stupor of death (Sakarat al-Mawt). As he passed away, he wiped his sweating face with water and said, "Indeed, death has its agonies." This is the universal, inescapable doorway that every human ego must pass through.

Plain Understanding
The terrifying, universe-ending Trumpet is sounded, marking the exact arrival of the Final Judgment that the Prophets desperately warned humanity about.

The sound of the Horn shatters the sleep of death. Everything you chased in the Dunya vanishes at this sound. Only the light of Tawheed and the purity of your heart will survive the frequency of this blast.

Plain Understanding
Every single human will be marched into the Divine Court under guard: accompanied by one angel driving them forward, and another serving as an absolute witness to their life's deeds.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)
You are never truly walking alone in the Dunya, and you will not walk alone in the Akhirah. But on that Day, the witnesses cannot be bribed, the driver cannot be outrun, and the destination cannot be avoided.
Divine Wisdom
You are entirely stripped of your worldly entourage. You walk into the Supreme Court under angelic arrest. The "Driver" ensures you cannot escape or hide, and the "Witness" carries the exact book of your deeds (recorded in verses 17-18). It is a scene of absolute, terrifying vulnerability.

"'It will be said to the denier,' 'You were totally heedless of this. Now We have lifted this veil of yours, so Today your sight is sharp!'"
Plain Understanding
The devastating realization occurs: the material world was just a blurry, distracting veil. That veil is now violently ripped away, leaving the soul with terrifyingly sharp, 20/20 spiritual vision.
Purification of the Self (Ibn Ata'illah)
"The people of this world are asleep; when they die, they wake up." Do not wait for death to lift the veil of heedlessness (Ghaflah). Lift it today through sincere prayer and deep remembrance, so that when your sight becomes sharp in the Next World, you are looking at a beautiful reality, not a terrifying one.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The Dunya is a dream, heavily veiled by desires, entertainment, and ego. Death is the violent awakening. Suddenly, angels, heaven, hell, and the consequences of your sins are no longer abstract theology; they are sharper and more real than anything you ever saw on earth. Do not wait for death to remove the veil; remove it today through repentance and remembrance (Dhikr).

Plain Understanding
The angel specifically assigned to track the soul steps forward in the Divine Court, formally presenting the flawless, complete record of the individual's earthly life.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
The recording angel (Qareen) serves as the ultimate, undeniable witness against the soul, confirming before the Creator that every single deed, no matter how small, has been preserved without alteration or bias.

A firm, terrifying divine command is issued to the angels, ordering them to cast the deeply arrogant, unyielding denier directly into the Fire.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
This severe command addresses the extreme hostility of Makkan tyrants like Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, who obstinately and violently rejected the truth despite fully recognizing its beauty and authenticity in their hearts.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
"Kaffar" is intensely ungrateful, and "Aneed" is stubbornly arrogant. The punishment is not for someone who was confused; it is for someone who saw the Truth clearly but let their ego block their submission. Arrogance is the fuel of Hell.

Verse 25
مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍۢ مُّرِيبٍ
"withholder of good, transgressor, and doubter,"
Plain Understanding
The specific spiritual crimes of the condemned are listed: greedily hoarding wealth, violently overstepping moral boundaries, and constantly harboring deep spiritual doubt.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Doubt is a disease that paralyzes the limbs from doing good." The one who greedily withholds wealth is almost always a doubter, because true, freely-given generosity requires absolute certainty in the Unseen Provider.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Notice the spiritual pathology. First, he prevents good (greed). Second, he acts aggressively against others (oppression). Third, to justify his greed and oppression, he becomes a "Mureeb"—a cynic who mocks faith and sows doubt to avoid accountability. The ultimate, unforgivable crime is revealed: associating temporary, worldly powers or personal desires with the Eternal Creator, culminating in a severe consequence.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)

"One's 'devilish' associate will say, 'Our Lord! I did not make them transgress. Rather, they were far astray 'on their own'.'"
Plain Understanding
In a tragic, humiliating betrayal, the demonic companion who whispered evil to them in life entirely disowns them, testifying that the human willingly chose the path of darkness.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The Quraysh elite constantly blamed external factors—their ancestors, their society, or even destiny—for their rejection of Islam. On Judgment Day, even Satan strips them of their excuses, refusing to carry the blame for their conscious, arrogant choices.

