Surah Quraysh

The Tribe of Quraysh • Makkah • 4 Verses
The Blessing of Stability.Revealed in early Makkah, this Surah reminded the Prophet’s tribe of the profound peace and economic prosperity they enjoyed while the surrounding world was in turmoil. It is a gentle, powerful call to recognize the Provider behind our daily comforts.
Verse 1
لِإِيلَـٰفِ قُرَيْشٍ
"˹At least˺ for ˹the favour of˺ making Quraysh habitually secure—"
Plain Understanding
We often take our most consistent blessings for granted. Here, attention is drawn to the simple, rhythmic security that the tribe of Quraysh enjoyed, inviting us to reflect on our own baseline of safety and the unseen grace that sustains it.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
Classical exegetes seamlessly connect this Surah to the preceding one, Surah Al-Fil. Because the divine decree destroyed the invading army of Abraha, the Quraysh were spared annihilation and allowed to maintain their esteemed status and security in the Arabian Peninsula.

Verse 2
إِۦلَـٰفِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيْفِ
"secure in their trading caravan ˹to Yemen˺ in the winter and ˹Syria˺ in the summer—"
Plain Understanding
The rhythm of their livelihood—traveling south to Yemen in winter and north to Syria in summer—was uninterrupted and protected. It is a reminder that the predictable cycles of our own lives, our incomes, and our safe travels are continuous manifestations of care.
Divine Wisdom
Do not let the sheer predictability of a blessing blind you to the presence of the Blesser. The mundane routine itself—waking up safe, traveling to work, having the means to provide for a family—is a quiet, daily miracle that warrants immense gratitude.

Verse 3
فَلْيَعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّ هَـٰذَا ٱلْبَيْتِ
"let them worship the Lord of this ˹Sacred˺ House,"
Plain Understanding
The natural, dignified response to realizing how deeply we are provided for is humble devotion. The call is beautifully specific: direct your gratitude into the worship of the Lord of the Kaaba, the very epicenter of the peace you enjoy.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Imam Al-Ghazali teaches that true gratitude (shukr) is not merely uttering praise, but utilizing the blessing in a way that pleases the Giver. The security and wealth of the Quraysh were provisions meant to free their hearts for focused worship, not to distract them with worldly accumulation.

Verse 4
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍۢ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍۭ
"Who has fed them against hunger and made them secure against fear."
Plain Understanding
The two greatest, most primal anxieties of the human condition are addressed here: the physical ache of starvation and the psychological terror of harm. When these burdens are lifted from a society, the soul is given the tranquility it needs to seek its Creator.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"He has guaranteed your provision and asked you to worship Him. Do not neglect what He has asked of you because of what He has guaranteed for you." The fulfillment of our physical needs is the very platform upon which our spiritual journey is meant to be built.
