Surah Al-Qiyamah

The Resurrection • Makkah • 40 Verses
The Awakening of the Conscience. Revealed during a time of intense mockery in Makkah, where the arrogant elite laughed at the concept of accountability. This Surah shatters their delusion, guiding the reader from the cosmic destruction of the universe down into the deeply intimate, terrifyingly personal reality of the soul leaving the collarbone, urging the heart to awaken before its time expires.
Verse 1
"I do swear by the Day of Judgment!"
Plain Understanding
The revelation opens with a majestic, undeniable oath by Allah, swearing by the absolute reality of the Final Day, when all souls will stand to account.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The pagan Quraysh considered death to be the absolute end of existence. They viewed the Prophet's ﷺ warnings of a resurrection as absurd mythology. The Creator begins by swearing by the very Day they mocked, firmly establishing it as the inescapable foundation of reality.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
The Day of Judgment is merely the unveiling of the reality you are already living in." Do not wait for the physical destruction of the universe to recognize the sovereignty of God; let the Day of Judgment begin in your heart today.

Verse 2
"And I do swear by the self-reproaching soul!"
Plain Understanding
And Allah swears by the human conscience—the inner voice that constantly blames and criticizes you when you do wrong.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The soul has stages. The lowest commands to evil (Ammarah). The highest is perfectly at peace (Mutma'innah). But this verse swears by the middle stage: the 'Lawwamah'—the struggling, bleeding, self-correcting heart. Allah swears by your guilty conscience because your internal pain over your sins is the very proof of your spiritual life. Guilt is a divine gift; it means your spiritual heart is still alive and fighting the ego.
Divine Wisdom (Al-Jilani)
Your internal guilt is a private Day of Judgment happening within you. If you allow your 'self-reproaching soul' to judge you today, you will be spared the terror of the Judgment tomorrow.

Verse 3
"Do people think We cannot reassemble their bones?"
Plain Understanding
A profound question addressing human arrogance: does mankind truly believe that the decay of physical bones poses a challenge to the Creator who made them from nothing?
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
This verse was revealed directly in response to 'Adi ibn Rabi'ah (a neighbor of the Prophet ﷺ) and Abu Jahl. They would famously bring old, brittle, decayed bones to the Prophet ﷺ, crush them into dust in their hands, blow them into the wind, and mockingly ask, "Who will give life to these after they are rotten?"

"Yes 'indeed'! We are 'most' capable of restoring 'even' their very fingertips."
Plain Understanding
Absolutely! Allah is not only able to assemble large bones, but He is able to perfectly reconstruct the intricate, microscopic details of your very fingertips.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
If the Creator pays such meticulous, perfect attention to the microscopic ridges of your fingertips—which are merely the exterior shell of your body—how intimately do you think He knows the intricate, hidden movements and secrets of your heart?
Divine Wisdom
Fingertips (fingerprints) are the ultimate symbol of unique individual identity. Allah is saying: I will not just resurrect a generic human body; I will restore your exact, unique, undeniable identity down to the microscopic ridges on your fingers to hold you personally accountable.

Verse 5
"Still people want to deny what is yet to come,"
Plain Understanding
The root cause of their denial is exposed: The truth is, man doesn't deny resurrection because of lack of evidence; he denies it because he wants a free pass to keep sinning, without the burden of future accountability.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
Sin is not merely a failing of the limbs; it is a willful blindness of the heart." To maintain the pleasure of their desires today, they must actively force themselves to deny the reality of tomorrow.

Verse 6
"asking 'mockingly', 'When is this Day of Judgment?'"
Plain Understanding
In their arrogance, they attempt to deflect the Prophet's ﷺ warning by sarcastically demanding the exact date and time of the Apocalypse.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
The chiefs of Makkah utilized mockery as a defense mechanism. By asking "When is it?", they sought to belittle the Prophet ﷺ and make the believers feel foolish for preparing for an unseen reality.

Verse 7
"But when the sight is stunned,"
Plain Understanding
The mocking questions will instantly vanish when the terrifying events of that Day actually begin, leaving their eyes wide open in absolute, paralyzed shock.
Divine Wisdom
In the Dunya, the eye is distracted by glittering illusions. On that Day, the veil is ripped away, and the eye is paralyzed by the sudden, overwhelming exposure to Absolute Reality. The mocking stops instantly.

