Surah Ash-Sharh

The Relief • Makkah • 8 Verses
The Expansion of the Chest. Revealed immediately following Surah Ad-Duha, this deeply intimate Surah continues the divine therapy for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It maps the internal, physical sensations of anxiety—the crushing weight of burdens and the tightness of the chest—and provides the ultimate psychological framework for enduring hardship. It establishes the unbreakable promise that relief is inherently bound to the struggle itself, teaching the believer to seek rest not in idleness, but in joyful devotion.
Verse 1
أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
"Have We not uplifted your heart for you ˹O Prophet˺,"
Plain Understanding
God asks a comforting rhetorical question: Have I not opened, purified, and expanded your heart, filling it with light and removing its deep anxieties?
Historical Context (Al-Tabari)
This refers both to the physical opening of the Prophet's ﷺ chest by the angels during his childhood to purify his heart, and the continuous spiritual expansion of his capacity to receive the massive, heavy responsibility of divine revelation without being crushed by it.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Useful knowledge is that whose light rays spread in the chest and tear away the veil from the heart." True spiritual expansion occurs when the heart is emptied of the love of the Dunya and filled entirely with the tranquil light of divine certainty.

Verse 2
وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ
"relieved you of the burden"
Plain Understanding
And did I not lift the crushing, exhausting weight of sorrow and immense responsibility that was pressing down upon you?
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
"Take pity on your soul and be kind to it, and surrender whatever is besides your Lord to Him." The burdens that crush human beings are usually the burdens of self-direction and the illusion of control. The moment you surrender outcomes to the Creator, the agonizing weight evaporates.

Verse 3
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ
"which weighed so heavily on your back,"
Plain Understanding
A burden so profoundly heavy and difficult that it literally felt as though it was snapping your spine and breaking your spirit.
Historical Context (Al-Qurtubi)
The early days of the Makkan mission were characterized by intense physical persecution, the vicious slander of the Prophet's character, and the agonizing grief he felt for his people who were marching toward destruction. The psychological toll was intensely physical.

Verse 4
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ
"and elevated your renown for you?"
Plain Understanding
In exchange for enduring that heavy burden, God has eternally elevated your name, ensuring you are remembered and honored across the entire earth.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
Allah elevated the remembrance of the Prophet ﷺ such that his name is forever paired with God's name in the declaration of faith (Shahada) and the call to prayer (Adhan), recited continuously by millions of believers every single day.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
Do not allow your heart to take pleasure with the praises of people, nor be saddened by their condemnation. True elevation of status (Rif'ah) is granted exclusively by God in the unseen world. When you seek fame from creation, you are humiliated; when you seek obscurity for God's sake, He elevates your name among the angels.

Verse 5
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
"So, surely with hardship comes ease."
Plain Understanding
A universal, unbreakable divine law: deeply woven into the very fabric of every single hardship is the precise ease and relief required to survive it.
Historical Context (Ibn Kathir)
The linguistic structure of this verse in Arabic is profound. "Hardship" (Al-'Usr) is definite, meaning it is one specific, finite problem. "Ease" (Yusran) is indefinite, implying a vast, multiplied, and boundless relief. The Prophet ﷺ famously smiled and said, "One hardship can never overcome two eases."
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"A disobedience that bequeaths humiliation and extreme need is better than an obedience that bequeaths self-infatuation and pride." The hardship that breaks your ego and forces you to your knees in tears is actually an immense spiritual ease, as it instantly teleports you into the presence of the Divine.

Verse 6
إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًۭا
"Surely with ˹that˺ hardship comes ˹more˺ ease."
Plain Understanding
God repeats the promise immediately for emphasis, ensuring the anxious heart deeply internalizes that the relief is not just coming later, but is existing simultaneously with the pain right now.
Purification of the Self (Al-Jilani)
When you are trapped in the fire of a severe trial, do not panic and do not seek to escape it through illicit means. The fire is only there to burn away your impurities. Stay perfectly still in the decree of God, for the ease is already arriving.

Verse 7
فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ
"So once you have fulfilled ˹your duty˺, strive ˹in devotion˺,"
Plain Understanding
Therefore, when you are freed from your daily worldly obligations and heavy struggles, do not become idle; immediately stand up and pour your energy into deep, private worship.
Divine Wisdom (Ibn Ata'illah)
"Nothing benefits the heart more than a spiritual retreat wherein it enters the domain of meditation." The cure for the fatigue of the Dunya is not necessarily sleep, but the energizing labor of standing alone in the dark, speaking to the One who controls the dawn.

Verse 8
وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب
"turning to your Lord ˹alone˺ with hope."
Plain Understanding
Focus the entirety of your heart's desires, hopes, and deepest longings exclusively toward your Creator, seeking nothing from anyone else.
Purification of the Self (Al-Ghazali)
"In God, there is no sorrow or suffering or affliction. If you want to be free of all affliction and suffering, hold fast to God, and turn wholly to Him, and to no one else." All human suffering fundamentally stems from directing our longing toward temporary, fragile created things that are destined to break. True peace is found when the vector of your longing points only to the Eternal.
