وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ • مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ • وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ • إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌۭ يُوحَىٰ
"By the stars when they fade away! Your fellow man is neither misguided nor astray. Nor does he speak of his own whims. It is only a revelation sent down ˹to him˺."
Plain UnderstandingGod swears by the descending or fading stars to definitively clear the Prophet of any accusation of madness, misguidance, or self-interest, confirming that every word he brings regarding the unseen is pure divine revelation, free from human ego.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The Quraysh constantly accused the Prophet ﷺ of fabricating the Qur'an or speaking out of a desire for tribal leadership. God intimately calls him "your companion" (sahibukum) to remind the Makkans that Muhammad ﷺ had lived among them his entire life, known entirely for his flawless honesty (Al-Amin), making their sudden accusations of madness absurd.
Purification of the Self (Al-Tustari)The star fading in the light of the dawn symbolizes the human ego and intellect surrendering to the overwhelming light of Divine Revelation. The Prophet ﷺ speaks from a place of absolute spiritual purity; his heart is completely emptied of personal whim (Hawa) and filled entirely by the Divine Will.

"He has been taught by one ˹angel˺ of mighty power and great perfection, who once rose to ˹his˺ true form while on the highest point above the horizon... at the Lote Tree of the most extreme limit ˹in the seventh heaven˺... The ˹Prophet’s˺ sight never wandered, nor did it overreach. He certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs."

It was transmitted by the Archangel Jibril (Gabriel), a being of immense power who appeared to the Prophet in his awe-inspiring true form, leading up to the miraculous Night Journey where the Prophet witnessed the greatest unseen realities of the cosmos.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir / Al-Tabari)This passage documents two monumental visual encounters with Jibril in his true, unmediated angelic form. The first was at the "clear horizon" in Makkah (Al-Batha), where Jibril filled the entire sky with six hundred wings. The second was during the Mi'raj (Ascension) at the *Sidrat al-Muntaha* (The Farthest Lote Tree), a cosmic boundary beyond which no created being, not even angels, can pass without divine permission.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)"The sight never wandered, nor did it overreach." This is the ultimate description of perfect spiritual etiquette (Adab). Even when presented with the unimaginable, overwhelming splendors of the heavenly realms and the Lote Tree, the Prophet's ﷺ heart and gaze remained perfectly focused and disciplined. He was not distracted by the phenomenal beauty of the creation, because his heart was locked entirely upon the Creator.

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـَٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى • ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌۭ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
"To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth so that He may reward the evildoers according to what they did, and reward the good-doers with the finest reward—those who avoid major sins and shameful deeds, despite ˹stumbling on˺ minor sins. Surely your Lord is infinite in forgiveness. He knew well what would become of you as He created you from the earth and while you were ˹still˺ fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not ˹falsely˺ elevate yourselves. He knows best who is ˹truly˺ righteous."
Plain UnderstandingGod's justice is perfect, but His mercy is vast. He does not demand absolute, flawless perfection from humanity. True "good-doers" are those who strive to avoid major destructive sins, even if they occasionally slip into minor errors. Because God crafted us from dirt and knows our inherent weaknesses perfectly, we must never arrogantly claim purity or boast about our own piety.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"A disobedience that bequeaths humiliation and extreme need is better than an obedience that bequeaths self-infatuation and pride." The minor stumbles (*lamam*) serve a profound spiritual purpose: they break the ego and remind the soul of its desperate need for God's vast forgiveness. Claiming absolute purity feeds the diseases of the heart, whereas true righteousness (*Taqwa*) is a secret state known only to God.

أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ • وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًۭا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ... أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌۭ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ • وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ • وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ • ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ • وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
"Have you seen the one who turned away ˹from Islam,˺ and ˹initially˺ paid a little ˹for his salvation˺, and then stopped?... ˹They state˺ that no soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another, and that each person will only have what they endeavoured towards, and that ˹the outcome of˺ their endeavours will be seen ˹in their record˺, then they will be fully rewarded, and that to your Lord ˹alone˺ is the ultimate return ˹of all things˺."
Plain UnderstandingGod addresses the absurdity of trying to buy one's way out of moral accountability. He establishes the universal, timeless law given to all Prophets (including Abraham and Moses): no one can carry your sins for you. You will only benefit from your own sincere efforts, every action will be exposed, and ultimately, every soul must stand alone before the Creator.
Historical Context (Al-Tabari / Ibn Kathir)This directly references a specific Makkan elite (often identified as Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah) who was inclined towards accepting the Prophet's message. However, an idolater friend rebuked him, offering to take on Walid's punishment in the Hereafter if Walid paid him a sum of money to remain a pagan. Walid paid a little, but his greed caused him to stop paying the rest. God reveals this to shatter the delusion that salvation can be outsourced or purchased.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)"To your Lord alone is the ultimate return." You cannot rely on your wealth, your lineage, or the spiritual works of others to save you. The soul must journey to God through its own sincere striving (*Sa'y*). If your endeavor is solely for the world, it will vanish; if your endeavor is for the Face of God, it will be eternally rewarded.

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ • وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا... وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
"Moreover, He is the One Who brings about joy and sadness. And He is the One Who gives life and causes death... And He is the One Who enriches and impoverishes. And He alone is the Lord of Sirius."
Plain UnderstandingA profound declaration of absolute divine sovereignty. God alone is the ultimate author of all human states—from the heights of laughter to the depths of tears, from life to death, and from wealth to poverty. He is even the Supreme Lord of Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, which the pagans mistakenly worshipped for fortune.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)The star Sirius (Ash-Shi'ra) was actively worshipped as a deity by certain Arab tribes, particularly the Banu Khuza'ah, who believed it controlled their destinies and brought wealth. God reclaims absolute authority, reminding them that the very star they pray to for riches is itself a subservient creation bowing to the true Lord.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)"He expanded you so as not to keep you in contraction, and contracted you so as not to keep you in expansion, and He took you out of both so that you do not belong to anything apart from Him." Joy and sadness are simply divine tools. When you realize that the One who makes you weep is the exact same One who makes you laugh, you stop fighting the decree and find deep peace in His presence.

هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ • أَزِفَتِ ٱلْءَازِفَةُ • لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ • أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ • وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ • وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ • فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩
"This ˹Prophet˺ is a warner like earlier ones. The approaching ˹Hour˺ has drawn near. None but Allah can disclose it. Do you find this revelation astonishing, laughing ˹at it˺ and not weeping ˹in awe˺, while persisting in heedlessness? Instead, prostrate to Allah and worship ˹Him alone˺!"
Plain UnderstandingThe Surah concludes with a stark, urgent reality check. The Day of Judgment is imminent, and no one can avert it but God. It condemns the arrogant mockery of those who laugh at the truth instead of weeping in reverence, commanding them to abandon their heedlessness, drop to the ground in prostration, and submit to their Creator.
Historical Context (Al-Bukhari)The impact of this final command was historically unprecedented. When the Prophet ﷺ publicly recited these verses for the first time in Makkah, the rhythmic power and terrifying majesty of the words completely overwhelmed the audience. As he fell into prostration at this final verse, every single person present—both the devout Muslims and the staunchest pagan chieftains—involuntarily fell to the ground and prostrated alongside him.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)The ultimate cure for the disease of spiritual heedlessness (Ghaflah) is the physical act of Sujud (prostration). By placing the highest, most dignified part of the human body—the forehead—into the lowest dust, the ego is momentarily shattered. True awe of the approaching reality leaves no room for arrogant laughter, only the tears of realization and absolute submission to the Beloved.