Verse 8
"and the moon is dimmed,"
Plain Understanding
And the moon completely loses its light and becomes eclipsed in total darkness.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
The beautiful, consistent light of the moon that humans rely on for sanity, timekeeping, and navigation will completely break down. The physical universe is dismantled to make way for the spiritual accounting..

"and the sun and the moon are brought together"
Plain Understanding
The sun and the moon, previously kept in perfect separate orbits, are violently crashed together.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
The Dunya operates on the illusion of stability—the sun always rises, the moon always returns. When Allah merges them, He is destroying the illusion of physical permanence. Do not anchor your heart to a sun that will be folded up; anchor it to the Light that created the sun.

"on that Day one will cry, 'Where is the escape?'"
Plain Understanding
Stripped of all earthly power and facing the collapse of the universe, the arrogant human will desperately look for any place to hide.
Divine Wisdom
You spent your whole life escaping into distractions, escaping into wealth, escaping into sleep. But when world, as you know it, is collapsing, the illusion of "escaping" is permanently shattered.

Verse 11
"But no! There will be no refuge."
Plain Understanding
The divine decree drops with terrifying absolute finality: there are no fortresses, no wealth, and no tribes that can shield a soul on this Day.
Historical Context
"Wazar" refers to an impenetrable mountain fortress that Arabs would retreat to during warfare. Allah strips away the concept of physical sanctuary.

Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
There is no distance between you and Him that requires a journey, and there is no veil between you and Him that requires tearing." You are running toward Him right now. The Day of Judgment is simply the moment you are forced to stop running and finally look at where you have arrived.

"All will then be informed of what they have sent forth and left behind."
Plain Understanding
Every soul will receive a comprehensive, inescapable audit of every single deed they accomplished in life, as well as the legacy of good or evil they left behind after death.
Divine Wisdom
You are not just judged for your actions; you are judged for your omissions ("left behind"). The good you intended but delayed out of laziness, and the evil traditions you started that continued after your death, will all be laid bare.

Verse 14
"In fact, people will testify against their own souls"
Plain Understanding
Actually, the human being doesn't even need a report; his own soul is a crystal-clear witness against itself.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Deep down, beneath the layers of ego, justification, and societal performance, you already know exactly who you are. The truth of your sincerity or hypocrisy is intimately known to you. The Day of Judgment simply brings your own internal witness to the surface.

Verse 15
"despite the excuses they come up with."
Plain Understanding
No matter how eloquently the tongue tries to invent excuses or justify past mistakes, the soul's internal truth cannot be hidden.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Do not try to justify yourself to the One who knows your secrets before you even speak them." True repentance is dropping your excuses at the door of His mercy. If you cling to your justifications, you are clinging to the very chains that bind you.

"Do not rush your tongue trying to memorize 'a revelation of' the Quran."
Plain Understanding
Allah interrupts the narrative to comfort the Prophet ﷺ: Do not urgently move your tongue to repeat the Quran while Jibreel is reciting it out of fear you will forget it.
Historical Context (Sahih Bukhari / Ibn Abbas)
Whenever the Angel Jibril descended with revelation, the Prophet ﷺ would experience immense spiritual gravity. Out of his sheer, desperate love for the message and his intense fear of forgetting even a single syllable, he would rapidly move his lips, trying to memorize the words simultaneously as Jibril spoke them. Allah gently interrupts the revelation to soothe his anxious heart.

The Creator lovingly takes full responsibility. He promises the Prophet ﷺ that Allah Himself will gather the words securely in his heart and ensure it is recited flawlessly.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
Spiritual knowledge cannot be violently grasped by the anxiety of the intellect; it must be patiently received by the stillness of the heart. Allah is telling His beloved: Rest. Do not rely on your own effort to hold the Light. I am the One who gave it to you, and I am the One who will protect it within you.