Plain Understanding
The Creator forcefully shuts down their pathetic bickering, reminding them that all necessary warnings and clear guidance were openly delivered during their earthly lives.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The courtroom of God is a place of absolute Majesty (Jalal). It is not a place for petty bickering or shifting the blame. He sent the Prophets, He sent the Books, and He gave you intellect. The blame lies squarely on the one who ignored the warning.

Plain Understanding
The divine decree of justice is absolute and perfectly fair; God never alters His promises, nor does He ever punish a single soul for a crime it did not commit.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"His justice is flawless, but it is His mercy that you must rely upon." He is never unjust, but it is our own hands that author our ruin when we deliberately ignore His compassionate warnings.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)

Historical Context (Sahih Bukhari)
The Prophet ﷺ described that Hell will greedily ask for more until the Lord places His 'Foot' over it, at which point it will shrink into itself and cry, "Enough, enough, by Your Glory!" This vividly illustrates both the terrifying nature of the Fire and the supreme, overpowering majesty of the Creator.

The scene beautifully and mercifully shifts to the believers. The lush, eternal gardens of Paradise are brought intimately close to comfort the deeply reverent souls.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Just as Paradise is brought physically near to them in the Akhirah, they brought their hearts spiritually near to God in the Dunya. The proximity of your eternal reward is simply a reflection of the proximity of your heart during your life.

Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"The sign of a truly returning heart (Awwab) is that it finds its greatest joy in obedience, not merely out of the fear of Hell, but out of a profound, sweeping love for the Commander."
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)

Plain Understanding
Their greatest virtue is highlighted: they maintained a deep, trembling reverence for the Most Merciful God even when He was completely unseen to their physical eyes.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
The early believers in Makkah endured horrific physical torture for a God they could not physically see. Their 'unseen' faith was so incredibly pure and resilient that it outweighed the visible, physical power of their oppressors, earning them this majestic eternal welcome.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
To fear "The Most Merciful" (Ar-Rahman) is the ultimate paradox of love. You don't fear Him because He is a tyrant; you fear Him because you love His Mercy so deeply that you are terrified of disappointing Him or being veiled from Him. The "Qalb Muneeb" (turning heart) is the only currency accepted at the gates of Heaven.

The Quraysh were wealthy merchants, but they were not the architectural giants of 'Ad or the rock-carvers of Thamud. God reminds them that if sheer physical strength and global exploration could not save those massive empires from divine justice, the elite of Makkah are utterly defenseless.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
Many people hear the Quran, but their hearts are absent, wandering in the marketplace or consumed by anxiety. To receive the "Dhikra" (Reminder), you must bring your full presence (Shaheed) to the moment. A dead heart cannot absorb living water.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
Power and geographic dominance do not grant immunity from Divine Law. The ruins of ancient castles are silent teachers pleading with modern man: "We had more wealth than you, yet we are dust. Humble yourselves before the Eternal."

Verse 37
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُۥ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌۭ
"Surely in this is a reminder for whoever has a 'mindful' heart and lends an attentive ear."
Plain Understanding
These profound cosmic and historical realities are only beneficial to the one whose heart is alive, awake, and deeply, actively listening to the truth.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"The ears only hear the physical sound, but the heart hears the divine intent." A dead heart can memorize the entire Quran and remain unchanged, while a living heart can hear a single verse and be transformed forever.

Verse 38
"Indeed, We created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six Days, and We were not 'even' touched with fatigue.2"
Plain Understanding
A majestic declaration of infinite power: God effortlessly constructed the entire universe without experiencing even a fraction of exhaustion or weakness.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
This verse specifically refutes the belief held by surrounding religious communities—whom the Quraysh occasionally consulted—that God rested on the seventh day because He was tired. Allah explicitly denies experiencing any fatigue (Lughoob), cementing His absolute perfection and untiring capacity to resurrect the dead.

