Surah Al-Qadr

The Night of Glory • Makkah • 5 Verses
The Descent of Ultimate Peace. High above the noise of a deeply divided and transactional Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ sat entirely alone in the dark, silent cave of Hira, desperate for meaning. He could not have known that in this pitch-black isolation, the heavens were about to shatter open. Surah Al-Qadr is the majestic, breathtaking announcement of that very night—the moment the Divine intimately intersected with the human timeline. It speaks of a night so heavy with majesty, grace, and descending angels that normal time is suspended. It is a profound spiritual anchor, teaching the exhausted soul that a single moment of genuine, blinding sincerity with the Creator is worth more than an entire lifetime of empty, worldly pursuits.
Verse 1
Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory.
Plain Understanding
The Divine majestically announces the arrival of the greatest gift ever given to humanity, sent down in a single, transformative night that forever changed the trajectory of the world.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
The classical scholars note that the entirety of the Quran was sent down from the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) to the lowest heaven on Laylat al-Qadr, before being revealed piecemeal to the Prophet ﷺ over the next 23 years. This monumental cosmic event shifted human history from an era of profound spiritual ignorance into the illuminating age of revelation.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Just as the Quran descended into the darkness of the physical world on this specific night, the light of divine guidance must purposefully descend into the darkness of your own heart. Your personal 'Laylat al-Qadr' is the exact moment you finally lower your ego and allow His word to fully enter and transform your inner state.

Verse 2
And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is?
Plain Understanding
The human mind is gently reminded of its absolute inability to fully comprehend the sheer magnitude and spiritual gravity of this hidden, sacred night.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
The rhetorical phrase "And what will make you realize...?" (Wa ma adraka...) is consistently utilized throughout the Quran to indicate an event or reality of incomprehensible majesty. It purposefully elevates the listener's anticipation, signaling that what is about to be described completely defies normal human measurement or expectation.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"He veiled the Night of Power so that you would seek it, just as He veiled His greatest name so that you would invoke Him with all His names." The beauty of the unknown is that it prevents spiritual complacency. The veil forces the heart to stay awake, searching for Him with a desperate, beautiful sincerity.

Verse 3
The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months.
Plain Understanding
A single night of true, pure connection with the Divine is infinitely more valuable than a lifetime—over eighty-three years—spent completely absorbed in the heedless pursuit of worldly illusions.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The Prophet ﷺ was once shown the lifespans of previous nations, which stretched over hundreds of years. He felt a deep, empathetic sorrow for his own community (Ummah), who had much shorter lives, fearing they could not achieve as many good deeds. In response, God lovingly gifted them this single night—mathematically superior to an entire lifetime of worship—out of sheer grace.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
Spiritual time is not measured by the mechanical ticking of a clock, but by the intense presence of the heart. One single moment of absolute, blinding sincerity before God is heavier on the divine scales than a thousand months of empty, distracted rituals performed out of habit.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"How often is a long life devoid of beneficial fruits, and a short life filled with profound blessings." Seek depth in your spiritual moments, not merely length.

Verse 4
That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter.
Plain Understanding
The heavens literally touch the earth, as countless angels—led by Gabriel—cascade down to witness the tears of the believers and perfectly execute the divine decrees for the coming year.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
"The Spirit" (Ar-Ruh) specifically refers to the Archangel Gabriel (Jibril). The traditions explain that so many angels descend on this single night that they actually outnumber the physical pebbles on the earth. They crowd the earthly realm, bringing down blessings, mercy, and the exact, precise decrees—including sustenance, lifespan, and trials—for every single person for the upcoming year.
Purification of the Self (Ibn Arabi)
The descent of the angels is a descent of profound spiritual intimacy. When your inner heart is finally purified of hatred, malice, and worldly obsession, you create a pristine landing space for these pure beings. They descend upon the tranquil heart just as softly as they descend upon the quiet earth.

Verse 5
It is all peace until the break of dawn.
Plain Understanding
The night is wrapped in a blanket of absolute, unbroken safety, offering a sanctuary of perfect spiritual stillness that heals the anxious soul until the morning light finally breaks.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
The word "Salam" (peace) indicates that on this specific night, spiritual evil and demonic influence are completely paralyzed. It is a night entirely free from affliction, where the descending angels constantly greet the worshiping believers with invocations of peace until the very moment the physical sun begins to rise.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
True peace (Salam) is the ultimate cessation of the exhausting inner war between your worldly desires and your soul's calling. On this night, if you surrender completely, the desperate battle within you finally ends, leaving a profound, quiet dawn radiating within your chest.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"He makes the dawn of relief break only after the darkest part of the night of despair." Just as the physical night must inevitably end in the beautiful light of Fajr, your worldly trials will eventually end in the dawn of His perfect, everlasting peace.