Plain Understanding
So when Jibreel finishes reciting it to you, only then should you follow along and recite it.
Divine Wisdom
This establishes the etiquette of learning: silent, receptive listening must precede active speaking. You cannot absorb the majesty of the Truth if you are busy talking over it.

Historical Context (
This explicitly validates the Prophet's ﷺ Sunnah. Allah did not just give him the text; Allah gave him the explanation (Bayan) of the text. His actions and rulings are divinely guided clarifications of the Quran.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"True understanding is a light that Allah casts into the heart, not merely facts gathered by the mind." Just as the words themselves are a divine gift, the comprehension of those words is an equally magnificent gift from the Sustainer.

Verse 20
"But no! In fact, you love this fleeting world,"
Plain Understanding
Allah returns to addressing the deniers: The real reason you deny Judgment is because you are deeply, addictively in love with the immediate, fleeting pleasures of this world.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The word 'Al-'Ajilah' literally means 'the hasty' or 'the immediate'. The pagans of Makkah mocked the Hereafter simply because it required patience. They demanded immediate gratification—wealth, status, and pleasure right now—refusing to invest in anything they could not physically see and hold.

Verse 21
"and neglect the Hereafter."
Plain Understanding
Because their hearts are entirely consumed by the temporary world, they completely abandon and ignore the eternal reality that is rapidly approaching them.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The heart is like a single vessel; it cannot hold the love of the Dunya and the love of the Akhirah simultaneously. The more fiercely you grip the immediate world, the more you are forced to drop the eternal one. You must choose what you will carry.

Plain Understanding
The source of their radiant glow is revealed: they have been granted the ultimate, supreme reward of physically gazing upon the majestic beauty of their Creator.
Historical Context (Sahih Bukhari)
The Sahaba once asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He gently replied, "Do you have any difficulty seeing the full moon on a cloudless night?" When they said no, he assured them they would see their Lord just as clearly. This is the ultimate comfort for the believers enduring torture in Makkah.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"If you spend your days in the Dunya seeking His Face through your prayers, your tears, and your charity, He will illuminate your face in the Akhirah by allowing you to look upon His." The reward is the exact perfection of the effort.

"And 'other' faces will be gloomy,"
Plain Understanding
In terrifying contrast, the faces of those who chased the temporary world will be dark, intensely pale, and distorted with absolute despair.
Divine Wisdom
They frowned at the truth in the Dunya (like Al-Walid in Surah Abasa), so their faces are permanently locked into a scowl of despair in the Akhirah. The body in the Next Life physically manifests the theology of the heart.

Verse 26
"But no! 'Beware of the day' when the soul reaches the collar bone 'as it leaves',"
Plain Understanding
The narrative shifts from the massive Day of Judgment: Stop denying! Think of the exact moment of death, when your soul is being pulled up through your throat and reaches your collarbones.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The Arabs deeply feared the physical agony of death. The 'Taraqi' (collarbones/throat) represents the absolute final threshold of human life. When the soul reaches this physical point, the doors of repentance are permanently sealed shut, and the unseen realm becomes visible.
Life & DeathWarning
Verse 27
"and it will be said, 'Is there any healer 'who can save this life'?'"
Plain Understanding
In a moment of absolute panic, the family surrounding the dying person will desperately cry out for any doctor, medicine, or spiritual healer who can stop the inevitable.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
The tragedy of this moment is the final shattering of the illusion of earthly power. You spend your life relying on wealth, doctors, and connections to save you. But when the divine command arrives at the collarbone, the wealthiest king and the poorest beggar are equally powerless. The only true Healer is the One calling you back.

Verse 28
"And the dying person realizes it is 'their' time to depart,"
Plain Understanding
At this excruciating threshold, the dying individual finally accepts the absolute truth: they are permanently separating from everything they ever loved in the worldly life.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Do not attach your heart to that which you must eventually part with." The agony of death is not merely physical; it is the agonizing, tearing away of the soul from the temporary things it falsely worshipped. If you detach your heart from the Dunya while you are alive, your departure will be a peaceful transition, not a violent tearing.