Verse 39
"So be patient 'O Prophet' with what they say. And glorify the praises of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset."
Plain Understanding
In the face of painful mockery, the Prophet ﷺ is tenderly advised to wrap his heart in patience and find his healing through glorifying God at the edges of the day.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
When the tongues of the creation abuse you, heal yourself with the praises of the Creator. Tasbeeh (glorification) before sunrise and sunset bookends your day with divine light, protecting your fragile heart from the darkness of human cruelty.

Verse 40
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَأَدْبَـٰرَ ٱلسُّجُودِ
"And glorify Him during part of the night and after the prayers."
Plain Understanding
Continue this beautiful, intimate connection by praising Him in the quiet depths of the night and immediately following your formal acts of worship.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
Before the five daily prayers were made obligatory during the Night Journey (Isra wal Mi'raj), the early Muslims found their immense spiritual strength through praying in the deep silence of the night (Qiyam al-Layl). It was the secret, unseen fuel that allowed them to endure the vicious Makkan persecution during the day.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata’illah)
The night (Qiyam al-Layl) is the secret meeting time of lovers. When the noisy world goes to sleep, the true seeker stands in the silence to speak with the King. And keeping the tongue moist with Dhikr after the prayer extends the light of the prayer into the rest of your day.

Verse 41
وَٱسْتَمِعْ يَوْمَ يُنَادِ ٱلْمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٍۢ قَرِيبٍۢ
"And listen! On the Day the caller will call out from a near place,"
Plain Understanding
Pay very close attention, for a massive, universe-altering event is approaching: the Day when the angel will sound the trumpet from a location so close that every soul will hear it equally.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The "Caller" is the Archangel Israfil standing upon the Rock of Jerusalem (the closest point on earth to the heavens). The sound of his horn will be so universally piercing that every single human being on earth will feel like the shout is coming from right next to their own ear.
The UnseenWarning
Verse 42
يَوْمَ يَسْمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيْحَةَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُرُوجِ
"the Day all will hear the 'mighty' Blast in 'all' truth, that will be the Day of emergence 'from the graves'."
Plain Understanding
That inescapable, shattering blast will pierce every ear with absolute reality, signaling the exact moment the dead must rise and emerge from the earth.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
They ignored the quiet, gentle call of the Prophets in the Dunya, so they will be forced to obey the terrifying, deafening call of the Angel in the Akhirah. Surrender willingly today so you are not dragged out in terror tomorrow.

Verse 43
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْنَا ٱلْمَصِيرُ
"It is certainly We Who give life and cause death. And to Us is the final return."
Plain Understanding
The Creator reasserts His absolute monopoly over existence: He alone initiates life, He alone terminates it, and to Him alone is the inevitable, final journey back.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Since He is your origin and your final destination, let Him also be your companion along the journey."

"'Beware of' the Day the earth will split open, letting them rush forth. That will be an easy gathering for Us."
Plain Understanding
The ground will violently crack open, and humanity will rapidly stream out of their graves. Reassembling billions of souls is incredibly simple and effortless for the Almighty.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will be the first one for whom the earth splits open." The imagery is like seeds instantly sprouting from cracked soil after rain, emphasizing how effortlessly God executes this massive logistical event.

Verse 45
"We know best what they say. And you 'O Prophet' are not 'there' to compel them 'to believe'. So remind with the Quran 'only' those who fear My warning."
Plain Understanding
God lovingly relieves the Prophet ﷺ of his heavy burden: you are not a dictator over their hearts. Simply share the beautiful words of the Quran, and it will naturally attract those who have soft, reverent hearts.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
The Prophet ﷺ would grieve intensely and blame himself when his beloved people rejected his message. This final verse is a soothing divine embrace, reminding him that his only job is to deliver the reminder. The opening of the heart is entirely the business of God.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
The true spiritual guide does not force or compel the disciple; he merely holds up the mirror of the Quran. Those who already have a spark of light in their hearts will naturally recognize the Light in the Book.