Verse 29
"and 'then' their feet are tied together 'in a shroud'."
Plain Understanding
The final physical state of the human body is described: the life leaves the limbs, the legs twist together in the spasms of death, and they are ultimately bound in the burial shroud.
Purification of the Self
This carries a profound dual meaning. Physically, the body enters rigor mortis or death spasms. Spiritually, "the leg of the Dunya" (which is ending) intertwines with "the leg of the Akhirah" (which is beginning). The two worlds collide in the consciousness of the dying soul.
Life & Death
Verse 30
"On that day they will be driven to your Lord 'alone'."
Plain Understanding
The earthly journey completely terminates, and the soul is firmly, inevitably driven straight into the presence of its Lord for judgment.
Divine Wisdom
"Masaq" implies being driven or herded, like cattle. You spent your life believing you were the captain of your own ship, steering where you pleased. In death, the illusion of control is shattered. You are driven to the King, willing or not.

Verse 31
"This denier neither believed nor prayed,"
Plain Understanding
Allah exposes the reality of the arrogant soul that was just driven to Him: in life, they completely refused to accept the truth internally, and refused to bow their body in prayer externally.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
These concluding verses specifically detail the behavior of Abu Jahl. He was the archetype of Makkan arrogance. He violently rejected the Qur'an and actively mocked the physical act of prostration, claiming a nobleman would never put his face in the dirt.
Divine Wisdom
Returning to the root of his failure. Faith (Saddaqa) is the internal state of the heart; Prayer (Salla) is the physical manifestation of that faith. He was bankrupt in both theology and action.

Verse 32
"but persisted in denial and turned away,"
Plain Understanding
Instead of humbling themselves, actively labeled the divine truth as a lie, and physically turned his back on the Prophet ﷺ.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Notice the sequence of the disease: first, the heart denies the unseen truth (Kadhdhaba), and immediately, the body turns away from the physical obedience (Tawalla). The corruption of the outer limbs is always a direct result of the corruption of the inner heart.

Historical Context (As-Suyuti)
The word 'Yatamatta' describes a specific, arrogant strut. Abu Jahl would literally swagger through the streets of Makkah, puffed up with pride after insulting the Prophet ﷺ, seeking the applause of his tribe. He was entirely blind to the cosmic doom hanging over his head.

A direct, severe, and terrifying threat is issued to the arrogant: absolute misery and destruction are drawing close to you.
Historical Context (Sahih Bukhari)
The Prophet ﷺ actually confronted Abu Jahl. He grabbed the wealthy tyrant by the collar of his cloak, pulled him close, and fearlessly repeated these exact words to his face. Abu Jahl sneered back, "Are you threatening me, Muhammad? Neither you nor your Lord can do anything to me." Shortly after, this verse was revealed, confirming the Prophet's ﷺ terrifying warning. A few years later, Abu Jahl was killed at Badr.

"Do people think they will be left without purpose?"
Plain Understanding
A profound philosophical question to humanity: do you genuinely believe you were created to simply eat, sleep, and die without any ultimate meaning, accountability, or divine purpose?
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Allah did not create you for the world; He created the world for you, and He created you for Himself." To believe you have no ultimate purpose is to severely insult the meticulous artistry of the Creator.

From that humble drop, the Creator actively shaped, developed, and perfectly engineered the complex anatomy of the human being in the darkness of the womb.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
If Allah took such intricate, beautiful care to shape your physical body when you were nothing but a clot in the dark, why do you doubt His ability to care for your soul when you are struggling in the darkness of the Dunya? Trust the One who built you.

And from this singular origin, He deliberately generated the profound, complimentary duality of male and female to ensure the continuation of life.

Blind nature does not calculate perfect complementary pairs. The existence of male and female implies an active, purposeful Will. Design requires a Designer.

Plain Understanding
The Surah concludes with an undeniable, loving rhetorical question: is the Architect who flawlessly built you from nothing somehow incapable of simply rebuilding you from the dust?
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
The early believers would physically respond to this verse. When the Prophet ﷺ or the Sahaba (like Ibn Abbas) would recite this final verse, they would instinctively reply out loud: "Subhanaka, fa bala!" (Glory be to You, yes indeed!) This active, verbal confirmation sealed the truth of the resurrection deeply into their hearts.
